I stayed here for a long weekend, and although the room was spacious and had a private entryway, everything seemed a bit tired and worn.
The good: The location in the historic district couldn't be better. The breakfast (which was included with the room package) was quite good, and the server, Catfish, was very attentive.
The bad: The biggest sin this hotel commits is providing low-quality, soft mattresses. They are very uncomfortable, and the bed linens are cheap and scratchy. I would say that the mattresses and bed linens are sub-par for Renaissance standards. The room itself was clean but seemed a tad spartan.
The rest of the hotel seemed understaffed. Frequently, I had to wait for a doorman/bellhop to appear in order to get a cab. The bar and lounge area staff always seemed harried and rushed. The lounge and bar area could use a good scrubbing, and the bar staff could be better about wiping up after patrons. There are not nearly enough outlets in the lobby to plug in your laptop. I realize that Charleston is a bourbon town, but the selection of wines by the glass were pretty horrible and overpriced.
Upon checking out, the front desk staff seemed very confused about how to remove the charges for breakfast from my bill, and at one point, the hotel manager inelegantly demanded that we produce coupons for this breakfast. (Coupons?!?) Thankfully, another front desk staff member stepped in to remedy this situation (she probably should have been the manager, as her customer service skills were superior), but, again, it took too long to solve a non-problem.
As far as Renaissances go, I would rank this one towards the bottom. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of choice in Charleston, which is why I suspect that Marriott has looked the other way in letting this hotel fester.
