“Location”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

This hotel is all about location being in the center of historic Charleston, South Carolina. Thus, we could walk everywhere and did not need to use our car once during our three day visit. While our room was adequate in terms of size and cleanliness, the rest of the hotel appeared old and outdated. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We received restaurant recommendations from the concierge that turned out to be "right on" for what we were looking for. Our "free" breakfast served in the hotel was adequate for our needs. The restaurant staff was extremely friendly and attentive each morning. We did have drinks one evening at the bar and the bartender was friendly. This hotel is very pricey due to its location. However, the hotel's amenities and overall condition were not reflective of the cost to stay here.

The Renaissance Charleston Hotel is located in the heart of the historic district of Charleston, SC. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, the staff at this hotel is amazing and effective. Yolanda at the front desk seemed genuinely happy to see me and performed her function flawlessly. Additionally, every staff member who crossed my path was friendly and very helpful with no hint of pretense.
The rooms were very clean and well maintained. The restaurant and bar staff were a pleasure to be around as well.
I highly recommend this hotel to anyone in the area of Charleston, SC. I will definitely make this my go-to hotel whenever I am in the area.

I stayed here for a long weekend, and although the room was spacious and had a private entryway, everything seemed a bit tired and worn.

The good: The location in the historic district couldn't be better. The breakfast (which was included with the room package) was quite good, and the server, Catfish, was very attentive.

The bad: The biggest sin this hotel commits is providing low-quality, soft mattresses. They are very uncomfortable, and the bed linens are cheap and scratchy. I would say that the mattresses and bed linens are sub-par for Renaissance standards. The room itself was clean but seemed a tad spartan.

The rest of the hotel seemed understaffed. Frequently, I had to wait for a doorman/bellhop to appear in order to get a cab. The bar and lounge area staff always seemed harried and rushed. The lounge and bar area could use a good scrubbing, and the bar staff could be better about wiping up after patrons. There are not nearly enough outlets in the lobby to plug in your laptop. I realize that Charleston is a bourbon town, but the selection of wines by the glass were pretty horrible and overpriced.

Upon checking out, the front desk staff seemed very confused about how to remove the charges for breakfast from my bill, and at one point, the hotel manager inelegantly demanded that we produce coupons for this breakfast. (Coupons?!?) Thankfully, another front desk staff member stepped in to remedy this situation (she probably should have been the manager, as her customer service skills were superior), but, again, it took too long to solve a non-problem.

As far as Renaissances go, I would rank this one towards the bottom. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of choice in Charleston, which is why I suspect that Marriott has looked the other way in letting this hotel fester.

I have now stayed here on 5 visits. The location is perfect, no need for a car at all. Always felt safe there and any need I had was met with no concerns. The breakfast is excellent and I like that the staff is pretty much always the same. I even had one of the kitchen staff come out to meet me once on a return visit, they had bought almond milk for me at my request and made my shakes for me each morning. The rooms are a very nice size as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor. Even though its tucked away (you will drive by it), on garbage day you will...

Comfy, welcoming hotel with great service. Marriott Gold members get free continental breakfast. Easy walk to King St shopping, Market St, and great Bay St restaurants and bars. Will be back again and again!

Spent 2 nights at the hotel and was satisfied with everything. Excellent location within walking distance of all of Charleston downtown sites. Parking across the street for $12 if you're not a valet parker type of person. Bar a bit small but not too crowded. Would stay there again.

My wife and I stayed here for the convenience. This hotel was in the perfect location between King and Meeting Street. Everything in the Historic District was easily accessible. The staff was super friendly and helped us plan trips. We self-parked across the street and were able to go in and out.

The hotel is a short drive away from Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, and Isle of Palms. We took day trips there from the hotel. The hotel is also a short drive from the airport.

The rooms were clean and well kept.

We would recommend this hotel to friends and family.
