I have to say that for any vacation in Charleston, it is hard to find a more centrally located hotel than Charleston Place. We spent 2 nights there in late October 2012 in a so-called junior suite. Unfortunately we got the "dungeon" room which was so dark that we actually needed to use a flashlight to look into our suitcase....and this was at noon on a sunny day! The room we were in had two windows, both of which were completely covered with foliage that blocked all the light. This was probably the only room like this, so if you are part vampire and can't deal with light, I would recommend room 202.
The place is very impressive looking and it had some nice touches, but for the relatively expensive price we paid, a few more amenities would be nice. There was no refrigerator, no microwave, and no coffee maker. They did have a place to buy coffee in the lobby. The room had two TVs but I am not sure why since both are in the same room (the remote did not work on one of them.) The staff was very friendly.
The wireless internet access was so slow, it was painful...about the speed of a modem. After struggling with this for a while, I tried connecting with the wired connection. This was over 100 times faster as measured by speedtest.net I commented on this to the staff when I asked for a longer LAN cable, but nobody took the initiative to solve this issue, they just sent a slightly longer cable to my room.
For an impressive, romantic place to stay, this is a very nice hotel and is in an ideal location. For more practical purposes, some place like Candlewood Suites is a much better choice, especially if you do not have the big bucks required to stay at Charleston Place.
