“Great Location and Excellent Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2014

We spent 2 nights at the Mills House in Charleston. We would definitely stay there again. Several great restaurants are close by and the Market and waterfront are about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The room was small, which we expected based on reading other reviews before we booked, but was very clean and comfortable. With so many suggestions for dining from friends and family, we didn’t eat at the hotel, but the breakfast buffet looked and smelled very enticing as we headed through the lobby one morning. I would have given the Mills House 5 stars if it weren’t for the bathroom. The sink had a narrow rim which prevented us from storing toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving kit, brushes, etc. Also, after seeing the rest of the room and the hotel overall, I was taken aback by the appearance and condition of the tub and its grout.

Thank you for visiting us and we are ecstatic about the experience you received while here in the Holy City! Because of the property's historical presence, some of our bathrooms are more narrow in size than our more modern counterparts. Again, we greatly appreciate you choosing to visit us and hope that you will return very soon.

My husband and I stayed at the Mills House in Charleston over Easter weekend. Because the weather was overcast with heavy misting from time to time, we tried to do inside things and save our walking around for when the weather is better. Since we live in upstate SC we can get back to the lovely city almost whenever we want to make a 4 hour drive.
Because the Mills House has no porte-cochere or drive, one has to just stop on the street for the valets to take away the car and the porters to get the luggage. Both tasks were accomplished very swiftly and in a friendly manner. Previous posters are correct in that there is a city garage connected to the hotel where one may self park. (It may be where the valets take our cars).
The inside of the hotel is so very nice. We understand there was a fairly recent renovation and everything is beautiful. Although it was a total waste of money because of the weather, we had reserved one of the rooms with a balcony overlooking Queen Street. I can see it would be a good choice when not raining or too hot and humid. Our one problem occurred the following morning when the toilet stopped up and overflowed. We called the front desk who promised to send and engineer to fix the problem and housekeeping to actually mop the floor while we were out for the day. Before we left, housekeeping came in and plunged the toilet and worked on the floor. Truly I think that’s all that was ever done to fix the problem as it seemed to limp along through the evening and the next morning it happened yet again. I mentioned it on the way out to the front desk but have no way to know if it was ever fixed. YUK!! The beds were comfortable and we had a good rest both nights. My husband commented that the carpet on the floors looked so clean -- maybe because of the recent renovation, maybe because they do a good job in that area.
We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant the first evening and it was okay, hotel food, nothing really good or bad. The waiter was very nice but service was incredibly slow considering there were only maybe 2 or 3 tables occupied. Breakfast had better service and the food, once again, was very acceptable. Someone mentioned it was overpriced and perhaps it was – but with some of the prices we have paid in other cities it seemed reasonable.
We had a lunch and dinner across the street at Husk and Poogan’s Porch and both were very good meals. Try to get reservations at one or both if you are staying at the Mills House -- they are located practically in your back yard.
Because everyone was so friendly and the hotel so nice and in a great location, we will definitely return when next in the Charleston area. Something like an overflowing toilet was probably just one of those things – even though the problem was not rectified.

Room Tip: The rooms on the side facing Queen Street (with a balcony) are nice. Although I didn't see them...

I attended a wedding in the courtyard of this hotel and also stayed 3 nights here. Lovely setting. Centrally located. The hotel rooms were clean and comfy. Bathrooms were very small even in the suites. The breakfast buffet was very tasty. Overall, a nice hotel with a helpful staff. I would stay here again.

This is an excellent hotel. Stayed last week on a two-day trip to Charleston for romantic get-away. We arrived after the concierge left but one of the valets, Stewart, provided us with several excellent, detailed recommendations for restaurants and nightlife (which perfectly fit our personality). He truly made our trip to Charleston! Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
