We first stayed in this hotel over 10 years ago and we loved it then. However, it has been well and truly updated/renovated and we fell in love all over again. It is in a wonderful location with easy access to restaurants, trolley stops, city market and shops. Our room was wonderful, the bed was very comfortable and the staff bed over backwards to make your stay enjoyable. My husband and I are very fond of the outdoor patio/bar area with the fountain in the middle (very Southern) and a great place to relax either before heading out to eat or on returning to the hotel after a day seeing the sights of Charleston. Would heartily recommend this hotel to anyone and would love to come and stay again.

Lovely hotel on the outside - beautiful courtyard. Very convenient location. Did NOT like the decor - too modern! Why destroy the historic ambiance of a beautiful old hotel with gaudy modern furnishings! I was hoping we would have had a beautiful poster bed to sleep in (reprod.) would be fine, but in keeping with the historic nature of the whole area. That's why we came to Charleston! Also, a small refrigerator in the room would be very helpful. I had meds that needed refrigerated, so it was a pain to keep filling up the ice chest to keep it cool. Also, a hook in the bathroom to hang my robe on. I just had to put it on the floor - not enough towel racks.
This was our 45th anniversary trip, so it was very nice to find a bottle of wine in an ice bucket on our bed, along with nuts and cookies. Even though we don't drink wine or champagne ( or any alcohol), it was a nice gesture. Maybe, a fruit basket would have been more appropriate for us. We now don't know what to do with the chardoney (wine?), but it was very thoughtful. All in all, we had a nice trip. Bed was comfortable. Hotel was close to some great restaurants - ejoyed eating at 82 Queen, just outside the door. Went to "Circa 1886 " for our anniversary dinner at The Wentworth Mansion, then toured the mansion and climbed up to the cupula and we could see the whole city. Wonderful experience. Loved the carriage ride, too. We had a nice time - just didn't like the modern decor of the historic hotel . Why are decorators so tacky this day and time?? I like the antiques or at least reproductions. And the refrigerator in the room - there's room to add one, and a microwave would be nice. We spent a bundle on food. That would be a great saving.
