“Its all about Kevin!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 February 2014

We recently spent 2 days in Charleston, staying at the Courtyard. The hotel room was fine (wish you could open the window) but the REAL gem is the concierge service. Kevin is absolutely fantastic and truly knows the city (where to eat, what to see). After setting us up with dinner reservations he offered to meet us later (after his hours) to take us on a night walking tour of "secret gardens" in the historic district. This was all on his time and he spent a good 2 hours showing us wonderful sights that we would never have seen otherwise. Thank you so much Kevin for making this a special trip!

Dear VashonIslandDan,

Thank you for your feedback and for staying with us on your recent trip from Washington.

I would agree that our concierge services are one of a kind and it seems that Kevin really blew you away with his passion for Charleston. He really does know the "secret" spots around town to go see and definitely can get you setup with the finest cuisine Charleston has to offer. We hope you will let Kevin plan your next trip to Charleston and that you will come see us again soon.

Sincerely,

We just returned from a weekend visit in Charleston and chose the Courtyard Marriott as it offered a great location in the historic district. We thoroughly enjoyed Charleston but we will not be returning to the Courtyard Marriot for our next visit in April. It all comes down to cleanliness for me and for a whopping $350 dollars a night, it better be spotless and sadly this Marriott was a disappointment. Upon entering you are overwhelmed with a strong perfume smell. They must have it running through the vents as an air freshener as upon reaching our room on floor 2, we realized why. The hotel has a mildew smell that permeates through the entire building. Our first room was so foul smelling that we immediately asked to move. I have to say the front desk was lovely and they were very apologetic and moved us to another room immediately. By the attendant's reaction I am thinking they deal with this often. Our second room had a faint scent, nothing we couldn't deal with. The room was a nice size but in dire need of some new carpet! The carpets were littered with stains (as was the previous room) and it was obvious that the cleaning crew did not do a thorough job with the vacuum and they even left a dirty rag on the bathroom counter. Gross! We let that go and went on with enjoying our trip as we hardly spent anytime in the hotel. The hotel is showing its age as walking through the hotel , most of the carpeting is stained and a majority of the room doors and floor walls are in need of a cleaning and re-fresher on the paint. The hallways and the room doors were really all nicked up. Very disappointed in the amount of $$ spent to sleep there but that is Charleston in the historic district-expensive! Charleston was a great city to visit and can't wait to go back...just choosing another place to sleep! I do have to commend the front desk on being so pleasant, the concierge who was incredible and the lovely bellhop, Mr. Meril!

Dear 3sojourners,

Thank you for your feedback and for being a Senior Contributor on TripAdvisor.

I want to first apologize for not meeting your-or our own-expectations. I completely agree that when paying top dollar for a hotel room that the room should be immaculate. The room should also smell fresh upon entering and be free of any nicks in the door. I can assure you that we will address these issues immediately with our housekeeping and engineering teams so that they do not occur again.

I am glad you were able to enjoy the service offered by our Front Desk, our concierge Kevin, and our bellman Meril. We will address the physical issues you encountered, so that their service is not overshadowed next time.

I understand that you are returning in April and I would like the opportunity to show you both the room and service experience we do offer at our hotel. If you could please contact me directly at grant.hoskins@interstatehotels.com or 843-805-7900, I would love the opportunity to set you up for your next trip. I look forward to hearing from you and apologize again about the experience you had during your stay.

Great place to stay in Charleston. I don't know why you would stay at a more expensive place. The stay is enhanced by the advice of their outstanding concierge, Kevin. He made reservations for dinner, gave us written directions to get there and recommended entrees. Also recommended a fun, informative walking tour of the historic district.

Dear Mgene109,

Thank you for your feedback and for staying with us on your trip down from North Carolina.

Kevin's in depth knowledge of the Charleston restaurants goes deep enough where he can recommend the best entrees, appetizers, and desserts off of any menu. It sounds like he was able to do this for you all and get you setup with a great walking tour as well.

We are glad you had a great weekend and hope to see you back in Charleston again soon.

I truly enjoyed staying here last year. The staff was professional and the accommodations were lovely. I would pick up breakfast to go in their lobby every morning. The concierge office provided me with great walking trip options. This hotel is situated in a perfect location at Meeting and Calhoun. You are within walking distance of some of the greatest sites, restaurants and shops. Enjoy your stay!!

Dear PebblesCalifornia,

Thank you for your feedback and for being a Top Contributor on TripAdvisor.

Location is extremely important when booking a hotel in downtown Charleston and I couldn't agree more that ours is in one of the more perfect locations. Our guests love being within walking distance of some of the best restaurants, shopping, and historical sites that the city has to offer.

We are glad you truly enjoyed your stay with us and hope this experience will bring you back to our hotel sometime soon!

I like the Courtyard brand quite a lot, this location isn't quite up to snuff. The building is older and the rooms in need of updating, things are a bit worn and frayed. Our room on the top floor was very noisy from the HVAC system so we had a constant rumble that was quite annoying. Housekeeping was fine, front desk staff and bell staff very friendly and pleasant.
The hotel is justifiably proud of their concierges who are extremely knowledgable and helpful. We worked with Elizabeth who was charming and very patient. She set us up with a good walking tour and a lively but very disappointing restaurant our first night (39 Rue de Jean). She also gave us an excellent overview of Charleston's history and attractions.
With a renovation of the rooms and attention to the mechanical issues, this would be a great place due to location, customer service and convenience but until that happens be aware of the shortcomings of the property.

Room Tip: Request a room looking toward the historic area, the other side faces parking lots. Avoid the top fl...

Dear bostonmarc,

Thank you for your feedback and for being a Top Contributor on TripAdvisor.

I am sorry that you were unable to get a good night's sleep while staying with us here in Charleston. We will have our Engineering team address the issue with our 6th floor HVAC unit immediately, so that this issue does not occur again. Our hotel did go under a full renovation just two and a half years ago, but we will continue to look for ways to update all of our guest amenities.

Thank you for your kind words about Elizabeth, our bellman, and our front desk staff. We will address the mechanical issues so that they do not overshadow the great customer service offered by our staff. We hope you will join us in Charleston again soon, so that we may offer you an experience that meets and exceeds your expectations. Thank you for your business.

We wanted to stay in Charleston near the historic district. This hotel is close to the historic district - short walk. The staff is wonderful - everyone was very friendly. Rooms were tastefully decorated and very comfortable. The concierge service was very helpful with recommendations for restaurants and things to do. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We faced on to the street but did not hear any noise coming in from the outside.

A really good hotel, central historic district. The rooms in the new addition are excellent. On property parking. Bell service, ask for Thad. Small dining room for limited breakfast and dinner, but plenty of restaurants are just around the corner. Close to Ft Sumter on shore site and boat to the island. The best feature is the properties' concierge, Kevin McQuade. Kevin outlined a great day in Charleston to include reservations with Tommy Dew a great local walking guide. So see the concierge for some great hints on a super town

Thank you for your feedback and for being a Senior Contributor on TripAdvisor.

It is great to hear that you enjoyed one of our rooms in the new wing of our hotel. Our entire hotel was fortunate enough to have undergone a full renovation about two and a half years ago. I am glad you also were able to experience the bell service offered by Thad, who does an incredible job of greeting all of our customers upon arrival as well.

We hope you stay with us on your next trip to the Historic District of Charleston, SC and thank you for your business!
