“Nice hotel, great full breakfast”
Reviewed 7 July 2012

We stayed here for one night during a cross-country motorcycle trip. The front desk staff was very friendly and willing to allow us to park the motorcycles underneath the canopy at the main entrance in case it rained overnight. Prior to arriving we had called about this option but they were not willing to commit; the desk clerk at the time we checked in was extremely accommodating and readily allowed us to do this.

The rooms are basic - the bed was very comfortable but the furniture was definitely used. The morning full breakfast was complete with cold, hot (eggs, waffles, etc.) and had good hours until 10am. The pool was nice and used by many guests. Overall the cost of the hotel is reasonable - we paid $129 for what they consider a king bed study room - with the breakfast option it was worth the cost.

There are only a couple of restaurant options within walking distance - one is a Japanese restaurant which we opted for and found to be very good and reasonably priced.

After check-in, we were quite surprised to find a hand-written, personalized note on the desk in the living area of our suite. What a nice touch, especially considering we were staying only one night.

Other nice, unexpected touches: coffee/tea/fresh fruit station just outside the elevator on our floor; little extras (mouthwash, shower cap, cotton swabs) among the toiletries; microwave popcorn alongside the coffee/tea/sundries on the kitchenette counter; poolside towels, in our case hand-delivered by an friendly attendant.

Breakfast buffet (on a Monday morning) offered a wide variety of items, from western omelettes and home-fries to make-your-own waffles to the usual continental items. They even had fresh Krispy Kremes! Area was well-stocked, even considering the hotel was home to a large group of teenagers that week.

Rooms and common areas were clean. Beds were comfy. Bathroom was spacious. All-in-all, a great value and good location. We will be back!

I agree with Lynn M. below. If you can't afford to stay in the Historic District, this is a short distance away and is clean and comfortable. Right off of a "strip" with lots of restaurants, etc. Downtown drive took 15-20 mins.

Great and helpful front desk staff. Helped us find where to go, recommended parking areas, and let us plug in our Volt!

I have never stayed at a Hampton I didn't like. Beds are very comfortable with big soft pillows and comfy comforters. Staff is courteous and friendly. Room and bath are clean. Air conditioning works well and is not too noisy. Nice flat screen tv with HBO. Free wireless Internet always appreciated. Reasonable rates. Not too far from historic district or beach, though definitely not as convenient as staying closer in. Breakfast nothing to write home about, but better than some other chains.

A friend and I recently stayed here as part of a girls’ weekend. We didn’t want to pay the prices they were asking for accomodations in downtown Charleston, so elected to stay here.

We had a bit of a snafu at check-in. We had been pre-assigned to a room on the third floor, but when we checked in and I requested a room close to the elevator, they moved us to a different room, still on the third floor. We went up to our room, dropped our luggage, and drove next door to the grocery store to pick up supplies for the room. When we returned about 30 minutes later, all of our luggage was gone. As we were waiting for the elevator to arrive so that we could go downstairs to inquire as to what was going on, a man pushing a baggage cart walked up, and I took a chance and asked if he knew what had happened to the luggage in room 303. He beamed and said that yes, he had moved it to room 327, as requested, and I asked “WHY?” He quickly replied that he would move it back, as I returned to the room to call the front desk and inquire what as going on. The clerk told me that housekeeping was “only supposed to remove the rollaway” that was in room 303. I told her three times there was no rollaway in room 303, there had never BEEN a rollaway in room 303, but she wasn’t listening. At least we had our luggage back, and congratulated ourselves that our ‘excitement’ for the trip was over.

Unfortunately, the air conditioner in the main room was making such a horrendous noise, that we knew nobody would be able to sleep on the hideabed couch in that room. I can’t believe nobody had complained before us – it was literally so loud that we couldn’t carry on a normal conversation. We told the desk clerk on our way out to our dinner reservations about the problem.

Downtown Charleston is a good 20-30 minute drive, depending on traffic. Luckily we had given ourselves plenty of time to arrive at Hank’s Seafood Restaurant (see my review) for our 6:30 reservation.

We were very pleasantly surprised upon our return to the hotel to find out that they had entirely replaced the air conditioning unit in the family room, and it was blessedly quiet. My friend spent 3 nights on the pull-out couch, while I had the king bed in the main bedroom. We had a large number of tv channels from which to choose. My bed was extremely comfortable, with a large number of pillows from which to choose. There was plenty of room on the vanity, as well.

Breakfast was fine Saturday and Sunday, although seating was difficult to come by. Saturday morning they opened the extra room that they usually use for the managers receptions (which only occur Mon-Thurs) but on Sunday I had to ask for someone to open that room, so that we could find a place to sit. I thought the breakfast offerings were quite generous, in spite of some complaining that they weren’t ‘fresh’ enough. Each morning there were choices of eggs, breakfast meat, cereal, muffins, English muffins, toast, bagels, fresh fruit, several kinds of juice, yogurt, pastries, coffee, oatmeal, and yes, Krispy Kreme donuts.

I do agree with a previous reviewer who commented on the lack of any amenities when it came to the kitchenette in the room. I’ve stayed at many other suite hotels that at least offered plates, silverware, or glasses, but this room had nothing. Not even a paper towel or rag with which to wipe up spills. The mini-frig was adequate for our needs.

The hotel had cookies on Friday when we checked in, but that was the only time we saw them. They sometimes had pitchers of ice water available but most of the time as we ventured back and forth over the weekend, the space for them was empty. Parking was adequate, and there’s a nice grocery store close by.

Overall, I think we received a good value for what we paid. We had originally planned our visit for March, but were appalled at the prices that the Hampton (and everyone else) was asking, so put off our visit until the first weekend in May. This hotel is a decent alternative to staying in downtown Charleston, and is an easy 15-30 minute trip into downtown.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room near the elevator - your 'view' will be a physical plant

Stayed both coming north and returning south on a recent visit to NC from Tampa. For our trip and needs, this Hampton is very well located and is clean and nice, Friendly staff, looks new, close to many food options. Just down the street from some good restaurants and a resonable drive to the historic district.

The traffic into the city an back was very congested in the city on one leg of our trip due to a festival, but was easily dodged by driving side streets. If you want to walk Charleston, this is not the spot. If you are moving about by car, this is not a bad base camp.

Typical Hampton: typical breakfast menu and typical amenities here, but this is in the top 30% of the Hampton world in terms of appearance and attention to cleanliness.

Sorry we missed the Managers reception. This reception was not expected at all, and is not very common at the Hamptons we have used.

Overall, this is a good place to stay over in Chareston for short visits, and above average for a Hampton.
