“Clean...with a musty odor...but overall OK.”

My husband and I stayed at the Hampton Inn, Charleston - Historic District from 5/13 - 5/16. Our room which was located on the 3rd. floor had a terrible musty odor. We tried using the air conditioner in the hopes that it would help - it did not. After complaining, our room was swiitched to a room on the first floor which still had an odor, but not half as bad. Luckily there was one room left and we were able to change. The location of the hotel was good and within walking distance to just about anywhere downtown. Paulo's Gelato right up on John St...excellent and next door to a french bakery with the most fabulous breakfast pastries and macaroons. A few steps up to King St. is a Cupcake store with great desserts. Try the Mint Chocolate Chip cupcake if you get a chance. The hotel had a very nice continental breakfast every day. The room was clean, the staff very friendly and accomodating.

My husband and I spend a pleasant few days at this Hotel. The rooms were very comfortable. Charleston is a small walkable town. Most of the sites in this city were within a 30 minute walk from the hotel. There is a visitor/ transportation center across the street . You can also purchase an unlimited bus pass for about $5.00 per day or $11.00 for three days. The staff was helpful. There is a free breakfast buffet. Parking was $12.00 per day with in and out privileges. The hotel is great for group travel; there is a sunny courtyard and a lovely pool.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here to celebrate her birthday. The room was very nice and clean, particularly the bathroom. I think it was around $130/night (including tax) when I booked it through priceline. The location is excellent, it is a very short walk to great restaurants (The restaurant Basil is a must if you visit Charleston). It was probably a 15-20 minute walk to the marketplace. The breakfast was above average. One negative is the parking situation, $12 dollars to park in the garage attached to the hotel, which is not that bad, but still.

I would not recommend going to the restaurant Rue De Jean, which is about a 2 minute walk from the restaurant. This restaurant gets rave reviews, but our experience was terrible. The waiter we had may have been the worst I have ever had, took him 20 minutes (at least) to get our drink orders, 30 minutes to get our drinks back to us (after we called him over twice to remind him), and so on... another waiter ended up doing the other guys job most of the time. This was after our waiter disappeared for about 30 minutes without taking our order. When he returned, he asked with a lousy attitude, "Okay, what do you want?" I ended up only tipping 10%, which I don't think I have ever done before, we always tip at minimum 20% for even mediocre service. We ordered a cheese plate for an appetizer, which was nothing special. My entrée was quite good, hers was just descent. Anyways, we went back to our hotel a few hours after leaving the restaurant and all of a sudden her stomach started killing her, to the point that I ended up taking her to the emergency room (I didn't feel that great myself either). The only reason I post this about Rue De Jean is that it will be recommended to you by everyone if you stay at this hotel because of its proximity. There are just much better fine dining restaurants in Charleston.

I stayed here for 5 days and 4 nights and was very pleased with the Hampton Inn. The lobby is large and welcoming with multiple areas for relaxing, eating, using WI-Fi or having breakfast. Tea, coffee, water and fruit is available all day which is a nice touch. The desk staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. The breakfast buffet is free for guests but not great. The eggs are made from powder, the cooked food was often cold and not replenished enough to accommodate the large number of people who arrive for breakfast. I learned quickly to enjoy either yogurt or oatmeal on the outside terrace and get out of there as fast as possible. There are many alternatives for breakfast in the historic district and brunch at High Cotton was one of the best meals I enjoyed in Charleston.
Rooms at the Hampton Inn are comfortable with large bathrooms. My room overlooked the court yard and was quiet and clean. Only complaint with the room was that the windows are sealed shut. It would have been nice to open the window for fresh air and cool breezes. Location is outstanding, directly across the street from the Visitor's Center which was perfect for catching the trolleys and tours. Later in the evening the trolleys stop running, cab fares are very affordable but a cab must be called in advance from a restaurant or hotel.
Overall I would stay at the Hampton Inn and highly recommend.

To do in Charleston: Magnolia's Restaurant for dinner and Hyman's Seafood Company for lunch should not be missed. A day at Magnolia Plantation was interesting and a nice break from the bustle of the city. You can arrange a chaperoned driving tour of Charleston and a trip to Magnolia Plantation in the visitor's center for under $60 for the day. If you are lucky enough to be in Charleston during the Historic Homes and Gardens tours, it is a MUST. Absolutely avoid the night Ghost & Graveyard Tour run by Bulldog tours, definitely not worth the time and money, terrible and boring!

Directly across from the Visitor's Center for bus tours, informational movie and brochures. Wonderful dining next door and within 1 and 2 blocks. Large breakfast buffet with 2 attendants, ample seating, large choice of foods, outdoor eating area if weather is nice. A microwave to warm the danish and cinnamon rolls would have a nice touch. Waffles, sausage or ham, scrambled eggs, bagels, toast, delicious cut fresh fruit (pineapple, mango and papaya to which we added bananas), muffins, yogurts, cereals, juice, etc. Coffee and iced water always in the lobby after touring. Large clean rooms with attention to details (i.e., washclothes and handtowels were neatly folded in a different manner each of the 3 days there). Friendly desk staff, a bellman Henry that is the old South personified! Walk everywhere from this location. Parking garage @$12/day directly behind the building - pulled car into entrance area for unloading/loading. Slow internet connection for our laptop. Finally gave up a couple of times - a disappointment since I keep up with my work from the laptop while traveling. The tap water is HOT, so be careful. Coffee pot makes just one cup at a time. No fridge, microwave, or little table in room but 2 nice areas to open up suitcases. Nice bedding. Would definitely recommend or stay there again. Excellent location.

We travel quite a bit, both for business and pleasure. We were very happy with the friendliness and efficiency of the staff, the size and appearance of our room, a very comfortable bed, beautifully decorated lobby, with ice water and cookies out at least one evening. Very good breakfast, with plenty of variety over our three day stay. Agree with one reviewer that the disposable cups, plates and utensils was disappointing -- but that was the only change we would make. Also liked its convenient location -- walking distance to most attractions and two very good restaurants right next door. Definitely plan to return.

We arrived early and didn't expect it but were pleased when the staff immediately checked us in and urged us to have breakfast. Within an hour of arriving, being checked in early, getting our car parked & bags to the room, the helpful staff had scheduled a tour for us. While it's a little further from the district than some, the Visitor Center's proximity (across the street) makes it a perfect location. Any of the 3 DASH trolley routes can be accessed from anywhere in the touristy areas and all will bring you back to the center - and therefore, the hotel. We loved it. It was clean, quiet, accommodating and very convenient. Yes, the breakfast is the standard fare - but the best standard fare and plentiful. We were readily offered advice for any type of food or meal that we were interested in and they even had a book of restaurants' menus available. We will definitely suggest this hotel to our friends.
