“Happy with the Hampton”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2007

After searching online for a decent, affordable hotel with little complaints from online comments we ended up staying at the Hampton. It was very nice. We were cordially greeted by Bryan at the front desk and he offered many suggestions for getting around town. We also upgraged our room at no extra cost. The room was clean and comfortable. When we requested additional towels, soap etc.. we received them quickly. The one problem we had, although not a deterrent from us staying here again, was that our bathroom ceiling dripped when the occupants in the room above showered. We let the staff know this and they sent someone in who just wiped the ceiling. They said they would not rent the other room until it was fixed but they did and it kept dripping, not alot but just enough to notice. We were offered another room but did not want to change with 2 kids and luggage. The hotel staff only offered that and at check-out said nothing about the leak. The pool was nice, although not well-stocked with towels. Breakfast and breakfast staff were excellent! It was kept out past 10:00 am for late comers. Beds were comfortable although didn't feel like queen beds as promised. Fresh baked cookies in the afternonn were a welcome treat, as well as, a well stocked tea and coffee table 24 hours a day!
All in all an excellent place to stay! Very close to everything yet not right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. Will stay there again and at other Hamptons in the future.

This hotel was in a great location with a trolly (bus) stop next door at the Visitors Center. It was in walking distance to everything but if you got tired you could take the trolly. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great too.

This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at!! The second I checked into this hotel, I could really notice how beautiful it really was. They had really pretty hardwood floors, and a beautiful fireplace with tables and chairs every where! The check in people were very nice and helpful. The parking deck was nice, and easy to get to. Now, I'm not big on elevators, but, the one in the parking deck was nice and fast. The ones inside are nice, too. When we got into our room, we had a view of the historic downtown, and of the hotel pool. The bed was very comfy. There was a nice TV, and really nice furniture. The bathrooms were very new looking and nice. The next morning we went to their breakfast buffet, it truly was the best hotel buffet I had ever seen and eaten! They had fried eggs, scrambled eggs, biscuits, muffins, bagels, fresh fruit, sausage, english muffins, biscuit gravy, and cereal! To drink there was apple juice, orange juice, 2% milk, and soy milk, also cranberry juice! The best part...it was free!!! The bathrooms were very nice and clean! The pool was nice, too! I strongly recommend this hotel to anyone! Please stay here!

We traveled to Charleston to see the tall ships and booked a room for an overnight stay. The room was almost $250 per night. We checked in early, and asked for a room on the front. When we came back later to get the key, we found we had been given a handicapped room facing the side. So much for being a Hilton Honors member. The room looked nice at first, but a closer look revealed the carpet was badly stained. The sofa was saggy and uncomfortable. Worst of all was the noise the a/c motor made. We can best describe it as similar to the noise of the African Queen. We were awake all night. Lastly, after taking a shower, brown water dripped from pipe all over the back of the toilet. The final insult? When we wrote to the Hampton Inn and told them of our experience, we were politely told the next time they would have someone escort us to the room and do a walk through. What makes them think there will be a next time! As frequent travelers who almost exclusively stay at Hampton Inns and have never complained, their customer service stunk.

This was a VERY clean hotel in the historic district. Great prices compared to other hotels in the area. The continental breakfast is amazing for this day and age! Fresh coffee available in the lobby 24 hours a day. Pool, fitness center, two computers available for guests, wireless, close to the water and all the shops in downtown. Parking is a bit of a hassel at $12/day cash or $15/day billed to your hotel account. When we come back to Charleston, I would definately stay here again and would recommend it to anyone trying to avoid spending a ton of money to visit Charleston.

If you are a loyal hilton traveler and want to stay in Charleston's historic district, the Hampton is your best bet. It is not the nicest Hilton brand hotel I've stayed in, but the room is comfortable, the hallways are bright and clean, and the front desk staff is helpful. It is 1,000 times more clean and comfortable than the Historic District Embassy Suites (across the street) and much more affordable than the Double Tree (which, frankly, has no nicer of a room).

Parking is a bit of a pain (garage only). If you park in the garage, be sure to exit on the side away from the Embassy Suites- otherwise you will have to walk all the way around the block to enter the hotel.

No room service available, but several great restaurants in walking distance. On a really hot day you will probably want to drive to the market area as this hotel is approximately 15- 20 blocks away. On a nice day it's a pleasant walk.

  • Liked — comfortable bed, hilton brand
  • Disliked — distance from market, parking

This Hampton is attractive enough, and in a great location at the periphery of Charleston's historic district. Just about anything you'd want to see and do in that area is within a 20 minute walk, and bicycle rickshaws are ubiquitous and readily available. The hotel staff was consistently friendly, helpful, and courteous...as was pretty much everyone we encountered in Charleston (these are some very polite and friendly folks). The hotel was very clean and the bed was quite comfortable, but there were a few things about the room that made me crazy.

First of all, the room was very small compared to other Hamptons. With the king-sized bed in the room, there was room for little else besides the small armoire housing the television, two night stands, a sitting chair in the corner, and a tiny desk with barely enough room for the mini coffee maker and a laptop. I was immediately struck by how spartan the furnishings were...there was not a sign of a decorator's touch, with very plain draperies, a simple white comforter (which I did like because I could easily see that it was clean), and not a picture or wall-hanging of any kind. I realize I wasn't moving into the place, but I expect a little more ambience for $220/night.

The bathroom was terrible. It was tiny, and there was ZERO counterspace on miniscule single-sink vanity. Housekeeping barely had enough room to cram the complimentary toiletries in the corner, and my curling iron balanced precariously on the 2:" edge...always on the verge of toppling into the sink. There was literally no room to leave out even a tube of toothpaste. This made it very tough for two people to get ready to go out at the same time, since (as I mentioned in the previous paragraph) there was not another mirror or any other usable surface anywhere in the room. The hair dryer was the type that is usually wall-mounted, but it wasn't...so the wall-mounting hardware dangled from the cord as you used it, banging around on everything. I really hated that bathroom, and it is the main reason that I am rating my stay in this hotel a "3".

The hotel puts out a better than average complimentary breakfast in the morning, with a good selection of hot and cold items. There always seemed to ba pastries and beverages set out in the lobby during the day, and there was also a snack and beverage offering every evening around 5:00 (which I did not partake of)..

The parking situation was not great, but I'm pretty sure it's not much better anywhere else in downtown Charleston. There was a parking garage adjacent to the hotel that charged $12/day (cash only, but for an additional $3/day you could put the parking charges on your room bill). Realistically, we shouldn't have even bothered renting a car, because it is so easy and cheap to get around in the city.

This property was nice enough, but because of the room (and bathroom) size, I would probably book elsewhere if I visit Charleston again.
