Owner description: Experience the sounds that define Charleston's musical history...from gospel to Gershwin. Each weekly live concert features music of the Civil War; light classics of the venerable St. Cecelia Society; the music of George Gershwin, who wrote "Porgy & Bess" during a summer in Charleston; gospel spirituals sung by slaves as they passed through the port of Charleston; and "Amazing Grace", the words of which were inspired in the composer, John Newton, while he worshipped in our host venue, Circular Congregational Church. Frommers Travel Guide says, "the best night out in Charleston...a must see performance. Visit our website or call the box office for concert dates and ticket information.

Unfortunately on the night we went to see this show both my girlfriend and I felt this show was not what we expected. After all the great reviews and the description of the show we were looking forward to a fun 90 musical performance. We read that they do historical, jazz and gospel music. We had operatic (which we don't personally care for) and the "southern" music was rather amateurish. The best part of the show which made the evening worth the money was the pure southern sole music at the very end of the performance.

We attended the evening performance and enjoyed it. The program is only about 90 minutes and it moves along nicely, The performers are great musicians and the narrator, Bill, adds in the history of the music and how it relates to the region.
On a practical level -- allow some time to tour the historic cemetary next to the church, very interesting stories on some of the tomb stones. Parking is in the area, it can be a bit pricey even in the evening and there are places to eat near by.

We attended this wonderful evening during our visit to Charleston. It is held in the Circular Congregational Church which was within walking distance of The Jasmine House Inn where we were staying. I cannot imagine visiting Charleston without including this concert. It takes you "From Gospel to Gershwin" and by covering this spectrum, brings the flavour of Charleston and the South right into your heart. There is so much history in this part of the South. This concert highlights the history in such a special way.

My new husband and I came to Charleston for our honeymoon. We were there for 2 weeks and had the trip of our dreams. We made reservations for Sound of Charleston online prior to arriving, and it was one of the the best decisions we made. My husband said it was has favorite part of the entire trip. We loved hearing the stories pertaining to each song and the performers made us feel as though we were a part of Charleston back in the day. The Circular Congregational Church was an experience in itself. You will be missing a fabulous evening if you do not include the Sound of Charleston in your plans.
