“A Gem of a Small Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2011

Yes, our room was average size for any chain hotel, but it was clean and extremely comfortable with nice linens, heavy damask drapes, free wifi, and comfy chairs. Crystal on the table with free water bottles, Hermes (smells wonderful) bath amenities, robes and slippers laid out at turndown, free coffee and tea service plus fresh fruit on the floor all day, wonderful pastries and juice, coffee, tea in the morning, NYTimes newspaper. We were on the market side and was fearful of possible noise -- absolutely quiet in the room.

The hotel appears to be a well maintained old building, but in reality was only built in 1992. The decor, charm and character exude class with beautiful warm woods, marble, and colorful oil paintings in the public areas.

The Pavillions on the top floor is really cozy with a small pool, covered bar area and tons of tables with umbrellas. Clear plexiglass panels keeps you from blowing away up there, but doesn't obstruct the view.

Every member of the staff there is totally service oriented. All smiles.

We had the best steak dinner we have ever had at Grill225 -- puts the equally expensive chains to shame. Their unique selection, aging, and preparation of the steaks was absolute perfection. Have never been to a restaurant that serves you enough butter for your rolls, potato, etc. -- here you receive a large slab of soft sweet creamy butter. The most unique Ceasar Salad presentation we have ever received -- yummy! Christina, our waiter, was very informative, reserved, and totally service oriented. We reserved one of the 3 side booths. Very lucious, quiet. They also have 4 wonderfully private high backed circular banquettes that can be reserved from 2 to 6 people. Grill 225 is expensive, but the hotel offered a $50 voucher to be used on premise, which basically covers the tip for a dinner for 2. Rebecca Stahlman, the Food and Beverage Manager, was totally understanding and efficient in resolving a reservation mix-up. She handled it with style and reserve. Can't say enough about all the staff -- the reception desk people and concierge were exceptional too.

Our carriage picked us up right in front of the hotel and took us on a private tour of the historic district. We used Classic Carriage and the driver was knowledgeable, but was more impressed with the look of the white private carriage of Palmetto Tours. We had our tour scheduled for 5 p.m. That was perfect because the sun had gone down enough to keep our ride a sunless, cooler breeze experience. Would not advise a mid-day tour - earlier morning and after 5 probably best.

There is a large umbrella in the room to help with hiding from the sun or rain, but I advise taking along a hand fan too, especially when walking during the daytime. Now I know why all those southern belles carried hand fans. Can't imagine how hot they must have been in all those petticoats.

Requested to see a King Corner Suite. Saw 2. Although a large room, it is just a large room with a king bed. Would rather use the difference in price in Grill 225. Of course, you do get "concierge level" extras even though you may not be on the concierge level.

Room Tip: All rooms are very quiet.

Thank you so very much for your kind remarks. I am so very pleased you enjoyed your visit. Our staff does indeed work hard to exceed expectations and I know they will be excited to read your comments. I also appreciate your pictures, especially how you captured the great color we enjoy in our flowers and plantings in our rooftop Pavilion Bar. Thank you again for you sharing you visit with us. The staff will look forward to your return.

We stayed for 3 nights, the rooms were fantastic, large clean and comfortable, the location was perfect to walk anywhere in Charleston, we did not have a car nor did we need one. The hotel sits right next to The Market. The food at the Rest. (Grill 225) was excellent although a bit pricy. The service at the roof top bar at the tables was the worst I have ever seen. The bartenders were good, but the table service was non existant. There are not many tables and not a lot of drinking or eating at the time we went, we sat at a table for 15 min. while 4 diferent female I am guessing waitresses walked right past our table even bumping into my wife's chair several times and were NEVER even acknowledged, so I eventually went to the bar for a drink. Half an hour later after still being ignored by the table staff I again went to the bar for our second round...needles to say we left never to return there. The inside bartender "Stephen" (bartender at the grill 225) was excellent, friendly, courteous, funny and did an amazing job all by himself servicing the bar, bar tables and the restaurant as well!!! Needless to say we spent lots of time with Stephen. We will definately go to Charleston again and definately stay at the Market Pavillion, but will absolutely NOT be going to the roof top which is a shame because it is a nice spot, oh and there was plexiglass up so no air circulation on 90 deg evening, after questioning it I was told that it is up for the Winter for wind, cold protection, apparently forgetting to remove it for late May 90 deg temps not smart !!

Thank you for sharing your recent experience here at the hotel. I am pleased you found the rooms to be clean and comfortable and you are correct, it certainly is convenient to all that downtown has to offer. I know Stephen will be pleased to know how much you appreciated his efforts. Thank you for your candor regarding your service at the Pavilion Bar. Please know that we take your comments very seriously and will use your feedback to assist us with the service issues you mentioned. Finally, we did not forget to take down the plexi-glass walls. While the temperature can get high in April and May, the evenings historically can get chilli and windy. In order that we can serve our guests through out the entire day, the decision was made to wait until the end of May to take the plexi-glass.
Thank you again for your candor, we look forward to serving you again.

My husband and I along with our 8 year old son stayed at Market Pavilion for our anniversary. The rooms were very nice and the bed comfortable. The toiletries are very smelly. I have scent allergies so they were too much for me to handle. The concierge lounge was always stocked with beverages. The pool was freezing cold. The only one brave enough to go in was my son. We had drinks and a crab meat cocktail at the rooftop bar. The crab meat cocktail was huge. It a very good value for the price. They said it was blue crab but I have never seen lump blue crab that large. We also ate dinner at Grill 225 for our anniversary. The food was very good. I ordered the lobster which was a bit pricier than I am used to. It would have been nice if they offered a tail or a lobster smaller than 3 pounds. The only bad part was not at the hotel but on the streets themselves. The whole area smells like very warm horse pee. Overall a very nice stay.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us during your visit to our hotel. I am glad you found the room to be comfortable and the concierge lounge to have all that you needed. Hermes amenities direct from Paris are typically appreciated and I am sorry they were too strong for you. Grill 225 offers a great dining experience and I am pleased you enjoyed your dinner. Thank you again for your kind words; we look forward to serving you again.

Centrally located, with the rooftop pool as a bonus, the Market Pavilion is a great choice for Charleston. The rooms are large enough to be comfortable, and the bathrooms are even better, with separate tub & shower. Negatives are that lounge seating at the pool is very limited (should be reserved for hotel guests, but it isn't), and the food at the rooftop bar is mediocre at best.

Thank you for sharing your recent experience while staying with us. I am pleased you enjoyed your visit; our rooms and baths are indeed roomy and have great amenities. Being centrally located is also a great plus. Pool use is reserved for hotel guests and we do try to monitor that as best we can. We have received great comments about our menu at the Pavilion Bar; I am sorry you found it to be just mediocre.
We appreciate your comments and take them very seriously. Thank you again for your time in sharing your visit. We look forward to serving you again!

This place is a true delight. I stayed on the concierge level, which, as other reviewers
noted, includes continental breakfast, afternoon tea, and an evening reception, highlights of my stay in the hotel. Breakfast includes, amonst other things, lots of fresh fruit, lox, bagels, grits, cereal, yogurt, pastries - (the oat muffins were excellent)- and some delicious little egg souffles. Tea (2 - 4 pm) has finger sandwiches and loads of truly fine fresh-baked cookies. There are always ice-cold soft drinks and bottles of Figi water, fresh fruit, and premium teas available. All of this is offered in a cozy, intimate living-room setting accessible only to premium floor guests. The evening reception (6 - 8pm) including delicious hors d' oeuvres, was masterfully overseen by Suzanne or Cara, who were both an absolute delight: gracious, charming, and genuinely friendly and helpful. They shared great stories and made sure our glasses were full and all our needs were met. Wonderful!
The location is outstanding, the bed super comfy, the shower and bath, generous. The toiletries are spicy fragrant, and I liked them a lot.
The pool did not enchant me, but there are so many better things to do, anyway.
I didn't have occasion to try the restuarant, but everyone staying there who did could only rave about it.
I certainly didn't want to leave and look forward to returning. Highly recommended!

Thank you so very much for your kind words. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay on the concierge floor and all that it has to offer. Susanne and Cara will be pleased that their efforts did not go unnoticed. I am sorry you did not have the chance to dine in Grill 225. The high raves your heard are absolutely true. Perhaps you will have the chance next time you are with us.
Thank you again for sharing your visit, we hope to have the chance to serve you again!

We stayed at the Market Pavilion for 3 nights, having initially booked just 2. We enjoyed the hotel so much, we stayed another night. This was our first trip to Charleston and the Market Pavilion played a significant role in our overall experience. We stayed on the Concierge level, which we believe was well worth the difference in price. This included; hot breakfast, afternoon tea and sandwiches and early evening hors d'oeuvres and beverages. However, it was the service provided by the Concierge level hostess, Susanne, that really stood out and made our stay all the more enjoyable.

Our room on the fourth floor was quiet, spacious and very comfortable. The hotel's location in the heart of the historic district was perfect for exploring the city by foot. The hotel's Grill 225 lived up to its reputation as we enjoyed the best ribeye steaks we have ever tasted. The Pavilion bar on the roof was a relaxing place to have an afternoon beverage.

The supply of Hermes toiletries were not refreshed on our second day, but a phone call to housekeeping quickly rectified that. We were a little surprised that a couple of the doormen (same ones each time) never acknowledged or greeted us even though we were guests in the hotel for 3 days. We felt that these were minor issues though.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Market Pavilion and would not hesitate to stay there again.

Thank you for sharing your recent experience with us. I am pleased that you enjoyed your visit. I know Susanne wil be thrilled to learn how much of a positive influence she was during your stay. Grill 225 is indeed a unique experience and I am glad you felt it provided the best ribeye you ever tasted.
I certainly will discuss your comments with our doormen and hopefully you will not find that happening again upon your return.
We sincerely value your comments and appreciate your time and look forward to the opportunity to serve you again.

We spent our 30th anniversary at the Market Pavillon Hotel. It was absolutely wonderful. After the first night in our beautiful room they had a problem with a leak and needed to move us to another room. And to our very pleasant surprise they moved us to the Honeymoon Suite! It was incredible! Not only was the suite the nicest room we had ever stayed in, the entire staff was very accommodating. The two ladies who staffed the parlor on the conciege we're very friendly and helpful with ideas for day trips. It was so nice in the evening to sit and share stories with other guests! The dinner at Grill 225 was fabulous as well as our waiter Jess and his helper! They paid attention to detail and even gave a a beautiful plate of chocolate strawberries with "Happy 30th Anniversary" on it. The Pavillion Bar was beautiful and we enjoyed the atmosphere. Again thank you to the manager and everyone of Market Pavillon for stepping up and making our anniversary extra special!
