“Caution on ordering at the rooftop lounge”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

The room and the location are wonderful for a visit to Charleston. The fabled market is right downstairs and great restaurants (Magnolia, Cypress, Blossom) are only a block or two away. The staff was very helpful and the breakfast bar on each floor is a nice touch.

The rooftop lounge offers a great view of this beautiful city but don't order anything but pizza and salads. Other items are the menu are prepared downstairs and arrive in pretty poor condition. Or better yet, just go up to the rooftop for a drink.

Thank you for staying with us and being our guest at the Market Pavilion Hotel and the Pavilion Bar. I am so glad you enjoyed our location and your accommodations. As for the Pavilion Bar, I am not sure why you thought that everything is prepared in any other location that the full kitchen which is at the Pavilion Bar. All of our menu items are prepared and cooked at the Pavilion Bar. If you did not enjoy an item, we would have been more than pleased to offer you another option. We hope to see you again and look forward to your return.

We splurged for our anniversary on a corner king suite with concierge level access. The room was lovely, especially the huge marble bathroom with walk-in shower and jetted tub. Afternoon wine, cheese and hors d' oeuvres in the Parlor (part of the concierge service) was a great way to unwind after a day of walking, and it's only at a hotel like this where the young man serving your snacks could be a neurosurgeon from India who speaks 6 languages and is in the States getting his Masters in public health. "AJ" was worth the price of admission by himself. The rooftop lounge is a great spot, too. Most everything in Charleston is less than 5 stories, so being on the 5th floor roof affords views of the entire downtown area and the water. You can spend your $50 credit (if that is being offered) on alcohol, which is a bonus, but you're going to need it with the $15 martinis.

A few of minor negatives that I wouldn't have expected for the price. First, the lobby and restaurant were frigid -- literally a temperature for hanging meat, not eating it. It must have had something to do with bad zoning, because once you got back by the elevators, it wasn't as bad. Even if we could have afforded the restaurant, there is no way we could have eaten there without coats and hats. Second, the "full Southern Breakfast" on the concierge level was a bit more limited than I would have expected for the price. The egg dishes both days were dry, and there was never a "sweet" option (french toast or pancakes or the like). Wonderful sausage, grits, fruit and sweet rolls. The upgrade price for concierge is significant, and while the room size justifies much of the difference, I was expecting to be wowed by breakfast and just wasn't. Finally, there was no hair dryer in the room when we arrived. We called for one, and someone came to look for ours instead of just bringing one. (One doorbell ring). Then someone brought one but it didn't work (2); we called again, and they brought another that worked (3), then someone rang for turndown service (4). We just wanted to lie on the lovely (as it WAS lovely) bed after our long day of travel, but were up and down opening the door 4 times.

A lovely stay after that rough start, but I'd opt for a regular king room next time.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights and found this hotel to be just like the title here says. It is mostly good and you can't go wrong staying here as long as you don't expect 5 stars. The staff is wonderful. The concierge Kim, the front desk clerk Brent and others could not have been more friendly or helpful. The location is very convenient as well and an easy walk to everywhere you would want to visit in the historic district. The breakfast bar that they set up near the elevator in the morning is a nice touch but we wished they had real milk to go with the coffee instead of only half and half. Also, other than fruit, there is nothing healthy offered. The pastry platter is full of sticky, fattening choices. Some whole wheat breads would be a nice addition. Finally, the exercise room is small and two out of three machines were broken while we were there. Again, a nice place to stay overall, just not as good as it could be.

the hotel is lovely. The rooms are decorated to reflect the beautiful interiors of the Charleston homes. The rooms are quite large with comfortable beds and large bathrooms. Our bathroom had a marble walk-in shower as well as a large soaking tub. Housekeeping standards are high. Coffee and tea are available most of the day and in the mornings, trays of bakery goods, fresh fruit, and pitchers of juice allow you to enjoy breakfast in your room.

My husband and I got married in Charleston and return each year for our anniversary. We have sampled all the top hotels and this one wins hands down. Unbeatable location on the corner of East Bay, walking distance to everything, lovely rooftop bar, and the best steak in Charleston at the in house restaurant, Grill 225. The rooms are spacious, clean and well-appointed. I can't say enough positive about this hotel. However, the measure of anything is how adversity is handled....We had a small issue on our last visit and contacted the General Manager, Peter Wright. Not only did Mr. Wright handle the situation professionally, he made us feel even more loyalty toward his hotel. We have found a home away from home in our favorite city! I think anyone who values quality and enjoys the feel of a boutique European style hotel will love the Market Pavilion.

We stayed at the Market Pavilion Hotel on our past two trips to Charleston and we thoroughly enjoyed our stays. The location is fantastic--right in the center of town within walking distance of everything in downtown Charleston. When you first arrive at the hotel you most likely will be greeted by Havin the personable and welcoming doorman. He definitely sets the mood for your stay in Charleston! The rooms are good sized and very comfortable. The continental breakfast that comes with your room is a nice touch, but if you want something more substantial than coffee, juice and pastries (they are delicious) you'll have to to walk to one of the nearby restaurants. For lunch and dinner their rooftop bar/restaurant is fantastic and has great views over the rooftops of the city. Their steakhouse, Grill 225, is one of our all-time favorite steakhouses. The food is delicious and the waiters are always top notch. We received meal vouchers with our room and our only complaint is that their use is really restrictive. You have to have them with you and every time you use them you get a new one with the balance remaining. They make it a bit complicated for guests as most hotels just credit them to your room. Aside from that we loved the hotel and will definitely stay again on our next trip!

There were parts of this hotel which were good…lunch on the roof ( best crab cocktail ever!) and the location. The rooms are a disappointment however. The furniture is overly large and the "art" work is of poor quality. The room could have been anywhere.
Continental breakfast on each floor is a good idea and the service personnel are efficient and friendly. There are better places to stay with more Southern charm than this hotel.
