We spent three nights of our honeymoon here. We had stayed a few times prior to that and had a good experience. Fair warning, it is quite rustic but we knew that from our previous stays and aimed for that experience. The Plantation in walking distance with free admission was outstanding and we loved it. The Charleston style garden tub was wonderful as usual. The restaurant was pricey but worth it.

They accept pets and we had to move rooms because the people upstairs of us just left their dog in the room for hours while they went out. It barked NON-STOP for hours. Something to keep in mind cause repacking all our stuff and lugging it round was not my idea of a good time. Luckily they had another room to change us to, but we have been there when it was totally full or another room would have cost a huge upgrade fee.

The HORRIBLE part of this trip was yet to come. My in laws were paying for our stay as our wedding gift to the tune of well over five hundred dollars in an upgraded room with river view. Father in law made the reservation with his credit card and we even called them to make sure they would be able to charge the room to it even if we didn't have his card with us. They assured us it was no problem. So we check in and they require a credit card to swipe for incidentals, room service, etc. When my husband gave them the card he again reminded them that we had already reserved under father in laws card and explained the gift situation. We were again reassured that the room would not be charged to our credit card. And we ordered no room service or incidentals of any kind.

They indeed charged the entire stay to our card, in fact I think they may have actually charged it twice or put a outrageously huge hold on funds at check in. This was despite being told NOTHING would be charged. It tied up nearly our ENTIRE available credit limit, which was what we planned to use for our major honeymoon expenses, including another two nights planned elsewhere after leaving Middleton. We tried to get it reversed and were told that it would take several days to even process if they were even able to get a hold of the manager that same day. We had to cut our trip short and majorly scale back what we did while we were there. We couldn't get the charges reversed until after getting home and it took several calls to the management to get it done. They really seemed like they just didn't care and their mistakes caused the same effect of someone basically robbing us on the street on our honeymoon. I hope to only ever have one wedding and one honeymoon and I was totally devastated by it being well ruined by their carelessness.

Room Tip: Woods view is significantly cheaper and the view is not much better. In summer you can't see the river all that well anyway and the best views are on foot. The deluxe room as a little sitting area, which is nice but if you aren't planning on spending lots of time just hanging out the room then a standard is more than sufficient.

It is unfortunate, that after previous good stays as this guests states that such a mishap occurred. Unfortunately this was not a situation I was made aware of, nor is it one I have had to deal with before. I encourage this guest to contact me directly to discuss, and I can go over the steps taken since December (when they stayed) to ensure this will never be a problem again for future guests. As always, contact me with any questions. Abigail M. Martin, General Manager

We spent a couple nights at the Inn at Middleton Place in mid-March. Everything was exceptional from the simple continental breakfast at the Lake House in the morning to the evening beer and wine reception. Our room was simple but large, clean, and unique. Fireplaces in each room. Large bathrooms with huge vanities and tubs. We enjoyed the gardens which go on forever and the historic plantation buildings. It's a great place for walking and photography. The architecture is unique to put it mildly. The pool was closed as it was too early in the season and we would have rented kayaks to paddle on the Ashley River if we had more time. The only down side is that it's about 30-45 minutes from historic Charleston. This is not a huge problem as we drove in one day and parked at the Visiter Center.

The photos on the Inn's website look a lot better than reality. Maybe part of the problem was that we arrived after dark, the check-in building was empty with a "back in 5 minutes" sign on the door. After more than 10 minutes and several unanswered phone calls, someone finally appeared from within and gave us our keys. Lighting in the parking areas was poor, paths were not lit at all, and lighting near rooms was minimal and filled with huge mosquitoes. The room was okay. Breakfast was minimal. I wouldn't go back. The plantation was fascinating and beautiful. If you plan to see Charleston it's not close and access is a heavily traveled commuter road.

My wife and I made reservations at the Inn for our 7th wedding anniversary. We were unable to make reservations in downtown Charleston because we were a little late doing so and the Inn was one of the few places that had an open room at such short notice. We had our reservations about staying that far away from the main atraction in the area, but were really looking forward to staying away from all the hub-lub going on downtown. We figured for the amount of money that we payed, the room would have been in a little bit better shape than it was, but all in all I wouldn't say that it was a bad stay. The TV could have been updated a little bit, but we loved the rustic nature of the rooms so we could overlook that a bit. It would have been nice to have a better place to sit inside the room besides the bed and some wooden chairs, but we didnt do much but sleep in there anyway. We stayed during a wedding and were awakened a couple of times late at night due to some drunken antics, but hey, havent we all been there before? We were neither wowed nor disappointed with our stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in 114 on the first floor. It is great for carrying your luggage in, but not for quiet nights.

It is all about expectations. If you were expecting the Ritz Carlton, forget it you did not pay nearly enough. It has spacious, rustic rooms with lots of built-ins. It was very clean, but a little worn. Each room has a glass wall overlooking woods or river. Terrific location with paths through the woods and benches overlooking the Ashley River. You can walk to the gardens but you will have to negotiate at least nine large steps (otherwise drive 1/4 mile or so).

There is nothing fancy about the rooms. Forget the TV, instead read a book or open the wooden shutters and enjoy the view. They gave us a couple complimentary bottles of water and a bag of nuts and dried fruit. You will need the water, bring extra, because the water out of the tap tastes bad. Also if you have short legs, stepping over the shower sill could be a challenge although there is a grab rail. The room has excellent WiFi, with a router right in the room.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The nightly complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres were great, with she-crab soup one night. We also thought the healthy start breakfast was just fine and we enjoyed the spacious dining room and nice view.

The Inn exceeded our expectations, but our expectations were obviously different than some of the reviewers. We hope to return each year.

Room Tip: If you have difficulty with steps ask for a walk-in room.
