The inn does a wonderful job of keeping you immersed in the natural beauty of the adjacent Middleton Place. Two of our room's four walls were floor to ceiling plantation-style shutters, which you could close for privacy at night and then open during the daytime to enjoy the view of the river and forests (be sure to reserve river-view room!). A relaxing, sylvan retreat, and the rooms are comfortable and clean. I highly recommend this inn for anyone who is outdoorsy and who loves nature and history. Just a note - due to the inn's closeness with nature, we did find some bugs in the otherwise clean room. Not a complaint, just wanted to give a heads up to any city-fied people who aren't accustomed to cabins or forests, though the inn is the most regal and pampering "cabin" we've ever stayed in!

The inn is worth the price of the room, though we were able save money using Groupon, and by having three people share one room with a queen bed and a sofa bed.

Definitely plan on at least one day to take in the inn's own offerings, since it is an oasis in itself. We also enjoyed taking advantage of the manager's reception in the evenings at the Lodge, during which you can enjoy wine and cheese while visiting with other guests or simply taking in the view of the Ashley River. I also loved the hammocks and chairs along the river, which made us slow down and just enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Also, the inn is within walking distance of the historic site and gardens, the equestrian center (the trail ride, praised by National Geographic, is a must), and the restaurant. The roads are deliberately unpaved to keep the experience of nature and history complete, so avoid wearing heels while there. I was able to get away with some sparkly flats to walk to the restaurant. :)

Room Tip: Definitely reserve a river-view room - the Ashley River is so serene and spectactular.

It's all true. My partner and I stayed 3 nights and were so glad we chose the inn, rather than someplace in Charleston. The special feeling of the inn soon came over us, beginning when we went to The Lodge for the manager's nightly reception. We took our complimentary wine outside and just sat on a bench, gazing at the Ashley river and rice marsh beyond. The experience was TOTALLY QUIET! Being from a city of one million, this was like heaven. We used some of the wood at the foot of our stairs and had a lovely fire in the fireplace one evening.
These are our main likes: * Wonderful dinner, and also a lunch, in the restaurant * White table cloth breakfast every morning in the Lake House (get a window seat.) * No paved roads! * Flickering kerosene torches lighting the way to the restaurant at night * Comfy bed * Neat (and spotless) bathtub * Riverside walking path to the plantation. * Plantation tickets including in the room charge...a bargain.
Dislikes: only the slow moving, busy traffic to and from Charleston. But in balance...it was totally worth it. Sure hope we can come back someday.

Room Tip: We asked for and received an upstairs room, which was very quiet.

I spent two nights at the Inn and must agree with many other reviewers about how pleasant the rooms and grounds are. The evening happy hour was delightful, and the morning breakfasts were good and plentiful, with lots of healthy options. Service was outstanding in all regards. The proximity to Middleton Place is a huge plus; it is a gorgeous and easy walk to get into the gardens. My only problem was AC not working the evening I arrived; it was fixed the next day. I was in an upper level room (which I had requested), and it was quiet, large, lovely, and like being in a treehouse. I hope to have the opportunity to return to the area; if I do, I will definitely stay at the inn again.

The Inn is part of a non-profit organization that manages the Middleton property. The Inn worked well for us, because we enjoy a bit more rustic surroundings - for example, unpaved roads and pedestrian paths, among many trees. the accommodations are classic modern, though not at international hotel chain standards - which we didn't see as a minus. The way the rooms are laid out, we heard virtually no noise from any other room, and had a view of the Ashley River. The evening wine and cheese offering (5-7) was generous, together with the breakfast in the Lake House were included in the price of the room. There was some confusion at breakfast among the staff (over the 4 days we were there) about whether or not to charge extra for toast, but there were plenty of filling (and healthy) items offered, so that was a minor irritation. A significant plus for guest of the Inn is having full, complementary access to the Plantation property - a 5 minute walk away. (There is also an organic farm on the property, written up in the Newsletter in the room, though the reception staff we're not aware of it, and couldn't direct us to it.). Overall, we recommend this and would return if in the area again.

The facility was very spacious, with view to Ashley River. Walls are mostly windows with shutters which gives you the freedom to select amount of light you want in.
The room is equipped with fridge, coffee maker, wonderful USA Charleston tea, iron, flat screen tv! Fireplace, flash light (if you want to take a stroll through the trails at dusk/night, parasol/umbrella outside your room for your use ( it does rain in April and May!)

One strong recommendation: bring good hiking shoes! there is extensive walking to see the plantation.

breakfast is served at the conference room, very healthy and wholesome. The staff very attentive and accommodating.

DO NOT miss the complementary manager's reception at 5 PM. Beer, wine, cheeses, fruits and the best fresh crab cakes in the world!!

A wonderful management makes this Inn a top 10 place to stay in. Biggest thanks to Manager Abigail!

For individuals with mobility problems just be aware that there are steps to clime to get to your room.

The site seeing is awesome, if you have not had the chance to see Versailles (outside Paris) this is a smaller version of it. You also get a chance to see alligators resting along the banks of river! hear the frogs and other animals, overall a fantastic experience.

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems, request a ground floor level room.

I had been looking forward to staying at the inn for two years. The grounds, architecture, food, and unique experience didn't disappoint. Coming from the north, we were surprised that most of the expansive windows in the rooms were inoperable. This was a bit of a disappointment since we wanted to sleep with them open at night to hear the wildlife on the grounds. It was a really warm period, perhaps unseasonably ,at near 90 degrees. If the pool had been open, we definitely would have stayed another night to relax by the pool. The restaurant on the grounds of Middleton Place is one of the best in Charleston---make reservations and do not miss that opportunity. The walk to the restaurant and Middleton Place gardens from the inn was something we looked forward to every day.
I definitely agree with other reviewers about using the map of the gardens for walking. There is so much to see. Be ready to take photos at every turn.

I definitely recommend taking time to spend a night at the Inn at Middleton Place. We had a queen bedroom, on the top floor. The room itself is clean and comfortable, although the format of the inn feels a bit dated. However, all of the extra perks make up for all of this.

You should arrive to have time to enjoy the manager's reception with free drinks and snacks. Go on time though, as some of the coveted items (like the shrimp) go fast! Then, take time to go over to the plantation gardens and walk around. When we did this, we nearly had the place to ourselves. Same thing in the early morning. Admission to the gardens and the house are included, so this makes your stay even more worth it!
