“An Excellent Stay in the center of Charleston's Historic District”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2012

Perfect location, excellent hospitality, attractive rooms, at a reasonable price right in the heart of Charleston's historic district. We were able to walk everywhere from this hotel. The parking is free in a city where parking is tight or at a fee. The queen rooms are small, so we switched to two doubles for a few nights and a king for the rest of the stay. They have a nice breakfast every morning for a reasonable cost. However there are much better choices to eat everywhere in Charleston. All of the staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. The room has a frig and safe. Everything was clean and well cared for. Furnishings were attractive. It was quiet. I am very picky about where I stay, and thought I would want one of the more historic hotels.
There are many expensive places to stay in Charleston, but we will be staying at the King Charles when we return to Charleston. We loved it there.

Room Tip: Go for the two double beds or the king room.

My husband and I have been staying at the King Charles Inn yearly for going on about ten years, I feel it is one of the best kept secrets in Charleston! Here is a quick rundown of the things we love:
We are always welcomed back with a personal note and small treat. The staff is personable and friendly. Last year, the housekeeper saw my then three year old coloring on the hotel paper. The next day, she left a coloring book and crayons lying on his bed. I have never seen a more thoughtful thing in any other hotel! The price is very affordable, especially considering you are about 2-3 blocks from the market. They have a pool with fountains and plenty of seating around it. We have always encountered friendly patrons here, as the atmosphere lends itself to engaging in conversation. They have coffee and water out and available all day long, and a manager's reception and happy hour daily. The rooms have been renovated in the last few years and are nicely decorated and comfortable. They have FREE parking. They even allow you to leave your car parked until 4 on the day you check out. This year we requested the Junior Suite. It is a large room with a king bed, seating area, and fold out couch. It has windows on Meeting Street and Hassel Street. This is a "people watcher's" paradise! We enjoyed just watching the activity on the street outside our windows! You can walk anywhere downtown within 20-30 minutes, depending on your pace! Great shopping on King Street is directly behind the hotel.

I read another review where people complained that this room was noisy at night, and it was a little, but we live on a busy road and are accustomed to street noise. If you are sensitive to such noise, then I would not recommend THIS room to you, however there are many other nice rooms. We equally enjoy the king rooms with balcony access, particularly on the third floor, and the queen rooms with balcony access- just personal preferences. Another good thing about the Junior Sweet is it is literally about ten steps from access to the pool, which is very convenient! The a/c is ICE COLD, which was great for the 100 degree weather we had this month. The breakfast is delicious, but a little pricey. However, it is competitively priced with the other places that offer breakfast downtown.

We have stayed at the Planters Inn, the Mills House, the Renaissance, and others, but we keep coming back to what we love and what we feel is our place- the King Charles. Thank you for making us feel appreciated and valued as customers!

This place saved south Carolina for our family. We had just spent a week at the myrtle beach resort. Horrible.
We left a day early.
The good started in the phone call to see if a room was available! The lady at the desk was very friendly and helpful. We got to the hotel and pulled into the drive and a guy was out the door to greet me and ask me if I needed any help. Checking in was nice. The lady explained everything I needed to know plus some! The room was very clean. Small, but very nice.
Very happy with stay here. Will return. Planning a cruise next year out of Charleston. Will stay here a couple days on either side of cruise.

Spent three nights over the 4th of July at the BW King Charles Inn and what a great experience. The hotel is located on Meeting Street and very easy access to all the sights in Historic Charleston. Less than 5 min walk to Market Street and about a gentle 30min stroll to the South Battery area.

The staff in the hotel are fantastic and very friendly. Special mention to Ryan in the bar as he knows lots of detail about bars and restaurants in the city. He can get sample menus and his recommendations were spot-on for what we wanted. Sermet's and Poogans Porch were two of the restaurants we used and they were both excellent, so thanks Ryan.

Hotel parking is great and we could abandon the car and walk everywhere easily. Never made breakfast as we were too lazy to get up in time but the view of others was it was better than other BW hotels. If you miss breakfast we would recommend a cafe called Whisk which is down the street just past Hymans for great coffee and lovely pastries in the morning. In the hotel there is a nice little bar where you can sit inside or outside (we sat in as it was so hot outside) and there is a small area with two PCs off the bar for on-line needs.

We chose a room with a balcony which due to the heat (95degrees +) we hardly used. The balconies appear to be mostly shared with other rooms although each room gets two rocking chairs to sit on. The view from most of the balconies is into the central car park which if I'm honest is not the most attractive view of Charleston. Some rooms may have better views though. Personally I wouldn't pay extra for a balcony when we return to this hotel. The room was really nice though and definitely of a higher standard than other BW hotels. We were in room 320 which was next to the vending area. Point to note is that other guests seemed to need ice at various times of the night (???) and the sound of ice crashing into various plastic ice buckets is pretty loud. Not quite sure why people need such a huge quantity of ice at 2am but live and let live I suppose !!

Overall this is a great hotel located in the best part of town for eating, sightseeing and generally getting around. Free car parking is a bonus and the great staff make this our number one choice for staying in Charleston. A good balance of comfort and cost, thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the vending area if you are a light sleeper as the ice machines are noisy...

King Charles in is excellent location, rooms maybe bit small and pool is right above meeting street but more than acceptable. Large self parking is great and walking to The Market, Waterfront and fine restaurants or if your lazy like me you hail a Pedi Cab!! Enjoy my Charleston if your visiting from out of town. Need info on Charleston Sc happy to help louisrusso@bellsouth.net happy to respond. Be well

The thing I liked best about this hotel was the location, it's basically walking distance to most things of interest. We had a deluxe room which was fine, we overlooked the car park but were not bothered by any noise. We did find the room to be rather compact probably because the bed frames are so huge. The staff in the hotel are really great especially the guy that served drinks in the little bar. He always chatted to us and was very knowledgeable about Charleston. The breakfast was average at best, we tried it once but when we were told the scrambled eggs were made out of boxed eggs we didn't bother again! I guess that is to be expected at the price they charge. All in all a pretty decent hotel and perfect for our needs.

We stayed three nights here and it is perfect. We are visitors from the UK and had a hire car but we found that in Charleston with a hotel in this location we did not need to use it as it is easy to walk around the downtown area. We were lucky enough to find parking at the hotel (which is free for guests) so was able to leave the car there. The room was clean and tidy, a regular queen size and whilst the room was small compared to other US hotel bedrooms it served us perfectly. We loved it. The bed was so comfortable. The breakfast was reasonable and there is tea and coffee available at anytime. We used the pool only once as we were too busy exploring Charleston. Guest services staff were very helpful. Overall it was a great experience.
