We recently spent 3 nights in the University Guesthouse, which is managed by the Cannonboro Inn owner and staff and provides all the services and amenities of the Inn. We and our friends had the two upstairs bedrooms, both of which were spacious and comfortable. The downstairs bedroom was occupied over the 3 nights we were there by 2 different parties. Big pluses of the Guesthouse are the huge size of the bathrooms, privacy, the feeling of being in your own home and excellent off-street parking. We enjoyed sitting and visiting in the living room and even played cards one evening at the kitchen table!

Our visit was a family get-together and a trip to show off Charleston to our friends, who had never been there. My oldest granddaughter lives just down the street from the Cannonboro and her parents and younger sister drove into town for the weekend. Our room had a queen and a twin bed. When we asked Lynn, the manager, if it would be alright if our youngest granddaughter spent one night with us, she very graciously allowed it....even informing us what breakfast would be the next morning and asking if our granddaughter preferred something else. Speaking of breakfast, they were fabulous! We've stayed in several B&Bs in Charleston and theirs was the best. The dining area is a little small, so if all the guests arrive at the same time for breakfast some have to sit out on the piazza, which was a little chilly the second morning. We also enjoyed owner Barry's conversation about Charleston and the Civil War era, as we had been on a Civil War tour the previous day. Lynn was super informed about great restaurants and luckily we had already made reservations at one of her favorites.

The downside of the Cannonboro Inn is its distance from the main downtown area. You will need to drive or take public transportation, unless you enjoy walking! It is also located across the street from the medical center and university, which takes bit away from the cozy neighborhood feel some of the other streets in this area have. It is, however, well located to some fine north end restaurants and if you do like to walk, there are some beautiful and historic homes and buildings in the area. Another negative was there was no comfortable place for us to sit in our room. The twin bed took up space that could have easily accommodated a sofa or a couple of club chairs. But the privacy of the house and living room compensated for that. All in all, we would most definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for the downstairs bedroom in the Guesthouse if taking luggage up and down stairs is a problem.

We just spent 3 nights at the Canonboro Inn. We loved talking to the Innkeeper (Lynn) and Barry (the owner) regaled everyone with the history of Charleston. The room was very nice and clean, the shower was adequate, but just barely. Especially nice was the 4 o'clock wine and appetizers. A lovely way to sit and unwind after a day of being a tourist. Breakfast was delightful. The major downside of the Inn is that it is about a 30-40 minute walk into town.

Thank you for staying with us at the Cannonboro! We really enjoyed your company!
Springtime in Charleston is always so busy and it sure is nice to come back to the inn out of all the busy tourist area and relax with wine and a bite on the piazza. We hope to have you return to visit.
MANY HAPPY RETURNS!

Stayed for 5 nights in late March and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We had room 3 on the second floor with is on the side of the building. Rooms 1 and 2 are on the front of the building but the road outside is not particularly busy at night so I think any of the rooms would be very good. The room was large and tastefully decorated. As is often the case in B&B's, the basin was in the bedroom and the bathroom was quite small - though perfectly adequate and the shower was very large and powerful. For light sleepers, note that the thermostat for the heating/air conditioning is located directly outside the room. I could hear it cutting in and out which disturbed my first nights sleep but when I mentioned this to the staff they said by all means turn it off so I did so each evening and it didn't bother me after that. All the rooms have lovely wood floors and I thought this might make it noisy but it was very quiet.

The communal balcony on the floor is large with plenty of seating. The front of the balcony gets the afternoon sun so it is very pleasant to sit there and relax after a days walking.

As others has mentioned, the wine and nibbles in the afternoon are lovely and it was very enjoyable to sit and have a drink and chat with fellow guests. The breakfasts were varied and delicious and beautifully presented though more than one course would have been appreciated. Coffee was excellent too.

Barry and his team are very friendly and helpful. We loved that Barry appeared each morning and looked forward to hearing his stories about the history of Charleston.

The historic centre is walkable but the free trolley bus is only a couple of blocks walk away. The trolley buses are great and take you to all the locations you might want to visit in the historic district. There is also a public bus to the Tanger outlet mall. To visit plantations you'll either need to take a cab or book a tour. Staff at the Inn can assist with this though the trolley bus stops at the Visitor Centre and you can book tickets for anything you want there - at a discount.

We loved Charleston and hope to return in the future and we would definitely stay at the Cannonboro Inn again or it's sister property, the Ashley Inn.

My sister and I spent 2 nights at the Cannonboro Inn and loved all the little extra touches, the furnishings and our room. The breakfasts were beautifully prepared and delicious, when we walked in after 5pm, there was a container of chilled wine and snacks set out so pretty on the dining table. My sister and I were able to sit and relax in this charming place, take pictures and really get a feel for this beautiful home. The owner of the Inn was very well educated on Charleston history and shared great stories with us. We also loved that the free trolley was just about 2 blocks from the Inn, so easy to get everywhere! Would definitely recommend this Inn to everyone I know.

Thank you for your lovely review! We certainly enjoyed you and your sister's company! Barry, the owner sure does know his history! It is an inspiring way to start the day at breakfast to hear him speak of details which include our historic neighborhood and home.
We hope to see you again!

We stayed at the Cannonboro primarily because we could not find a place in the historic district. We were very satisfied with our choice and found the staff to be helpful not only with our accommodations, but with helping find a tour that fit our schedule. Everything was very clean and breakfasts were very good. The afternoon wine, cheese and crackers were a nice touch also.

The only complaint (a small one) was that our room (no. 6) was downstairs next to the room where breakfast was served. Both mornings we were wakened by the staff moving chairs and setting up the room for breakfast. This was around 7:30 am.

Room Tip: Avoid room 6 if you want to sleep late.

Thank you for the great review! It is a catch 22 with our house...antique furniture and hardwood floors. This lends little noise in the morning in setting up for breakfast, although we do try to keep the guests in mind while doing this. We apologize for the disturbance and have taken the tip for any future guests.
Please come stay with us again if in Charleston!
