Battery Carriage House Inn
Ranked #19 of 39 Charleston B&B and Inns
Reviewed 6 March 2007

Fabulous location, fabulous concierge, fabulous garden, good (for Charleston) prices, cozy rooms, and a possible ghost!

The Battery Carriage House is located within a nineteenth century residence on the the south tip of Charleston, opposite a quiet park in perhaps the fanciest neighborhood east of Pacific Heights (San Francisco). Although there are few restaurants nearby, the walk into town is short (10 minutes), exquisite, and necessary (the food is very good and very plentiful and you will want to walk it off).

Rooms are small but nicely decorated and they all face a beautiful interior courtyard (no street noise).

A modest continental breakfast is included and it can be brought to your room or served in the garden.

While it's not quite an Architectural Digest environment, you get a nice room and surroundings and a very pleasant and helpful staff.

I'd return in a heartbeat.

As hoteliers ourselves, we know how difficult it is to get everything absolutely right for everybody.
The Battery Carriage Inn certainly did it for us.
The location is superb, just walk out of the property and you are surrounded by an architectural wonderland.
The staff were very helpful recommending two excellent restaurants (Carolinas and Blossoms) and it was a delight to have those amazing hot fresh french pastries and real coffee brought on a tray to our room each morning.

Definately no hesitation in returning.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights. We have been to Charleston before and this was the best bed and breakfast I have stayed in. We absolutely love it! We had a king room that had a nice patio and faced the park. It was so nice to eat breakfast out there every monrning. The staff was nice and made sure everything was in order. It is great because you can park there for free across the street unlike other hotels there where you have to pay. Nothing bad to say about this place! Everything was great!!!

Location is what makes this bed and breakfast. I enjoyed the surrounding scenery of the harbour and Battery Park. As for the inn, it is just average. The bathroom is very small...but it worked. It is just a continental breakfast of juice, coffee/tea, and croissant. I went in off-season and paid only $100 and it was worth it. But I would not pay more for it......and I would choose a different B&B next time.

My husband and I honeymooned at the Battery Carriage House. It was perfect. Best location downtown Charleston. I have been to Charleston hundreds of times in the past and learned more about the city this visit because the staff was so accomodating and gave us great advice on where to go and what to do. Champagne was sent to our room compliments of the Carriage House the night we arrived and chocolates were even left on the bed while we were out during the day....Very romantic......We plan on going back for our anniversary!

The 1843 Battery Carriage House is in a great location, right in the heart of Charleston. The bed and breakfast is located right across the street from a beautiful park, lined with trees; scattered about the park are statues and war relics. My room was fairly spacious and contained a four poster bed. I would highly recommend this B&B because of its decor, location, and overall feeling that you are experiencing quentissential Charleston at its best.

We stayed at the 1843 Battery Carriage House for 2 nights in early December. Mostly, we loved it. As others have written before me, the heating was difficult to regulate. We were in a downstairs room and it got quite chilly. The heater was so noisy that we couldn't watch tv. We had to turn the heat on during commercials!!!! The breakfast was okay but I've had better breakfasts at the Hampton Inn or even other cheaper hotels. I thought for the money, we would get a better breakfast. When many B&Bs are offering gourmet breakfasts, it seems a shame to offer such boring fare.

Other than that, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was small but the bed was comfortable and the room was nicely decorated. The grounds were beautiful and the Inn is within walking distance of town. I would probably return.
