“Historic hotel with awesome breakfast”
Reviewed 14 June 2013

This building was formerly the main building of The Citadel Military Academy, so it's got a lot of history and is very pretty inside and out. The location is on the north end of town, very near the museum, shuttle, aquarium and some historic homes. The staff was very helpful, too. The room rate includes breakfast, which includes made-to-order omelets, fresh fruit and good coffee. Maybe the only downside is that the room only had a small window, since the building was designed as student housing and not as a hotel. But for me the other good qualities more than made up for this, and I would certainly stay here again.

Our visit was business and pleasure as my husband had to tend to business in Walterboro. We also had our adult son and his girlfriend with us. We chose to stay in Charleston so we had things to do during the day while dh was away. This hotel is perfectly located to walk out the door and enjoy the city. We were lucky enough to arrive on a Sunday and King St. was closed off during the afternoon hours so we could roam freely through streets and shop and eat. There are plenty of good restaurants within walking distance and the shopping is endless on King Street. The hotel itself is a bit unique, not like a typical Hilton property, but that was very much part of the charm of the hotel. The rooms were a bit smaller than they appeared in pictures on the hotel site but we managed just fine. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The Manager's Reception offered small bites and drinks each night, which was nice and the breakfast was always good and plentiful, especially the made-to-order eggs/omelets. It was also clean, which is a major requirement for me when staying at a hotel. I would definitely recommend this hotel and stay here again.

We requested feathers be removed from our room, as I am highly allergic. Came in to find all but 1 of our pillows were feather pillows! Completely unacceptable. It is now 11:30 pm, and I've got a long night of dealing with hives ahead of me. I will never stay in this hotel again.

This hotel was amazing! We were greeted as soon as we arrived. Our room was ready early. The managers gathering in the evening was wonderful with a variety of snacks, beer, cordials, and wine. The made to order breakfast was perfect with many different items to choose from. The hotel is in an old building with lots of charm. Expect high ceilings with smaller accommodations (not much leg room in the bedroom). The bathroom was spacious and brightly lit. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be traveling there again in the fall.

This hotel is for you if you care about history and location. You don't pick this hotel because if you came to Charleston to waste your time laying in your room watching TV. You pick it because you want to be in the heart of downtown, next to Marion square where all the free festivities are. It is also the site of the original Citadel for you history buffs.

You also don't eat here because there are so many great restaurants in town.

Room Tip: Get out there, don't waste your day sitting in your room

Stayed here last Oct. even though it has been awhile. This might help if you are planning a fall trip to Charleston.

The weekend we were in town was Citadel College home coming weekend. And all hotel prices were inflated, many were booked several weeks in advance. Our first two hotel choices were sold out. We got one of the last available rooms at the Embrassy Suites. Which is built around the Citadel Military College, 1922 Padgett Thomas Barracks. All the rooms over look the large covered atrium, which was the barracks parade grounds. First two levels of rooms, are part of refurbished barracks. Our suite was on the first floor. A large wooden door with rustic hardware open into the two room suite. It had a sleeper sofa, small table with two chairs, a nice counter top with small sink, built in fridge and a microwave. Bathroom in between the two room suite. Bedroom was on the outside brick wall, with a high narrow window. Not much room between walls and bed, around 16 inches, no room for a night stand next to bed. No built in closets, a hi-boy chest, stood against the wall near the end of the bed, for you clothes. The suite was clean, carpet shows wear, bed was clean and comfy. We are seniors, but we do not have any mobility problems, so the room worked well for us.

Hotel is located two blocks from visitor center, great place for information on things to see and do. Also many tours leave from the visitor center. Hotel staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. Several good restaurants in the area. Due to home coming, many were booked full. However we were so tired after a full day of walking, we ended up opting for the free evening two hour reception, which more than filled our needs. Choice of drinks, chicken wings, sausages, cheese, fruit, veggies, chips and dip. Free breakfast, large buffet, we had the fresh cook to order omelets, which were very good.

The nice park, (Marion Square) which is next to the hotel, can be a very lively place. Homecoming weekend there was a festival with lots of music. Our room was on the opposite side of the hotel away from the square, we were so tired the music did not keep us awake. We enjoy staying in Historic Hotels and would differently stay here again.

Room Tip: Large people or someone who has mobility problems might need more room between the wall and bed. An...
