“The Embassy Suites Charleston Historic District is a great place to stay.”
Reviewed 13 October 2009

If you want a great place to stay in Charleston that is reasonably priced and close to everything, stay at The Embassy Suites - Historic Charleston. It is one block from the Visitor's Center and across the street from the bus stop. You can go all over Charleston from the bus stops in those two locations. It is also within walking distance of the market and many other sites. I have a bad back so the bus was important to me. The suites are just the right size, nicely decorated with comfortable furniture, beds, two TV's, refrigerator, microwave, and sink. You get a full breakfast and if you want something special done to your eggs or pancakes, they will cook it for you. They also have cereal, muffins, etc. In the afternoon, they put out cookies and also have a Manager's Reception every evening. The hotel is in the old Citadel Military College which makes it that much more interesting. The staff was pleasant and very helpful with everything we needed. The King Street shopping district is behind the hotel with many wonderful shops and restaurants. We will definitely stay there the next time we visit Charleston. It was like home to us.

I was a little bit worried about staying here based on some of the reviews. However, I really had a great stay. The free breakfast was very good, and we also took advantage of the manager's reception one night (free drinks/appetizers at night). I have to say that the bartender (mid-20s, female) was especially sweet and should be commended- she does a great job. The place was swamped because of some flag conference and people were literally falling on top of each other. After a small child fell right on top of me and knocked over my red wine onto my dress, the bartender really went out of her way to help me get it out with club soda, etc. That was appreciated.

The bedroom was great; the beds were SO comfortable. The living room of the suite was a little dated but functional and fine. The hotel itself was definitely a lot prettier than I expected. The only thing I didn't like was that it's not right in the center of the tourist areas. It was very hot outside and the walk felt too long- we ended up taking cabs two nights. I'd rather stay somewhere more in the center of things... but obviously this is something that the hotel can't help. If you don't mind a little walk, this is a great place to stay.

This hotel is very nice. I stayed there for a weekend visit with my daughter who attends school in Charleston. It was very convenient to the College of Charleston and to everything else in the Historic District.

My wife and I stayed at the Embassy Suites - Historic Charleston for four nights in October 2009. We were pleased with the quality of our room, the nightly manager's reception, the attentive staff, and the full breakfast served each morning. We were particularly pleased with the concierge, who was extremely helpful in planning activities and recommending places to dine and making reservations. He was outstanding. This hotel is located in the old Citadel, which makes it unique.

On the upside a beautiful hotel in a great location. On the downside, the hotel has cockroaches, lots of them. When informed of the problem, the staff commented that it's a problem in the Charleston area. Eventually, the waived the charge for the valet parking. If I had been advised the problem at check-in, i would have stayed someplace else and you should too. This is not what i expected from a reputable hotel chain.

We really enjoyrd our stay at the Embassy Suites - Citadel. That said, when visiting you need to remember that this is a historic property and as such isn't the cookie cutter Embassy Suites. The rooms were a bit smaller (even though we had a handicapped accessible room) and there was a bit of a "room freshener" smell all the time but that was fine with us since the ambience of thr hotel in the public areas was simply lovely. Whoever designed the lobby area really understood the finer points of Lowcountry high society - understated and elegant...
The breakfast was without a doubt the best I've ever had at an Embassy Suites ( and I stayed at another one just a week prior so I had a recent experience to compare). Eggs cooked to perfection (2 over easy) as well as really tasty potatoes and bacon and sausage all enjoyed on comfortable wrought iron chairs on an open air terrace.
It was about 10 blocks to the heart of the historic district - roughly a 7 minute walk but I was glad of it as we discovered some of the best and most interesting restaurants and bars on our walk down the "Museum Mile". The area felt really safe even after midnight - we did a late night ghost tour - but if you are an all ight partier this is not the part of town for you. It was Friday night and they pretty much rolled up the sidewalks at midnight...

Absolutely beautiful hotel until you get to the rooms. I was expecting a lot better from Embassy Suites. Our suite was ment for a meeting so there was a huge 10 person table which made the layout pretty awkward. There was nothing on the white wash walls to give the room any charm and worst of all there was only one window in the master bedroom, therefore there was no telling what time of day it was in the common area or the other bedroom (I thought that was a fire code violation). Also the suite happened to be right across from the elevators and we heard every ding. The walls were so paper thin that I could hear the cleaning crews across the hall and since the hotel is an open atrium there was no need for an alarm clock when breakfast was served you would know.

Redeeming qualities would be that the two bedroom suite had two full bathrooms as well. Breakfast was a perk and so was the happy hour. Service was good, very friendly staff they would talk with you in the elevator.

Location was a 20 min walk from the best of downtown Charleston. I've researched hotel prices a lot and there is a definite correlation between location and price so $400 a night was not a value at all. And you'd think if you were staying in one of the most expensive rooms in the hotel you would get free parking, think again, $12 a day (and the parking garage was so clearly owned by Hilton bc there was a Hampton Inn next door too). Oh the pool is tiny and more for kids than adult lounging.

You may ask, why did you stay there? It was one of few hotel in downtown Charleston with a suite that slept 6.
