This La Quinta comes in 2 parts. There is a modern bit and an old bit. The old bit is old USA style Motel, with a walk along balcony outside your front door and everyone looking in through your window. The new bit is totally different witha centarlsied corridor. Do pay for the upgrade to Marina views, it is worth it. I would advise trying to stay in the new bit too.
This is why I have rated it 3 star, I stayed in the old part. That said it was clean and comfortable with friendly helpful staff. Great budget place to base yourself for Charleston. Beware of taxi companies though, book through the front desk only, and avoid "express taxi" like the plague. Very unreliable. There is a courtesy bus that can get you downtown. Downtown is not walkable, partly due to the roads which are not pedestrian friendly. Breakfasts are unimpressive, and I ate out for breakfast.

Room Tip: Try to insist you stay in the new part, and preferably not on the ground floor. Do upgrade to Marina...

This hotel was a great value. It was quiet, had comfortable beds and was a quick trip to downtown either driving, via shuttle (for a fee) or a taxi. It was 8 dollars per person round trip for the shuttle and $7 dollar one way in a taxi. The room also had a nice TV with showtime and HD. And it had free wi fi and parking.

This hotel is located in a beautiful spot.. convenient to downtown.. beautiful view on the marina side.. On the flip side is the highway - dirty, loud and very close.
Front desk sent us to three different rooms...we had requested a non-smoking room .. the first was a smoking room on the highway side - it REEKED and .. back to the front desk- informed them it was a smoking room and could we please have a marina side room as it was quieter.. we were told no and we were sent to another room - highway side.. we opened the door..and HEY it was already occupied.. back to wait in line at the front desk again... and another key was given to us.. this time for entrance in the hotel itself.. we opened the door and surprised the occupants.. BACK to the front desk.. and were given another key... this time the room was unoccupied and it was on the marina side which we had been told several times we couldn't have. Two doors down was a yap yap dog that didn't stop barking from the time we unpacked/went out and was still barking when we came in... I stopped at the front desk and the clerk asked if we liked our room she 'gave' it to us because of all the trouble... right.. like it was a favor. I mentioned the dog and was told it would be taken care of. We came back from dinner around 9ish.. the dog was still barking...I called the front desk..who said they would take care of it... it did stop barking UNTIL the cleaning man decided to start vacumning at 10PM! I called down and asked was this normal ? Vacumning late... they said they would take care of it.. the dog continued to bark on and off - all night.... Breakfast was dismal... food was stale and cold, when fruit ran out - it wasn't replaced. This all on the first day/night.
Before we headed out for the day - I told the desk clerk again about the dog... She said I'll take 20 dollars off one night.. I told her that was nice but we wanted the dog to be quiet...
Came back and dog was barking... but someone kept yelling at it to shut up...so don't know which was worse..... Breakfast on Sunday was the same... stale donuts/not much fruit/eggs were chewy and the bagels hard....
Overpriced for what it offers - needs to have some serious staff intervention...
For someone who has worked in hotels nearly 15 years - the staff is an insult to those of us who know what 'HOSPITALITY' means.

Room Tip: Ask for the marina side.

Great location for seeing historic downtown and Patriots Point. The room we had was a marina view.....partially blocked by a tree and the window was on the edge of the room and not in the middle, a little hard to enjoy the view! Bed was too soft but pillows were decent. Nice people at check in and check out. Breakfast was mediocre. For the price of the rooms, they should have had hot eggs and not just hard boiled. Need to change the waffle mix, not much flavor except when you put the syrup on. It was a pleasant surprise to see 3 waffle irons. Most places only have 1 sometimes 2. Would stay here again but not pay the extra price for a "marina view".

I've stayed in several La Quinta's and they've all been upgraded and really nice. I can't speak for all of the rooms at this location, but #300 left a lot to be disired. The Bathroom tub was stained and dingy, the caulk around the toilet was stained yellow. The furniture was dated and knicked up from years of abuse. Also had to go to front desk to get the towels for the room.
Overall, this hotel is in a great location. It's just across the water from downtown and a quick trip out to Folly Beach, but they've got to upgrade this place for me to come back. There are too many options in the area.

Room Tip: Don't let them put you in Room 300.

First of all I requested a king room for my girlfriend and I. We were put in a double bed. Not a room with twon double beds but a room with one double bed. We were told on day two we woud be able to switch. That never happened. Second the room smelled like wet dog. I assume this was one of the pet friendly rooms. My 9 month old child did not seem to like this as her eyes continued to swell all weekend. Finally the toilet began leaking all over the bathroom floor and there were no more rooms for us. Finally we just abandoned ship and went to stay at another hotel. I was given no refund for my lost night.

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs.

We were very pleased with this hotel, the view of the marina is great and you are just a 3 minute drive from downtown Charleston. Also, California Dreaming is next door (great place to grab drinks and apps) We will stay here everytime we visit Charleston.

Room Tip: If you smoke ask to be put in the building with access to the balcony, also ask for a room with a vi...
