“Location was great - the room, not so much...”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

The staff was very friendly and attentive to our questions. The shuttle to the downtown area was great and much appreciated. It is definitely difficult to exit the hotel parking lot onto 17 so we appreciated letting someone else do it! The location was by far the best feature of this hotel. There was a lot to do close by and all kinds of restaurants to choose from. We enjoyed this aspect very much.

The downside of this hotel was the comfort level of our room. I know that Charleston is humid in August, but I was counting on having air conditioning that would help reduce that effects. In every other place we've been, the air conditioner always seemed to dry things out. We had an air conditioner that actually worked well at cooling things off, but it remained EXTREMELY humid in our room. We actually had to put our beach clothes in the car to dry because they wouldn't dry in our room. Everything we owned became slightly damp over the few days that we were staying there. It was frustrating to come back at night to put on damp clothes to sleep in. Very disappointing. I saw all the good reviews and decided to book 3 nights through Priceline. That was a mistake. I would have moved to a different hotel after that first night if we hadn't already committed for those 3 nights.

Dear TMeola,

Thank you for your feedback. We take our guest comments very seriously and always strive to provide comfortable and friendly accommodations. We appreciate your nice comment regarding our staff and shuttle service.

However, we’re sorry we fell below your expectation regrading the air conditioning. We will address this concern. I assure you the feedback of our hotel will be reviewed and most certainly forwarded to the appropriate departments. We take the confidence our guests place in us very seriously and work diligently to rectify any unsatisfactory experiences. We hope you give us a chance in the future to show you how great our hotel is.

Sincerely,

We stayed here for several nights just to get away and see Charleston. The hotel is located in between two bridges, one going toward downtown, Charleston, and the other heading away, BUT in the direction of Folly Beach. We were 10 miles to the beach and 2 miles to downtown. We could see downtown Charleston from the view from the restaurant at the hotel. Very pretty view! The first night, we arrived late, but made it in time to grab a bite at the restaurant. Host on that night was very helpful, even though we clearly were last customers. He also acted as our waiter. This was August 10th. I had the shrimp Po-Boy. It was delicious....FRESH, crisp shrimp, lightly breaded on a chewy roll with lettuce, tomato and remoulade sauce. My husband had a French Dip that he enjoyed, both for around $10. Other pricier things on the menu that looked good, but we were ready to hit the hay at that point and wanted to sample restaurants in the area. Breakfast was $10 for the buffet, which had a lot of choices. It was good, but not great, as far as the quality of the food, but the view is outstanding, and it was fun. Problem this time morning of August 12th was that the waitress seemed uninterested in us. I know we chose the buffet, but we had to ask the Host to get us ketchup. He seemed to be doing her job for her most of the time, and she just looked bored. We tipped her, but afterwards, my husband commented that he wondered what for. She dropped off a pot of coffee, and we never saw her again, until she left the bill. Even then, we waited and waited, but she never came for it. Finally, we went up to the register. Is this protocol? We were never informed. Suddenly, she arrived and looked interested in us and instructed us in where we sign to give a tip. Not impressed with this waitress at all. We should have tipped the host. Our room was very clean...not very large, but not cramped, and it was decorated nicely and we were comfortable. Comfy beds. We took advantage of the shuttle to town when going out to dinner. Our driver was Donovan both times, and he was nice and made the extra effort to drop us close to our destination and said he enjoyed talking with us. The drive to Folly Beach could not be easier. Make a left out of the hotel heading south, a quick left on Folly Beach Road and take it to Folly Beach. Make a left on bridge heading North out of hotel, and you are heading to downtown, 2 miles. Plenty of supermarkets on the way to beach for ice or whatever you need...a Starbucks also on the way to the beach on the right just after turning onto Folly Road. We paid a little over $300 for three nights, which is a bargain and felt like we were in the perfect location. We never made it to the pool or gym, but they are located on the third floor, and the pool is out doors. Would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in 802. View not great from the room, but it was quiet and very clean.

Where to start..
When checking in, it was my husband and I. The two of us, we arrived together,I was leaning on him while we were at the counter, nothing that would indicate we hated each other. The gentleman checking us was the type of southern hospitality you expect. He hands us the key to or room, directs us to the elevator and we head up. Lo and be hold when we get to the room he has given us two full size beds. No bueño. Initially we couldn't quite size the beds because the mildew/former smoking room smell knocked us out. I tried to crack the siding door and it was bolted down like Fort Knox.
We would have talked to the front desk but there were 2 wedding parties there that weekend so I'm positive we were limited in what we could do.
Access in and out of the hotel interesting, quasi kamikaze going out, easy coming in.
The nice thing that did come about with this hotel was the breakfast at the rooftop restaurant, beautiful view. I was intrigued to find out that you could see 3 boasts that had sunk in the harbor.
Unless there is a major, major overhaul of the hotel rooms, I think I'll find someplace else to sleep.

Dear Andrea G,
Thanks for choosing the Holiday Inn Riverview! When booking a guest room we highly suggest you book directly through Holidayinn.com. Most 3rd party websites: priceline, hotels.com and orbiz do not guarantee a room type which makes it problematic when checking in especially in your circumstance. With the hotel being centrally located to everything it puts us only minutes from Downtown, Folly Beach and West Ashley. With free parking and a free shuttle it allows you to spend the extra money at the shops or a spectacular tour. Thanks again for staying with us!

We stayed here for the location. Room was clean and the beds were comfortable but the bathroom did not have a fan, but that was no big deal since it just my son and I. The breakfast buffet is a little high so we only did that once. Better have a fast car to get off and on Hwy. 17(exciting).

The room was very close to beach and downtown. View from pool was great. Only issue was that they booked someone else into our room while we were staying so when we returned from dinner another persons suitcases were in our room. Quickly resolved.

We immediately noticed that the bed sheets had hair in them and discovered even more when the sheets were fully taken off. The front desk manager came right up, profusely apologized, and changed them out. While there, she did a great job telling us about some dinner options. She was nice. The pool looks nice and seems to have a bit of a view, but didn't go in. Room walls seem thin- could hear the mumbling of couple next door. Road traffic is VERY loud in room. Disappointed to see multiple teammates chatting and smoking in the garden area at front of hotel. That should be done in a more private area, but ideally- smoking would be banned on hotel premises for teammates (hotel should be encouraging good health choices). Wouldn't stay here for $200+ again. Maybe worth $100.
