We decided to go to the Riverbanks zoo because everyone that had went had told us how great it was...we were not impressed at all! We have season passes to our local nature center so to most zoos like Knoxville and Ashboro we get in for free, but we paid half price for the Riverbanks zoo compared to the other zoos that we get into for free it was nothing. Everthing was closed, there was one place to eat (near the alligator) and the food was sitting under a lamp, one of the construction guys who was working on the zoo asked if it was fresh and was told yes, we had stood at the door for about 8 mins looking at the menu with three kids and it was there when we walked in, the cheese wouldn't even melt on his burger. The five girls who were working in the restaurant were completely rude and dismissive of him and us as we were looking around. There are lots of snack stands around the zoo but ALL of them were closed the entire day. There was lots of construction and the pictures of what its going to look like look really good, we are going to try it again after all of the construction is finished next year.

Riverbanks is a fun zoo to spend a day with the family. My 4 year old loves going. The bird house is really great, and we loved the gorillas. A fun place to go to spend an afternoon!

The zoo is well laid out with spacious and natural looking animal enclosures. The animals were quite easily visible but looked relaxed and in good condition. Food and bathroom facilities were good. The only challenge was that the people mover transportation were a bit too infrequent and we had to stand in the hot sun for about 15 minutes waiting for the next tram. Also, the direction finders were scarce so it was almost impossible to simply find the way out by walking. The zoo is under renovation though so likely these issues are temporary,

We visit often with our little one, but always find something new to be excited about. From feeding the Giraff's to playing with a penguin. The Zoo can be tackled in one morning or you can make it a full day. The last time we were there they were renovating but it looked like they were almost done.
