My father spent the week of his visit at the Country Inn & Suites preferring a comfortable bed over our living room couch.
Being that the hotel had just opened in the past week, he was the first person to ever stay in the room and everything was brand spankin' new and sparkly. The room featured a big comfy bed (as he had hoped), a nice desk/work area with a credible desk chair, a nice lounge chair, a good size flat screen TV, a microwave and fridge. All the lights in the place used full spectrum energy efficient fluorescent lamps, which save the earth without that garish fluorescent-y glow. There was a user-adjustable thermostat controlling an A/C unit capable of making the room brisk even on the hottest South Carolina days.
There were also user-adjustable thermostats in the hallways. Hmmm. Not sure why.
The indoor pool was small and featured a hot tub. It, like the rest of the place was sparkly clean.
He didn't use the fitness rooms or the Internet so I cannot comment. Although the hotel was open for business, the hotel's "business center" was not. Apparently the equipment had yet to be installed. There was also a future in-hotel convenience store that was poised to open, but wasn't quite ready either.
The stay included an adequate breakfast with a choice of waffles, scrambled eggs (real, not prefab) and even the fixin's for a breakfast burrito. There was also standard stuff: cereal, juices, donuts, bagels and the like.
My dad is an old guy who sometimes acts like a really old guy. The staff was patient, accommodating and helpful. Fortunately, my dad chose this week to quit smoking as the entire hotel is "smoke-free." (He joked "It's a heck of a time for me to quit when I can smoke for free at this place." Then again, maybe he wasn't joking.)
The location was convenient to my house, but that won't matter to anyone not visiting me. More important to every else, it is located immediately off I-26, about a half mile from Harbison Blvd, home to the majority of shopping in Columbia. The hotel is about 10 minutes from the heart of downtown on a typical day, 20-30 minutes on a bad traffic day, and about an hour and a half from Williams Brice Stadium on game day (leave very early...Cocks fans love their football).
It was also an exceptional value. The rate for the week was $59.92/night, which is twenty five bucks cheaper than the other newer brand name hotels in the area. There is a Microtel across the street at $40/night, but, frankly, there's no comparison, especially at that price. The published rate is $74/night, but we asked for a better rate and got it. I encourage you to do the same.
Overall, highly recommended.
