M Grille is a stylish contemporary Asian restaurant in what appears to be a rapidly-developing area on the edge of Columbia's entertainment district, and is walkable from downtown. The decor is clean and elegant, and service is friendly and attentive without being overwhelming, though if there were features on the night we visited, we weren't informed..
The menu ranges from Chinese to Southeast Asian, and seems to be centered on Japanese-inspired dishes. We had the pork belly starter, which was flavorful if rather more like a pork chop than I tend to think of pork belly. My wife had the flounder tempura with sweet & sour sauce. This was generously portioned, perfectly cooked, and tasty. I had the the Peking duck, which was quite good and also a fair value for the price.
My only real issue with this well-run restaurant is that it just seems...uninspired. Everything is competently done, but nothing really had pizazz. I would go again, and would certainly try the proprietor's other restaurants, but a little bit of edge or an experimental take on a dish would be very welcome.
