We visited this restaurant for the first time tonight 8/31/13 based on tripadvisor reviews. We made a reservation and they had our table ready with waters and menus, which was great. The ambience... Not great. 90's interior and very bright.
We had a table of 5. My husband had the Cornish hen (highly recommended by server ) and I had the pork (also recommended ) Both dishes were over cooked and extremely salty. The noodles accompanying the Cornish hens were soupy and mushy. My pork (supposed to be mediumrare ..but well done) came with a very warm salad that was totally flavorless. i love salads/vegetables of all types .. but the warm, bland wiltedness made it inedible. 2 of our teens had the hamburger and did not complain. One had the Cesar salad with shrimp. For $18, it consisted of 5 leaves of lettuce and 4 shrimp!!
We were never asked about our meal, and, although the restaurant was about 25% full, had to ask (twice) about getting our pre dinner glass of wine. Wine pours super small (4oz.) as well
This was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in a long time. We researched the restaurants in the area and thought this was a good quality/value choice. Definitely not.

Local ingredients and fantastic atmosphere! The food was on another level than 95% of other restaurants we've been to in Cola. Newcastle braised short ribs were great and strawberry salad with goat cheese fritters was unexpected. What a treat we will absolutely be back!

Well, except this one is not only friendly and inviting, it is upscale with a menu full of delightful gastronomic delights. The chef works his magic with local food from the area. It is always fresh and flavorful. And, it is not all lah-de-dah - they have one of the best hamburgers in town. We go often and have yet to have a bad experience. The wait staff is knowledgeable and well trained. The atmosphere is inviting and, most of all, relaxing. I hesitate to write this review because Tombo is a secret I would best not want to get out. From a selfish standpoint, I hope it will stay nice, small and intimate.

I checked the ever helpful Trip Advisor ratings as we looked for a pre-op meal before becoming bionic with the great Dr. Gross and found Tombo, a huge surprise and delight in Columbia, SC. After decades of being depressed by the lack of fresh food in the south, things are a changin' for the better. The fried brussel sprouts and aoili were the best ever, we could have made that a meal, but as tapas lovers, continued to black bean hummus (superb), the arugula salad with scallops (phenomenal, well flavored and plumb) and mixed green salad adding juicy shrimp. It was a great meal, but we weren't finished! The key lime pie, though very lilliputian, had great flavor, and the giant (apparently a mistaken slice) chocolate cheesecake had a ganache topping and a mild fruity flavor. So, it was a feast layered with many flavors, fresh and tangy: a great last meal. If I don't feel too sick, will return Fri to break the fast. Thanks Tombo!
