We walked the trail to the shell mound on the first day of January-(no problems with bugs). To get to the trail, you need to go into the state park entrance across the street from the Edistonian. The trail is flat and wide, and is somewhere around 3 to 3.4 miles round-trip. The shell mound is interesting, although was not as big as we were anticipating-- apparently due to thousands of years of erosion. Our son, who is an active 4 year-old, enjoyed the hike and its opportunities for exploring. He spotted a small group if dolphins swimming near the mound, and we even saw a wild game-cock! Worth the $10 and 2 or 3 hours we spent there.
