If you like interesting food, beautifully prepared, and don't mind a total lack of ambiance, this is the place for you. A dark former Pizza Hut that looks and (sort of) feels pretty precisely like its former self, it nevertheless has the most interesting food in Greenville--and we've eaten most everywhere. I really prefer to go downtown, but Owl isn't far away from Main Street and is probably low rent, and that may explain its really quite reasonable prices. (That's in real contrast to some downtown places.) Menu changes often. You may not like (or recognize) every ingredient listed, but take a chance and go. We were impressed.

We had heard about The Owl from friends of ours who eat there regularly. We had also ridden by the restaurant and were a little put off by the plain, recycled look of the restaurant. However, when we got there, we were pleasantly surprised. The drink menu is as eclectic as you can find, full of fresh and unique flavors and blends, most of which are made in house, and many of which you have never heard. Flavor infused liquors add tremendous variety to their choices. The dinner menu is constantly changing, and we elected to order the four course meal, chef's choice. Every course was different, and offered unusual pairings that got better with each course. The plates are small, but just enough for a good taste and leaving you waiting with expectation for the next course. The dishes are plated beautifully, and the chef obviously takes great care in his presentation. We will certainly be dining there whenever we are looking for something different from the usual fare.

Outstanding food. Innovative dishes & drinks. Ugly building hiding a culinary gem. Warning: plates are small and fairly inexpensive prices so if you are hungry will wants to order more than one plate.

Pretentious is the best description. No signage- you just have to figure it out. After you figure the whole what door to use, then you have to step over a moat of water coming off their cooler. The other door was better. I asked for iced tea the waitress says "we don't do tea". Pretentious. The dinner menu was creative- but not the greatest descriptions. My gnocchi was fried. I would not have ordered that. She also corrected my pronunciation of gnocchi. Pretentious and annoying (raised by my Italian immigrant neighbor). I don't know if this is the hipster business model- make your customers feel awkward and put out- but that was about it. Out in the door in about 20 minutes- not the date night out I was hoping for.

First, what works. Food lovingly conceived, prepared and presented. Very innovative food. BUT, won't go back. What does not work? Surly, horrendous service. Any questions were answered by repeating ingredients. Could not answer the most basic questions on beers. And, acted as if he hated being there. The atmosphere in the old Pizza Hut was industrial at best. Location is in run-down, depressing part of town. Not pleasant, but not a barrier to returning. The indifferent, rude reception IS a barrier. Please fix front of house.
