If you're looking for a good way to see if you like kayaking, head to Palmetto Dunes (entrance on Rt. 278). HHI Outfitters has an office there, and you can rent a kayak. You'll have your choice of 1 hr, 1 1/2 hr. or 2 hr. kayaking on the canals that weave through the plantation. Because you're on an inland canal, there's no currents to contend with, like there is ocean kayaking. Captain Dave is very helpful getting you launched and on your return, getting you out. We felt very safe with the equipment (in good condition). The seat of your pants will get wet, but not much else. We rented a kayak for two and did the 1 hr., plenty long enough, especially in the summer months. When it gets really hot (June, July, and August, I suggest you go early in the morning; much of the way you're in the sun and it gets very hot here in the summer. Great way to enjoy the beauty of the island and see some wildlife, without too much exertion :-) Canoe and bike rentals also available.
