“Be prepared to walk a lot”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2014

Having a bike to explore this place is smart because otherwise it's a long walk to get around the entire refuge. There's not a lot to see unless you chance upon some wildlife, but it's nice that it exists.

“Great outdoor option”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2014 via mobile

This refuge is very well designed and laid out. We went to take bird photos and were not disappointed. There were numerous birds and great shots. We also saw a dozen baby alligators and a turtle. Many people were riding their mountain bikes and seemed to enjoy the paths. This is a great choice when you need a break from the beach.

“Great bike trip to White Point!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

We made it to White Point at the far end of the island! The location of the former home of Major General Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. There are some giant magnolia trees, etc and a gorgeous view off the island. Try to go at low tide for some great beach combing activities. You have to REALLY look for the sign directing you to White Point! If you make it all the way to the "closed area", you missed the sign by about 25 yards on the left (going out) or the right (backtracking). Make sure you take your bug spray! We found deer ticks after our visit.

“Nice Outing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

We loved hiking in the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. We saw many birds around a lake that we hiked to. The hike was not strenuous at all and the weather in the mid 70's was perfect. We did not find any restrooms that were available so be prepared.

“Just an OK refuge”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2014

I've been to a lot of wildlife refuges and Pinckney Island NWR is just OK compared to most. It seemed to be a lot of walking without very much to see. In fact, some of the best bird finds were when I got off the trail and looked at the water areas. I don't think I'll be hurrying back to Pinckney Island NWR the next time I'm in Hilton Head, which is too bad because it's really convenient.
