This is an exceptional property with large villas of high quality - what you expect at the higher end of the Marriott brand. The location on the beach is perfect as is being in the older Foley Field neighborhood of Hilton Head. The location is also ideal for biking anywhere on the Island easily.
The villas are spacious with flat screen TV's, an in-suite spa, and a full kitchen stocked with higher quality cooking sets and appliances than most. The majority of the villas open to a courtyard so you'll be able to see other villas across the way. Also you can see the parking garage, which is on the ground floor. This is offset by the use of trees and nice landscaping. There is both an indoor and outdoor pool, a decent exercise room, and 2 private computers with printing up to 20 pages. The free wifi throughout the resort, including in the villas, is password protected, stable, and fast. So don't sweat it if you don't score an oceanfront villa. The villas are near enough to perfect to keep you happy.
What isn't perfect is the noise, specifically leaf blowers. Unfortunately, this resort has joined the ranks of others on the Island that are obsessed with removing leaves from all pedestrian & bicycle paths by using very loud combustible engines. Is it really that hard to use a broom anymore - or let the leaves fall as Mother Nature intended? Disturbing the peace of their guests is now the approach at this and other resorts, alas.
In addition, though the resort has some of the best activities of its kind, they fill up too quickly! So, my tip is to read the activities ASAP and sign up almost immediately on check-in. Otherwise, you will be tortured and disappointed by wonderful activities that are promised, but no longer available. And for the activities on site, expect crowds and nowhere to sit.
Another tip - do rent a bike, but do so from one of the island bike rental companies (there are at least a dozen). The Barony Beach charges 2-3x what you'll pay from a local company and, if you rent locally, you won't stand out all over the Island on the Marriott's orange bikes which scream "I'm stupid as I overpaid for this bike." All the local companies will deliver directly to you via the bike racks just outside the Barony Beach's front kiosk. Finally, if you drive and the beach is warm, bring your own beach chair so you don't have to overpay for that either.
This 5 star resort drops to 4 due some noise, overbooked activities, and a "nickle and dime" attitude that conflicts with exceptional customer service. Be independent and you can turn your vacation into a 5 star experience all on your own!
