“Great Relaxing Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2013

This has been another great visit to Marriott's Grande Ocean Resort. Two couples in a two bedroom condo that had everything you could need. The pools are great as are the hot tubs. Our condo was top floor over top of Jim's Bar facing the ocean and it was beautiful especially in the morning when the sun came up. Everything was clean that we came in contact with and the staff there are all very friendly and helpful. We rented bikes for the entire week and rode them every day all around the island, sometimes on the bike path and sometimes on the ocean. We ate out all of our meals and had great food every meal.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better ocean view.

It was just the 2 of us in the 2 bdrm condo. We were disappointed that we were giving a second floor room which overlooked the 'nature pool'. We are owners in St. Thomas and had traded the week, but the speech that we received was that the higher floors were for the resort owners. The condo had everything that you need to cook breakfast everyday - we mostly ate dinner out, but there are grills available for a nice steak dinner. Another odd thing is that the resort does not have chairs and umbrellas for guests. We knew this ahead of time, and brought our own - but it is something that visitors should know ahead of time. The pools are nice - people do reserve them even though there are signs advising not to. We went to Pool Bar Jims - not really impressed with the frozen drinks, but the mojitos were very good - although pricey.

We rented bikes from the resort - went out to the lighthouse, and down to Coligny. Some of the restaurants we ate at - Vine, Eat!, Lowcountry Backyard, Skull Creek Boathouse, and One Hot Mama's. Highlights were the shrimp and grits at Lowcountry Backyard, and fried chicken from One Hot Mama's - although none of the meals we ate could be considered bad. The concierge who contacted us prior to arrival got us reservations at Eat and Skull Creek.

The jelly fish were out the week we were there - mid August - the lifeguards had warning flags out, and had vinegar spray bottles. Both of us were stung on the first day, but they got better as the week went on. The location on the beach is nice - although there is public access to the beach - there is not as much parking available as at Coligny, so it is not as crowded.

All in all a relaxing vacation - we won't return - the drive from PA was a little overwhelming, and unless airfares come down - it's too pricey with factoring a rental car, and renting beach equipment as well just doesn't make sense.

We love this place. This is our second year and we already made our accommodations to come back next year. We are vacation club owners and enjoy staying at the Vacation Club properties.

As a single couple with no children, we love staying here during the off season. We aren't party animals and enjoy the quiet. The other residents are either grandparents or couples with small children. There haven't been any loud parties or crazy things going on at this hotel either year we've stayed.

The hotel is on the beach and if you get an ocean view room, the views are amazing. Lots of pools and hot tubs. We don't get into the events or activities but they do offer several throughout the week.

The front desk left a basket with wine and cheese for us in our hotel room because it is our anniversary.

My only complaint is there aren't any gluten free or allergen friendly snacks in the Marketplace. This is true for all the Marriott locations. They just aren't allergen friendly but we are aware of it and plan for that during our stay.

Wifi is spotty and so is cell service but I don't really mind when I'm listening to the ocean in the background of the balcony.

Room Tip: Ocean view is just as good as ocean front.

We stayed 9/1-9/8 in an Ocean Front villa. My first criticism was noticed the second I walked into the villa, and that is that Marriott designates a villa that is not directly facing the ocean as "ocean front." There were definitely units that faced the ocean, but mine (8555) was the 2nd villa back and the primary view from my bed was of the building next door. Minor disappointment.

Anyway, this is an older resort, but it was clean and very spacious, much more spacious than most villas I've been in. The decor definitely needs updating, but aside from cosmetic updates, the villas are very functional and very nicely sized for up to 6 people.

The master bedroom and bath took up the entire length of the villa, and there was no wall between the bathroom and bedroom. The enormous soaking tub and double vanity were completely open to the bedroom. The toilet and shower were separated via a door, but the shower had glass block in it which was visible from the bedroom. This worked fine for us, because I was traveling with my spouse, but this could be a very awkward arrangement if you are considering a stay with someone other than your spouse -- for instance, a girls' or multi-generational vacation.

There was tons of storage for clothes, including a big dresser and nice sized closet. There was also a nice HDTV in the bedroom. The shower was fine, and I appreciated having a shelf to put my foot on when I shaved.

Our master bed was very comfortable. The bedding needs replaced. Our duvet cover was ripped, and the comforter kept coming out. Also, a majority of the pillows were very hard and only functioned as decoration. Only a few small pillows were soft enough to actually function as pillows. If you're used to king-sized pillows, you might want to bring them from home.

The 2nd bedroom had two beds in it, and an attached bathroom. Very spacious. The only downside was that the bedroom window faced the common hallway. I don't know if I'd have put in that window at all, given it looked out into a lit hallway.

There was a full working kitchen, including cooktop, microwave, oven, dishwasher and full refrigerator. They also have plenty of grills on site. I loved having the option of cooking in or eating out. Bring your own food or shop at one of the nearby grocery stores. Once again, it was in need of a little cosmetic lift. There were cracked tiles in the kitchen, and the cabinet trim was missing so there was a large gap between the cabinets and ceiling.

The glass table sat 6. There were also 3 bar stools for the counter in the kitchen, so plenty of space for a crowd to eat and gather.

The living room couch was a fold-out couch, and pretty stiff and unwelcoming for use as a couch. Didn't take out the bed, so I can't comment on how comfortable it was. The TV was very nicely sized and we spent too many hours enjoying the US Open this past week.

The lanai had room for a table with 4 chairs. It was covered, which was great for escaping the sun and rain. We enjoyed watching a very impressive thunderstorm from our 5th floor lanai.

I really liked having an en-suite washer and dryer. Having a laundry makes it so convenient to do laundry that you can really cut down on what you bring. We brought a half dozen Tide pods and dryer sheets, and made good use of the laundry all week. Since housekeeping wasn't included, we washed a load of towels mid week.

The grounds were nice, with lots of pools and tons of beach chairs, but once again, they need a little TLC. For instance, the outdoor shower coming from the beach was broken; only the feet washing part worked. Bummer coming off the beach and not being able to shower off the sand and salt. The ladder coming out of the deeper end of the south pool had caution tape on it, and was not repaired in the entire week we stayed.

I loved the layout of the pools. They were designed with both the pool and beach in mind. For instance, they position chairs both facing the pool and the beach. There was a nice selection of shaded and sunny seating. I never had to jockey for a lounge chair, but this was the week of Labor Day so much of the crowd cleared out the day after we arrived. With the breeze coming off the ocean, it was very pleasant around the pool even on the hottest day.

We visited the Marketplace once. The pizza and panini were both very good. The exercise room was small, but seemed well equipped. Tennis courts were clay, and nice. We played in the Saturday round robin, which was a nice way to meet people and get a little exercise. The pro was very nice and helpful. Unfortunately, the weather was too hot to play tennis most of the day, but I really appreciate having the ability to play tennis on site.

The resort is ideally located on a great stretch of beach. We enjoyed morning walks every day. The beach here is great for walking. It's like cushioned concrete, so walking on bare feet or in shoes is very easy.

We loved having the convenience of an on-site bike rental. Bike rentals were $30/week or $10/day. We biked into Sea Pines (free Sea Pines path with rental) or down South Forest Beach drive every day. Part of the reason we love HHI is the beautiful bike paths. They are all flat and mostly shaded. I'll definitely miss biking.

We didn't attend any of the planned activities other than the tennis round robin, but I appreciate the effort Marriott makes to get people together. I also appreciated that I wasn't hounded to attend a timeshare presentation. The front desk mentioned something upon check-in and that was it.

The staff was all very nice and friendly, including the housekeeping and maintenance staff. No issues at all with service.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Marriott Grand Ocean. Aside from cosmetic issues, there are a lot of good reasons to stay there. It's ideally situated right on the beach, and the villas are a great step-up from a regular hotel room.

The Marriott condos are a great option for families. There is plenty of space. Several pools to choose from and a short walk to the beach. My only complaint is that the wifi was weak when it worked at all. I also would have appreciated some kind of warning that late summer months could mean a high jellyfish population. We only learned this after my 8 year old son was stung repeatedly on his legs in less than waist deep water! I will give credit to their attentive staff, who after requesting help from the font desk , had their lost prevention employee escort me back to my son waiting at the pool. Jeremy was outstanding and helped calm down a very shaken up mom. He applied shaving cream and vinegar and gave us helpful information. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed this hotel. I do think it is one of the top resorts to choose from.

Room Tip: Loved Sandpiper building on Lagoon side. Beautiful and quiet.

Fantastic hotel right on the beach. Concierge was super helpful secured bike rentals, golf tee times and dining advice so our first time there was superb. Weather during October was perfect, sunny and warm.

Room Tip: Oceanfront worth it

This is obviously an older but very well kept resort in Hilton Head. The location is great. A short walk to the beach a not far from some very good restaurants. Several very nice pools and a lagoon. The beds are great. The rooms are clean. They do a good job of keeping the property updated. If you want an ocean view you have to be on the 5th floor. We would come back for sure.
