This hidden jewel offered many things, such as a butterfly garden, carnivorous plants, hiking trails, and wildlife viewing. This place is a must see. It entertained an adult and three teens for a few hours.

We arrived early in day and stayed past lunch. The Museum's mission is to teach the public about the natural history and cultural heritage of the region. The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn opened to the public less than 10 years ago. This 68 acre historic property has a history dating back 300 years and is described as the last significant parcel of open space on Hilton Head Island. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. We were impressed by the quality and quantity of the information and artifacts representing the history and legacy of the former African slave families (Gullah) who populated the island during the Civil War. The Museum documents the development of the island over time as it was converted to the resort community that is today. We enjoyed exploring the grounds and marshlands. The museum and it's well-maintained grounds make learning about the "Lowcountry" exciting, relaxing, and fun for the whole family.

I send everyone I know to the Coastal Discovery Museum. Over the years we have experiences so many of the talks, walks and animal meet and greets and have enjoyed every single one of them. This year we took a 3 hour cruise on the Tammy Jane a working shrimp boat and got to be shrimpers for a morning. The haul included three pounds of shrimp along with jelly fish, sharks, string rays, ribbon fish and all sorts of sea critters. Sea gulls and dolphins followed us on our trip waiting for the leftovers we threw back to the sea. Great adventure for adults and children alike.

The Coastal Discovery Museum is all about Coastal Carolina with something for everyone. There is a great history display covering the coastal area, an art display area for local artisans, marsh walks with interactive displays, a fascinating butterfly enclosure (yes I said fascinating because depending on timing you can watch a butterfly hatch), live animal interactions (check the timing, but we held and had photo ops with alligators and snakes), plant exhibits, live horses and more. They are involved with the sea turtle hatchery on the island so you can sponsor a nest. They have a great outdoor pavilion for weddings and gatherings. There is a little bit of everything coastal Carolina here so add it to your "must visit" stops and dig around a bit.

We went on a Wednesday and got to hold the critters. We all held a snake and an alligator. It was an amazing experience for our children. My wife was also excited to hold them. The rest of the property is also a great learning experience about the area.
