“My parents winter here every year”
Reviewed 26 December 2012

I read most of the reviews already written here, and thought I would add my 2 cents for people who are looking for a longterm rental location on Hilton Head.

For the past 5 years, my retired parents have stayed at the Villamare Villas from December until March, and they love it. As a retired couple, this place has all the amenities for renting and none of the hassle of owning. The winter is the "off season", so prices are very reasonable. They are able to rent a third floor two bedroom oceanfront condo for less then $2000 a month, which is an excellent price for the location.

The Villamare is the only non-hotel resort on the island that has an indoor, heated pool. If you have grandchildren who like to swim, this is important. There is always an attendent on staff in the pool area, but here is a secret - her main duty is to keep out gatecrashers. You heard that right. So many people have tried to sneak into the heated indoor pool, they have to post an attendent to keep them out! And yes, the older residents of Villamare can be grumpy about "their" pool. There are organized pool exercises that are pre-scheduled; if you pay attention to the schedule, you can just avoid the pool during those few hours and then no one will give you a sour face.

For retired folks, there are organized "Ladies luncheons" where they go out in the community and sample different restaurants, as well as a variety of social events. The resort is within walking distance of several large, 5 star hotels so if you want a drink at a nice bar, or want to enjoy a fire pit or a good restaurant, it is all within walking distance. Alexander's restaurant is within walking distance, and they have she-crab soup and martinis to die for.

They are bicycles to rent for $25 a month, plus walking trails and the grounds are well kept.

One thing about Villamare is that the condos are privately owned, but use rental agencies to organize rentals. 13-week rentals are given priority above all others, and every single condo is available to view online. Some owners keep their condos in better shape then others, so it pays to do a little legwork to see which one suits your needs. Being an island, moisture and mold can be a problem, so look for condos that have dehumidifiers and maintain their heating/cooling vent systems in good condition.

All in all, my parents love this place and keep returning every year. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: There are tall trees that can block your ocean view, so if a view of the water is important to you m...

This is a beautiful, well-maintained property. Literally, right on the beach, with great views, beautiful grounds and very roomy condos. It is also in Palmetto Dunes, considered to be among the best communities on the Island. Try Barnacle Bills fish market for the freshest fresh catch you've ever had. Get there before 3 and wait in line if you have to--it's worth it. We will be back to Villamare!

Room Tip: Select Building 1 or 3, preferably floors 3-5.

Our first time at Villamare. We stayed on the 5th floor of this condo, had coverered parking, a big security presence. It is a beautiful landscaped resort, the drive into the resort has beautiful Old Oaks with Spanish Moss & a little country store for necesseties. Its not overpriced either. It also has Alexander's Restaurant that we didnt have time to visit but was busy all the time. Bike rentals also. Did not do this, it was too hot to bike. We had a wonderful view of the Ocean & pools. The families were middle class Americans with no riff raff, no partying & no loud music. Short walk to the Ocean, less than two minutes. Beach sandy & Ocean clean, no "stuff" floating in it, no fireworks, no wave runners,no tacky beach stores the odd sail boat only. We saw dolphins every day & the water was so warm with a sand bar that kept the water to your knees/waist. Very safe. The Condo was lovely & had two balconies facing the Ocean, total privacy if two familys are sharing a vacation. We really enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Top floor, Ocean front!

My first year here was in July 2006, and I've been coming since. After looking at all the bad reviews, many have been fixed. In 2009 (I think) the elevators were all replaced with much faster ones, because the old ones were so slow! I would rent through Beach Properties of Hilton Head. All units are renovated very often and kept in great shape. We had an issue with the Internet a few years ago and they told us if they couldn't fix it over the phone, they'd send someone from beach properties over to come look at it, for free. The pool does get busy, but this certainly is not a hotel, and did you come here for the ocean or pool? After 8pm and when the pool opens it is really quiet. If you want to swim laps in the morning you easily can, the pool is marked with lanes on the bottom. It is such a safe area here, first complex after the gate. You cannot get in without a gate pass you are given by the rental group. I 1000% suggest coming to villamare!

First - the units at Villamare differ wildly in quality. Our extended family had two units this week -- one could have been a 3 or 4 star hotel room, the other a Motel 6. The Motel 6 room had cheap furniture, a very outdated kitchen, old and stained carpet, molding that was broken, a broken shelf, a torn clothes dryer vent that spewed lint into the unit for the first two days, a broken kitchen faucet, and no kitchen sink drain stopper (hard to wash dishes). I waited half a day for someone to come help with the room's wireless Internet connection (which could have been easily solved by a sheet of paper at check-in with the network's name and password; instead it took three phone calls, a site visit, and three more calls by the condo rental's staff to resolve). It desperately needs a remodel. If you go, make sure you see the exact unit you'll be renting. By contrast, the other unit had a modern kitchen, nice tile, nice furnishings, modern television/entertainment devices, etc.
And, on our last two days, the children's pool and the hot tub were closed by the South Carolina Health Department!
Buyer beware!

This is our third year on Hilton Head and our third year at the Villamare and we love them both. The other reviews are correct about the rooms, I rented the same one another reviewer did from Seltzer a year ago and had the same problems... Utility cancellation notices, lost deposit, crappy room with great view. This year top floor, building 1, oceanfront ....Outstanding wall to wall! Great beach, frequent dolphin sightings, friendly people, good pool especially for kids, good location, good place to grill. Just be choosey and research your unit in depth and you'll have a great experience!

My husband and I along with college friends visited Hilton Head for the first time this past week. We rented a two bedroom condo on the fifth floor of the Villa Mare section. We rented through the the Vacation Company. The two bedrooms and baths were a good size and on opposites of the apartment. The kitchen was very well stocked with dishes/cutlery, etc. We had two balconies coming from each bedroom. The balconies were perfect for watching the water, people and birds building nests. The condo had a kitchen bar and table in a dining area. It also included a sleep sofa. The decor had been updated nicely. The price was very good and lower than some units or hotel condos that we have rented. There were enough chairs by the pool and some shade. The only complaint that I would register is the number of unsupervised and underage children, including toddlers in floaters, who were always present in the hot tub and using toys, boogie boards and noodles in the water despite the signs stating no one under 12 could use the hot tub. The security staff did come around after several days and promised to patrol more often. The grounds were continually being manicured and cleaned. There were lovely flowers in bloom all around Palmetto Dunes. We did not use bikes or play golf. Charcoal grills were available, but the wind made it difficult some nights for those who grilled. Palmetto Dunes was centrally located to the sites and shopping we participated in while there.

Room Tip: The rooms and balconies in our apartment on the 5th floor offered some wonderful ocean views and eas...
