“If you are looking for a secret romantic or (almost) private beach...”

This is the place... I almost hate to give it a 5 star excellent rating. We went to this beach per the recommendation of the activity director from our resort, as place to go look for shells. Considering there are NO shells on the main beach, there are a few on this one. We were able to find enough to give my husband and 3 year old daughter a good fill for their little buckets. While we were there, granted it was 6pmish on a Wed or Thurs, we saw only a few other people. We had fun in the waves and played in the water. We didn't realize we were sitting almost on top of a turtle egg nest, another couple told us, so we moved. It was a nice place to visit for an hour or so after dinner. There are bathrooms but I don't think any food. There are some benches by the parking lot and a foot rinse shower. Off the path and worth it.

“The road less travelled...”

We really enjoyed this peaceful place. Wonderful views of the marsh and distant ocean. The path to the beach is nice, but not your typical beach. Little fiddler crabs, hermit crabs and beautiful birds well outnumber the people. Not really a swim able beach, but the beach combing is very interesting for youngsters. Once we found it, we've been back twice!

“Shhhhhh...don't tell anybody”

There aren't a lot of places off the beaten path in Hilton Head, but this is one of the best. Not a lot of people, incredible sunrises, lots of creatures in their habitat. I loved this place, it is peaceful and quiet. I hope they keep it the way it is....

“Good to get off the beaten path”

At this point, Mitchelville Freedom Park is mainly a gazebo out on a pier that overlooks salt marshes, and walking trails down to the beach at Port Royal Sound. You will get a small slice of the history of African Americans in Hilton Head. It is worth trying to find this place if you want to get away from the touristy and highly developed areas of the rest of Hilton Head. It took me 30 minutes and asking some local residents, to find the place. Mitchelville Freedom Park is contiguous with Fish Haul Creek Park, which is where the walking trails are. The salt marshes and maritime forest give you a sense of what Hilton Head looked like before all of the development took place. The live oak arching their branches over head creates a cool and calm canopy.

There are clean restrooms near the parking area but no food or other facilities. Bring your own lunch and you can enjoy a picnic down at the beach or on the gazebo that overlooks the salt marshes. If you come at low tide, you will see the tiny crabs moving about on the marshy bog.

“Just a few signs”

While there's not much going on here at the moment, we were still glad we made the short journey. It adds to the historical perspective of Hilton Head. I'll be anxious to see how much progress is made towards recreating Mitchelville. I'd sure come back to look.
