“The perfect Island vacation!”
Reviewed 17 November 2010

We have owned week 41 at Spinnaker at Shipyard about 10 years and have taken one of our vacations there each and every year. Each year the facility and the amenities are better and if there should be a problem, it is handled pronto. A pleasant 10/15 minute walk to the beach and after reaching the beach, about 1.5 miles to Caligney Square, one of my favorite spots in Hilton Head. It is truly my week of total relaxation!

Spacious 2-bedroom, 2-bath condo unit backing up to golf course and pond with wildlife. The newly renovated unit had flat screen TV and everything our family of 5 needed for the week. Nice pool and daily activities for kids plus close to beach access. 2 bikes provided with unit and complimentary golf greens for up to 4 rounds per day! We'll be going back to Spinnaker at Shipyard every year!

We stayed in Spinnaker at Shipyard, and found a great last minute deal for the week of Easter. We picked Hilton Head Island because it's a great place to play tennis, and we were not disappointed. We found our room on VRBO, and it was a timeshare rental. The rate included two bikes, and one hour of free court time at the Van Der Meer tennis facility, located just a quick bike ride down the street. The Shipyard is a large resort-type complex, with many different conda/villa complexes. I was pleasantly surprised that each condo facility has its own tennis court and swimming pool. The tennis courts at the condo are first-come, but are free. We never had to wait for a court, as it appears that most people come for golf. Bicycles are the primary mode of transportation while in the resort, and there a plenty of bike paths for this purpose. We were disappointed to learn that the Van Der Meer facility closes at 7 pm...too early by my standards, and the condo courts are not lighted. Check in was simple, but heed the warning that most rooms are not available until 5 pm on check in day. And, don't try to check in after dark...it would be difficult to find our villa after dark. The condo was spacious, and very quiet. Even though our villa was the closest to the pool, we never heard the squeeling children (they were squeeling because the pool is not heated). The bedrooms were spacious, and the kitchen was very large. We will definately return...we had a great time.

We own in Branson, Mo but enjoying trading at other locations. I would have to agree, go before dark and check in which was simple and very easy. Staff is very friendly and although we did go to a briefing on timeshares..they were NOT pushy at all. Excepted our decline on the offer. CLEAN and spacious. Lots of stairs.

Had a brilliant week at Southwinds Spinnaker Resort. Stayed in a 3 bedroom 3 bathroom house backing onto a pond. Lots of fish, turtles and a couple of 4 ft alligators in the pond for company. We were 20 mtrs from the lovely warm clean pool and hot tub area. This also had 2 gas barbeques which we made use of. The House was really nice, large, clean and user friendly. Shipyard is a gated community situated within a large wooded area. All the homes and areas are lovely. There is a 27 hole golf course on site which is really nice although not challenging. The Van De Meer tennis centre also. Played tennis also on good well maintained courts. The bicycles provided are useful as there are lots of riding paths in the area and also down to the beach. The beach is very lovely. Clean white sand, warm water , beach patrol and provided chairs and shades ($15 per day). The smokehouse is a good restaurant for ribs. A must is the south beach Salty Dog cafe and Wreak of the slaty dog restaurant. Take a kayak out for couple of hours from Shelter cove or a Dolphin boat tour. Honey Horn Plantation is a nice afternoon out. Sea Pines Plantation is a lovely area also as is Harbour Town. Go up the lighthouse for $6 to see the area. Go to Savannah for a least a day trip, although you wont see it all in one day. It is a really interesting city. Take a Trolley bus tour and hop on and off at your leisure... The architecture is wonderful as is some of the food one River Street.

We stayed at Spinnaker Shipyard from May 16-23 through an RCI Exchange. Let me add, I dont think we could have had worse weather. It rained or was cloudy/overcast 75% of our stay. Our townhouse had 2 BR's, 2.5 Baths, and was roomy/fully furnished. We were really impressed with the size of the townhouse! I think they are 1200 some odd square feet. The townhome overlooked a large lagoon that had alligators, turtles, fish, etc. We used the outdoor pool/hot tub on only 2 occasions, and the beach only for a day. To note, Shipyard Beach Club is about a 10 minute bike ride from Spinnaker, or about a 2-3 minute drive. We didnt golf because RCI Exchanges dont come with free golf; just free bikes for the week. Most golf on HHI will run you $60-80 for 18 holes, and I am not sure that includes a cart. My wife and I went to the Beaufort Airshow, Savannah, GA , Tybee Island, GA, and Parris Island. I would highly suggest taking the 45 minute drive to Savannah. Walking up and down River Street was a cool experience. Savannah does have some history, but we arent exactly history buffs. We also rode our bikes on several occasions. HHI is full of people on bikes because it is quite the experience. We even rode on the beach down around South Forest Beach. We had wonderful dinners at The Smokehouse, San Miguel's, and the Sea Shack. We shopped at Bi-Lo prior to checking in, so we normally ate breakast and lunch at the townhouse. We also cooked dinner a few nights when we didnt feel like doing the restaurant thing. Obviously you can save A LOT of money if you buy food and eat in the majority of the time. Overall the trip was great, but we had a few issues that came up. One, RMC Guest Services were very persistent about getting us on a timeshare presentation/sales pitch. I believe they called 5 times, and that was after us telling them not to call back after the 2nd time. Two, we had some issues with insects in the townhome. It says they come once a month, but the latest visit happened in March 2009. Three, the wireless internet was difficult to use because it would kick you off and prompt to enter the assigned password. The connection just wasnt that great. We do plan on returning in the future, with the hopes of better weather to enjoy!

First of all read nakd's review above. There is confusion about the name. We stayed in Spinnaker at Shipyard.
Beautiful 2-bedroom, 2 floor townhouse. Both bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms. Full kitchen with everything you need to eat in. Full size washer and dryer in unit. Half bath on ground floor. TV w/ DVD.
Now for you golfers. Free green fees on 4 great courses for 4 people a day. Can you say foursome? You have to pay $32 each a round for carts, which I thought was a little steep, but even so you save a ton of money. What we saved on golf paid for the vacation.
Maid service is extra so travel with your neatest golf buddies. I
only scratched the surface of amenites. Frankly besides eating, playing golf and sleeping we didn't do much else.
Of all the RCI exchanges I have made this is by far the nicest place I have stayed. I have no idea how this is only a Silver Star resort. Read some of my other reviews on alleged Gold Star resorts. Sometimes I think they just throw darts at a board.

  • Liked — More than a vacation unit. You could live in this unit year round.
  • Disliked — No daily maid service.
