“Another great Marriott stay”
Reviewed 11 June 2012

This resort is extremely family friendly. 3 pools. One is oceanside, with a quality bar/grille next to it. I enjoyed the fitness center, too.

We stayed in a 2 BR/2 BA oceanside villa from 6/7/2012 - 6/10/2012. Our villa was beautiful with the balcony overlooking the family pool/wetlands and ocean. It was impeccably clean with all the comforts of home. The staff could not be more accommodating. The beds and pillows were more comfortable than my own. The beach was a 2 minute walk down a boardwalk over the marsh where you can see herons and crabs. Or you can take a golf cart shuttle anywhere. They run constantly throughout the day. Great for families with kids. The Sea Salt Restaurant serves good luncheon type food. There are no oceanfront rooms as non of the buildings are directly on the beach. If you are not in building 55 or higher you will not have an ocean view. If you are not on the 3rd floor or higher you will not see the ocean either. If you want a relaxing family stay, then you can't go wrong. If you are looking for a lot of action and nightly entertainment, then this is not the place for you.

Room Tip: If you are not in building 55 or higher you will not have an ocean view. If you are not on the 3rd...

We spent Memorial Day week at the Surfwatch. It was our second time staying there. We are owners at the Grande Vista in Orlando but trade in to Hilton Head all of the time. I want to start out with a positive note by saying that Sufwatch is beautiful. The grounds are immaculate and the units were gorgeous. This time we stayed in a 3 bedroom with a pond view which is the one of the two buildings furthest from the beach. Surfwatch has 5 (5 story) buidlings, with all of the corner units on each floor being three bedrooms. The building closest to the beach is reserved for owners who actually bought into that building. The next closest to the beach are the two buildings that overlook the main pool. We stayed in one of those buildings the last time we stayed at Surfwatch and although the walk was still a distance (you have to take a bridge over protected wetlands before reaching the beach), we never seemed to mind it. This time however, our unit (which still wasn't the FURTHEST unit from the beach), was a HIKE! You can call the front desk and request a golf cart and they will take you over, but most of time (especially during the late morning when everyone wants to go to the beach), you have to wait. It is just a major pain especially when you have to load and unload a lot of "stuff" (like a cooler and chairs). Although the units were recently remodeled (Marriott does this every five years and this resort is about 5 years old), and were absolutely beautiful, my family still prefers to stay at the Grande Ocean (we have stayed there 3 times). It is MUCH CLOSER to the beach and if the kids get bored riding the waves, it is a quick walk back to the pools so you can switch back and forth all day if you want to. My children are ages 8 and 11 and get bored quickly. The one good thing about Surfwatch is that it is close to an inlet that is on the beach where the kids can look for all kinds of sea life (you are not allowed to remove them), but that is quite a walk down the beach and even after an hour or so there, they still looking for something else to do. I also have noticed that most of the families that stay at Surfwatch are extended (meaning that there are a lot of Grandparents that come with their children and grandchildren), so I find that the majority of the resort is either very young children or older Grandparents. Surfwatch is also one of the only Marriott timeshares in Hilton Head that has 3 bedrooms, which is why I think extended families are drawn to it. My husband and I have elderly parents who aren't able to travel with us, so we have to keep the kids entertained ourselves. For that reason we definitely prefer the Grande Ocean. You will see a LOT more tweens and teens at the Grande Ocean and I think that the main reason for that is that parents feel safe enough to let them roam the property without having to worry since it is so much more compact in the way it is set up. In reality, Grande Ocean is a larger property than Surfwatch, but the set up is completely different. Sufwatch does have an ocean side pool, but it is VERY small and VERY crowded. When we were there, the majority of the pool was taken up with very young children and their rafts. One child had one of those spinning rafts that was about 3 times their size. For the small size of the pool, I don't think large rafts should be permitted, especially when the hotel is at 100% occupancy and there are only 2 small outdoor pools. Grande Ocean has 3 much larger outdoor pools, one outdoor lap pool, and an indoor pool as well so you NEVER feel like you are being crowded like you do at both outdoor pools at Surfwatch. Also at Surfwatch , I would never trust my 8 and 11 year old to go from the beach to any of the pools (let alone our unit) alone. It is just too far of a walk and although the property is safe, you just worry. The one other thing we didn't like about Surfwatch is the area it is in. You are directly off of a main highway so if you want to go biking anywhere, you have to ride the paths on the MAIN highway. Grande Ocean is on (what we think) a much nicer side of the island. It is very close to Sea Pines so you can ride your bikes in and out without having to pay any fee (as you do with a car). We also feel that there is a lot more "happening" where Grande Ocean is located vs. Sufwatch which is so much quieter. My husband and I used to like the quiet when our kids were younger, but as they get older, you want to be around the action. So bottom line is that if you are a family who is extended and your parents can come along to watch your young children, and no one minds the long walk to the beach, then this is the place for you. If you have teens or pre teens, then I DEFINITELY recommend the Grande Ocean. It is just a lot more compact than Surfwatch with a lot more to do to entertain children who are beyond the toddler stage.

It took my breath away when we pulled onto the property. It was well kept and the staff was excellent attention to details from picking us up to drive us to the beach with our coolers and beach toys to providing fascinating activites such as a nature talk with a visit to the beach.
The rooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable. I found that the washer and dryer was a plus that I did not expect!
It was a great time with visits to the Harbor Lighthouse as well as several restaurants on the island.
We took a day trip to Savannah GA which is very close.

Marriott Surfwatch is a wonderful place. Its in a park like setting, but also by the beach.it has a nice tiki bar and pool w/cabanas just off the beach, which has entertainment daily. There is another outside pool and also an indoor pool.We had a 3 bedroom which was very spacious. The Staff was very helpful with everything, from amenities to reservations for tours and attractions. The grounds and buildings are very well kept.

Just returned from our third week at this resort! Our 3 bedroom villa was beautiful and looked like it was newly remodeled even though the resort is only about 5 years old. We love the location on the beach! It is not as crowded as other areas on Hilton Head, and you have the feel of staying in a nature preserve. If you want to walk to restaurants & night life do not stay here. If you want to get away from it all - this is the place!

Room Tip: Ask for building 5500 or 5600. The views of the marsh and the ocean are beautiful!

Surfwatch is a great place for family and friends to convene for a week or so.

The resort has a lot to offer its guests. One of my favorite elements of the resort is its activities area, especially its shuffleboard and ping-pong area. The whirlpool and indoor pool house is very nice, too. The property boasts three pools spread out over the course of the resort, and each of them offer different views/experiences. In addition, each day there are a bunch of planned activities that you can take part in, such as tie-dying shirts, playing bingo, or watching movies. There are also hammocks and swings located on the property--a great place to kick back and read a book.

The resort is not *on* the beach, but close to it. The boardwalk to the beach is very pretty. We saw egrets and crabs on our walk. The beach adjacent to the resort is nice and clean, and it's not very crowded if you visit at the end of May. (A big plus, in my opinion.) The resort also will set up beach chairs and umbrellas for you.

The villas, themselves, inside also offer plenty of space to cook and hang out with one's family or friends. The villas are decorated nicely, and the patios are spacious. My husband and I stayed recently with his family in a three-bedroom villa overlooking the duck pond on the far side of/entrance to the property. The pond is tranquil, but far from the beach. That is OK, though, for you get to see a lot of other cool natural phenomena if you stay on this side of the resort. We watched a blue heron stretch its legs every day, for instance. At night we listened to the frogs sing. We even spotted a turtle playing in the pond.

I recommend this resort, and I recommend visiting in May.

Room Tip: If you have the option, request a villa that is located in the area you prefer. We didn't choose...
