“As close to the beach as you can get!”
Reviewed 14 May 2014 via mobile

We stayed at Port O Call building G, unit 201. It was just wonderful. Although it was advertised as ocean view, the views of the ocean from the porch, bedroom and living room were spectacular. The unit was very nicely decorated and very clean and comfortable. My only complaint is that the kitchen is very small and to make things worse, the refrigerator sticks out so far that two people cannot be in the kitchen at the same time. Possibly they could get a flush mount refrigerator. But, there were very few times that we were both fighting for the kitchen at the same time. It was all about the beach! We rented chairs thru the Wild Dunes company and I'd recommend that. It was so nice to be able to just walk out to our chairs every morning and pick up and leave without hauling it all with us. Our unit actually had room for 2 adults and 2 or 3 children. There was a bed in the foyer and a pull out sleeper in the living room. Besides the tiny kitchen, I have absolutely no other complaints. It was wonderful.

Location is wonderful. A few steps and you are on the beach. Our unit had maintenance issues (torn door screen on screened porch and gaps around all screens .....if it were bug season we would have been miserable); slow drains; shower fixture felt like it would come apart with much more use. This is a 3-story wood structure which is old. Each unit is owned individually. Had issues getting an internet connection, but Wild Dunes management (we did rent the condo through them although other units are handled by other firms) was helpful and luckily they were able to get us fixed up. As someone else mentioned, they should advertise these as shabby chic.....no way as deluxe! That said, the condo was very spacious for two people; very clean; new kitchen appliances and updated countertops in both the kitchen and bath. Very small bathroom, but OK if only two are staying at the condo. Very comfortable bed--king. Immaculate grounds. Wild Dunes Resort is just beautiful overall. I'd ask questions if you want to have a unit where you can hear the ocean....is there any window that opens that has a screen in good repair? or a sliding door with a intact screen? We couldn't leave anything open unless we wanted to have bugs sharing our unit. The positives outweigh the negatives and we would stay there again.

Pros: Very close to ocean, great views from top deck, clean overall, grounds in excellent condition. Kitchen and bathroom were clean and, apparently, renovated. Very quiet (October).

Cons: HUGE SAFETY PROBLEM; Door locks require a code. I learned that management only changes the code once or twice a year, so anyone who has stayed there before, or their friends, can enter and possibly harm you or take your property. Frankly, I'm amazed Island Realty would rent a property with such a screaming liability issue. Security at the Wild Dunes entrance is only for decoration.

No internet. Motel 6 has internet but your ocean-side condo doesn't. (in fairness, I guess I should have asked)

Dirty HVAC (dirt on the ceiling surrounding the vents) and large scratches on the walls (could have been easily covered with a few dollars of paint).

Old, dirty and rusty patio furniture. Deck furniture hopelessly cheap.

If you call after hours to complain of a problem, the answering service will ask if it's an "emergency" (in other words, they're trying to stop you from complaining).
We planned to cook out on the community gas grill. After buying food, we learned the grill was out of propane. Didn't bother to call for help since none was likely coming.

The Port o Call complex is older but seems to be well maintained on the outside. Each particular unit appears to be hit or miss. They all seem to share the same locking system meaning the security problem is complex-wide. For this reason alone, we will not be back. We probably will not be renting condos anymore based on the lack of attention Island Realty showed us. A hotel does not hide behind an answering service, so you can hold them accountable more easily. Hotels also have internet.

We stayed in a condo that has a porch which steps onto the sand. Amazing! We enjoyed the porch so much that we ate every meal there as well as napped. The porch made the trip extra special since we don't like sitting on the beach all day. The positioning of the porch also meant we had shade all day! Excellent ammentities! Pool option! Close to stores and Charleston too! Best vacation ever!

D101 is first floor and pictures on the renters website were exactly how the place looked. Unit was nice and clean; fresh linens, everything advertised was true. Ocean is a 30 second walk from the back porch. Or, you can sit on the back screened in porch and just watch the ocean from there. This resort rental is located at the end of Isle of Palms; unit is end unit so its very quiet. Local if perfect. Will definitely rent this unit or another in this area again.

This was our second stay at Port O Call, with the first time being way back in 2002. We very much enjoyed our stay back then and thought we'd give this complex another try, despite some negative reviews on tripadvisor. We did quite a lot of homework to figure out which unit to choose, and ended up renting unit G104 through vrbo.com. The property manager was very responsive and quick to answer questions, and the rental process was a breeze. We didn't even have to pick up or return a key, as there is a keypad on the front door of the unit.

The unit has clearly been updated and was quite nice. The kitchen had all stainless steel, newer appliances and was fully stocked. The counters in the kitchen and bath have also been updated to stone, and the tiled glass-front shower in the bathroom also appeared to be a newer replacement. There was no carpet in the unit other than the rug beneath the king-sized bed in the master bedroom -- and I find some type of solid flooring to be a must in a beach rental! The entry room was also nicely done, with a TV and day beds that were used by our two children. This was a vast improvement over the entry room in the last unit we stayed in at Port O Call, which seemed to be pretty much wasted space. We also had a sofabed in the living area (which we never opened), so 6 people could have stayed in this unit if necessary.

My only complaint with this unit would be the view. Most of the rooms have a view of the parking lot or the building next door. The ocean is only visible when your are on the screened porch, as the unit is at the back of the G building. However, we appreciated being in an end unit, which kept things quiet, and we loved being on the first floor. This allowed us to walk straight out of the screened porch and down to the beach. Our porch also seemed to have nicer furniture than many of the units we observed.

As for the beach itself, you really can't beat Wild Dunes, as it is a private beach. We have been three times and have never seen anything close to the crowds at other beaches. In fact, we didn't ever have anyone sitting or playing near us at all on this trip -- just walkers passing by. The only problem with the beach is at high tide, when the water comes all the way up to the sand "wall" and there is no room left for making castles or sitting near the water. We found that there was plenty of room at all other times, and we weren't bothered at all by the sand bagging that was happening several buildings farther down the beach on one of the days we were out.

If we hadn't visited the pool on our last evening, I would give our experience five stars; but since I know lots of folks love to swim in the pool as well as the ocean, I have to mention our impression of it as well. If I hadn't already promised my 7 year old child that we could go swimming before I checked out the pool, I would have never even put my toe in there. It was pretty gross. The bottom was covered in sand (which is probably to be expected at the end of the day) and other debris, but that wasn't the worst part. The deep end appeared to be covered in algae, and the area above the water line was also covered in some kind of grime (which might also have been algae). Clearly, the chlorine in this pool is not being properly maintained, which can even be a health risk. Believe me, one time in there was enough.

My best advice is to do your homework before renting. You've already made a good first step by being on this site! Know where your unit is located and what your view will be. Consider whether it is important to you to be able to walk directly out of your door to the beach. Be sure you see plenty of recent pictures of your unit, and read the reviews if available. Compare prices. Talk to the owner or manager before renting to get an idea of how responsive he or she will be if you have a problem during your stay (ours actually sent us an email minutes before we arrived to let us know that he'd just been there to lubricate a sliding glass door). If you do all of those things, I think you can rent here with confidence and have a wonderful beach experience like we did!

This unit is housed in building G of Port o Call condos inside Wild Dunes resort. The buildings are older set of low rises.
The only thing postive about G102 is the location as it is steps away from the beach. The unit itself is poorly maintained. Upon arrival the washer wasn't working,A call was placed to the owners and we were told to just use a coin laundry. The bathroom is in need of cleaning as there were mildew on the tub. The overall state of the condo is dismal. Light fixtures were not in its sockets and also missing bulbs. The pantry was bare except for dishes, few utensils. You gotta bring your own salt and pepper.
Parking is first come first served. No reserved slots.
