I actually stayed at Assiniboine Lodge over a year ago in July 2016, my Wife and I spent 4 nights there and I think it is my favourite vacation I have ever had. I realized that I had spent the last year telling anyone who would listen that it is so amazing, so I should probably leave a review here saying the same thing!

Basically if you want a spectacular, invigorating outdoors experience while getting pampered, off the grid style, this is the place for you.

I had just turned 40 and my Wife asked me where I wanted to go, I had come across Assiniboine Lodge while researching backpacking trips and had always that it would be great so my choice was made.

I am not sure where to begin. First the hiking was awesome. Claude and Marie Therese were amazing, planning a route as the day progressed, getting as high up as possible and adjusting to each days conditions. We made it to mountain tops and wandered immense valleys and everything in between. The pacing was perfect, you were out for the whole day and at times hiking more challenging parts, but the pace was easy and made for such memorable, enjoyable days. Even when we got stuck in a massive storm, a radio call ahead to make sure the sauna was turned up and a bottle of wine was at hand was made for us! Nothing like that backpacking!

Our cabin was perfect and cozy with a great view of Mount Assiniboine. The staff was pleasant and attentive to all requests. And the food was amazing! I had thought it would be good but everything from breakfast to all the home made deliciousness used to make a bag lunch as well as the bountiful dinners, they were all so so so good.

This place is the most amazing blend of getting out and seeing sights and experiencing nature that most don't see, while still being completely at ease and basically pampered by some of the most wonderful people I have come across. Already looking to go back next year and I cant wait.

Our experience was so special that I'm selfishly wondering if I should share the secret. Six of us were at Assiniboine Lodge for 4 nights. We chose to fly by helicopter, but many hike for 7 hours. The setting defines pristine - the peaks, glaciers, alpine flowers and meadows represent nature at its best. We chose the easier hikes and they ranged from beautiful walks in meadows to challenging goat paths, steep climbs and cliffs. Our group of 12 were of low to average fitness. The other, younger group had some serious moments on their four different hikes from ours. Matching the wonder of the settings was the food in the Lodge. It was exceptional for any setting, never mind at the 7000' level where the ingredients are flown in by choppers. The wine is only $6.00 per glass and they were VQA. Meeting interesting, like-minded people was another peak. The staff were over the top as well. We will return, hopefully we will be able to get a reservation.

Room Tip: Not important.

We recently (mid-July) stayed at Assiniboine Lodge for 3 nights. The staff, facilities and location are top notch…far exceeding our expectations!!!

While it is possible to hike in, we decided to save our legs and take the helicopter up (and down) from the Mt Shark helipad. Check-in was at 11:30am, so we headed off from Canmore shortly before 9:00am. We enjoyed beautiful scenery during the drive though the road is a bit rough and the ride was slow at times and extremely dusty. Check-in was very efficient. Once at the helipad, we were told our flight number, tagged our gear with that flight number and then simply got in the appropriately numbered line. Soon after, we boarded for the short flight, which offered amazing views!!

After disembarking, we received a quick tour of the facilities while our gear was delivered to the lodge. We were staying in one of the cabins, so we picked up our gear and were then escorted to our cabin. We stayed in Strom which sleeps five, though there were only four of us. The cabin was much larger than I expected with sufficient storage, comfortable beds, a sink with running cold water, a private deck with a brand new table (delivered while we were there) and bench and only a short distance to a pit toilet that had the most incredible view of Mt Assiniboine! Bedding and towels were provided.

Once unpacked, we had a couple hours on our own before dinner so decided to explore the area and ended up doing a hike around Lake Magog. There was a bit of off-trail hiking required, but it was easy enough to do.

The daily schedule was something like this:
• 6:30 am – Coffee and tea available in lodge
• 7:30 am - Hot water brought to each cabin
• 8:00 am – Hot breakfast with weather and fire (yes, we were there during the BC fires) updates as well as that day’s guided hiking options
• 9:30 am until mid afternoon – Guided hikes
• 4:30 pm – Snacks served in the lodge
• 6:00 pm - Dinner

Not normally being huge fans of ‘group hiking’, we were originally thinking we’d spend our days hiking on our own. However, after hearing the options on the first day we decided to try one of the guided hikes and we were so glad we did!!! Not only were we able to learn about the area, including flowers and wildlife, but because much of hiking time was off-trail we visited places that most visitors would likely never see. Our guides, Claude and Linnea, were sensitive to each groups abilities and interests, maintaining an enjoyable pace and always making safety a priority. Regarding the ‘delicate’ topic of bathroom breaks…obviously there are no toilets along the way, but Claude and Linnea would point out ‘good opportunities’ (behind a snow bank, huge boulder or grove of trees) along the way.

During our stay there was a group from Japan that had their own guide, so they went off on their own each day. The remaining 16 guests were able to choose between two guided hikes each day.

The first day choices included a hike to Mt Cautley, including a ‘run’ down the Cautley scree or to the Wonder Pass viewpoint. Both groups started with off-trail hikes through various meadows where the flowers were in full bloom…absolutely beautiful…before heading off in their separate directions.

The hikes on the second day were essentially the same for both groups, Niblet to Nublet to Nub Peak and then down to the lakes. Each group simply hiked at a slightly different pace…one a bit faster pace than the other.

After returning from our daily hikes, we greatly appreciated the hot showers. The shower building had 3 separate showering rooms and a spa. Each showering room was spotless and had plenty of changing space, hooks to hang clothes, towels, etc, a sink with a mirror and a large shower stall. Shampoo and foaming soap were provided.

The food…well, all the reviews are spot on…everything was yummy and plentiful!! You will not go hungry!

Many thanks to the entire staff!! You made us feel like part of the ‘Assiniboine family’ and did everything possible to ensure we had the time of our lives. We very much look forward to returning at some point in the future!

We had the pleasure of staying at the lodge for two nights in July and it was a fantastic experience.

1. The lodge itself was super quaint and comfortable. The food served was absolutely delicious – we had the most amazing curry butternut squash soup, yummy coconut chicken, beef tenderloin, spanish eggs, and much more! Although we did not use the sauna due to the already hot weather, the bath area was kept immaculately clean – super refreshing after hiking all day!

2. Getting there (Heli) and getting settled in was a very efficient and well-coordinated experience. The staff had transported our bags to the lodge entrance, and Annick was quick to welcome us to our lodge rooms and show us around the area.

3. The lodge is surrounded by quite arguably the best views in the Rockies. We lucked out with some pretty awesome weather as well.

4. Our hosts, Claude and Annick, we’re super welcoming, always making sure that the guests were comfortable. We had joined a group hike with Marie-Therese who had taken us off-trail and to locations where we would have never explored ourselves! She had made the group feel at ease when we had found bear markings, and she happily shared her extensive knowledge of the environment and wildlife!

We can't wait for a second trip!

We just spent 5 days at the Lodge and it was a fabulous time! The lodge is cozy and rustic... beds were comfortable, the lodge is quiet at night and great atmosphere. The food is very good, healthy (except those wonderful desserts) and they accommodated dietary requests. The tea time snacks hit the spot after a day of playing outside. The terrain is varied. There are three guided options each day for activities, you can snowshoe, cross country touring or alpine touring (snowshoes are available, the skiing options you must bring your own equipment). We were there during a very high avalanche risk time (worse they had seen it in 40 years), so we stayed at lower elevations. It snowed and snowed which made for great conditions. They are conservative in their terrain choices due to avalanche risks, which we appreciated. We received a bit of avalanche training the first day as well. The staff are very genuine and fun, they truly want you to have a great time. As well, Claude and Andre both did several presentations in the evening on trips and history of the place. You could attend if you wanted. We really enjoyed those. It was a great experience and we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Rooms in the lodge are cozy and comfortable. Rooms in the huts are larger.
