“The Spa at the Sanctuary”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2012

The Sanctuary Spa is so dissapointing considering the 5 star hotel status...you would expect quality...but it's a waste of money. Staff acted as if they were too busy to answer questions...often they wouldn't even look up to talk to you. There weren't enough chairs to sit in while you wait for your treatment so people were sitting on laps! At a place like that, you think they could at least afford chairs! They also ran out of basic things like snacks and things for washing your face but the buckets remained empty and were not replaced the entire day.
Anyways, again, if you like throwing your money out the window, than this is your place...but if you actually like to enjoy the spa, try somewhere else.

I recently spent 4 nights at The Santuary with my husband for his birthday. This hotel is beautiful, lobby and common area's look like The Ritz Carlton with some southern elegance.

We had the corner suite with wrap around terrace and huge bath with his and her separate vanities. The room was beautiful and spotless. The hotel staff really shines here, they all knew our names and went out of their way for us on a regular basis.

I can't say enough about the staff at Club Level, they were all so nice and helpful, i never recieved such pampering at any hotel. The food at club level was very good and a had nice variety laid out at each presentation....i think there were 5 different presentations from early morning to late night. Thanks to Cody and Ashley for being so nice and helpful to us!

The tennis is why we came here, my husband had very good experience with the 2 instructors and would go back .

I didn't care for Jasmine Porch too much, we ate there for lunch and wasn't impressed, We also ate at the Atlantic room which was just o.k. We did like the spicy shrimp appetizer.

We drove to Charleston twice for dinner and once for lunch. It's about 45 minutes away. The food there is amazing, we also did a carriage Tour which was very good.

Besides Tennis and Golf there's not a whole lot to do on Kiawah, we did go on a 5 mile bike ride which was fun and luckily didn't run into any alligators on the way.

We had a nice stay and would definitely go back to The Sanctuary for a few days.

Room Tip: Loved the oceanfront corner suite, with 3 terraces!

Highlights: spacious rooms easy to fit an extra rollaway, miles of bike paths plus the hard packed beach sand means you can bike on the beach. The resort has a large beautiful oceanfront lawn that several kids enjoyed while playing soccer, frisbee, and tossing the football (concierge has one you can borrow). A covered porch overlooking the lawn has rocking chairs and waitress service from the bar. Nearby Night Heron Park has a soccer field, basketball court, nature center and lots of programming. While the resort's separate pool areas are nice for adults (18 and older) and families, the only thing we didn't like was that their was only one outdoor hot tub, located in the adults only area. The indoor pool and hot tub is a nice plus in the early spring. The staff is fantastic, friendly and very helpful.

Room Tip: Pick a room overlooking the lawn if your kids like to play ball games, that way you can watch them f...

I have stayed at over 30 Ritz Carlton properties and a number of Four Seasons properties and while The Sanctuary is nice it is no Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons. My wife and I traveled to The Sanctuary for a weekend meeting and our group stayed in the Villas but I had wanted to stay at this property for a long time so we decided to try it out. Everytime I had ever looked at the rates I was amazed at how consistently high they always were. We paid $725.00 per night for a standard club room with an oceanview but NOT oceanfront. The room was nice but not worth the price at all. For that type of price you expect a room that is very close to perfection. I found the room to be tired. The carpet while not dirty needed to be changed. It was very worn. The furnishings were stratched and worn as well. I believe the hotel is about 7 years old and it shows. The room and bathroom had extremely poor lighting. The air condtioning could barely cool the room in March. It would never have kept it cool in the heat of the summer months. Overall, the room was a huge disappointment and for the price I would highly recommend choosing another destination since The Sanctuary is the nicest property in the area including Charleston.
The service in club level was outstanding and would rival any Ritz. The food was just marginal. I also ate at the pool and again the food was marginal at best with a very limited selection.
The beach is fairly nice but the chairs the hotel provides are limited and were without a doubt the most uncomfortable beach chairs I have ever sat in. No cushion and limited recline. They were also all very close and packed in. When the ocean is at high tide there is no place to go with the chairs. Therefore, I would not recommend the beach. This is at best a golf resort.
The lobby and the common areas of the hotel and the property are beautiful and well maintained. Other than the service in the club lounge the overall service at the property left a little to be desired for the price paid.
In closing, I would have to say this was one of my most disappointing hotel selections in a long time. I went in with high expectations and left with no intention to ever return.

I traveled with a group of women executives to The Sanctuary for a meeting plus several days of relaxation. I typically head west for vacations and go to the east coast for business only. Kiawah Island and The Sanctuary have opened my eyes to what the east coast has to offer. The Sanctuary has beautiful rooms and common areas, a perfect spa and pool, and an abundance of outdoor activities that we enjoyed. The concierge set up a kayaking outing on the Kiawah River where we paddled up the river over beds of stingrays off the coast. We enjoyed watching ospreys on their nests and learning the natural history of the area. The resort has bicycles that a group of us used to ride up and down the beach racing alongside dolphins swimming up the coast while others relaxed under generous umbrellas on the sand. Morning walks at sunrise before a lovely breakfast on the patio was one of my favorite treats. While enjoying a glass of wine on our balcony before dinner one evening, we watched a mother bobcat and three kittens chasing each other around the palm tree outside our room and darting out into the brush and back onto the lawn. Priceless! Meals on site were wonderful, but quite expensive. I wish it was a shorter drive to Charleston for a shopping outing, but then, the distance perhaps allowed for all the wildlife we enjoyed on the island. I heeded the signs warning us not to venture off the boardwalk at night because of the alligators, and we did see a few of them from a safe distance. Perfect place for our women's retreat, and if we had had time for golf, too, it would have been even better because the courses there are beautiful.

Room Tip: Some rooms have larger balconies than others simply because of the design of the hotel. We all had...

We attended a three business meeting here and found the service, rooms and food above average. The location is directly on the Ocean. The Ocean Couse is a tough course, and will host the PGA Championship this year. Not for a poor golfer as every hole is a true test. Need to walk with a morning tee time can't take a cart until the afternoon. Not cheap, 18 hole morning round will cost you over 400.00 including caddie. Hotel rooms run over 300.00 even with a group rate. Charleston, with some of the best restaurants in the country is 30-35 minutes away. The selection on the island for food is good, but not on par with Charleston.
