I recently stayed here for a conference. I did not realize how big and spread out the resort would be. It is also a good 454 minute drive from Charleston. This is not a typical hotel resort. I was booked at the West Beach, Sea Scape villas. This was a strange concept to me as I typically stay in hotels on business trips. It was a nice one bedroom condo with screened in balcony. The resort is beautiful, well maintained. It is a shame that the resort is right on the beach, but most villas have no view of the beach at all. There is apparently transportation between the villas and the conference center, although it is a must to have a car here. Would be tough to rely on the shuttles to get you around. Had dinner at the Jasmine Porch in the Sanctuary. Excellent food and even better service. Matt was an exceptional waiter.

Room Tip: Try to get a beach view

the total resort is worthy. since it is seaside there is some wear to things due to salt air. having said that the issues were very minor (rusted screws on toilet seat). the location to the beach is very handy. the Golf is great and if you are a golfer you will not be disappointed. The ocean course is a must play. sign up for replay so you can play a second 9 at a reduced fee. the Cougar course is a great hidden gem. Player designed and a wonderful track. the Turtle course is pretty good. typical Nicolaus design but adjacent to the Sanctuary which is the main hotel. so, you get to see lots of beach traffic and homes and condos etc. along the course. it seemed a bit more touristy than the others. overall you will have a great time.

Room Tip: upper floors give better views. we stayed at Ship Watch which was walking distance from Cougar. we had a car and bought groceries at the supermarket outside the entrance to the island. better selection and also less expensive than on island. use the shuttle to get around and if you are going to the ocean course area give yourself 30 minutes to get there.

a boys 2 night/3 day golf trip .....I booked it through Golf Zoo (a golf pkg booking company), which I would recommend. Golf Zoo made all the arrangements and booked us into a 3 bedroom condo on Kiawah Island. The condo was clean, but furnishings were very dated. The condo itself was built using, in my opinion, very cheap fixtures, from the bathrooms, to tile, to decor, to everything. Guys don't spend much time in the unit, but it was adequate for our needs. If money is not object, I'd recommend staying at The Sancuary hotel on the property.

The Kiawah Resort is massive - it is much bigger than you might think of as a resort. It includes multiple homes, villas, a much lauded hotel, many golf courses, etc. you would have to drive or use resort shuttle to traverse the whole property.

We were greeted upon our arrival after dark by a jovial man who welcomed us warmly, and indicated that we should follow the shuttle driver to our villa, so as not to get lost. It is beautiful and natural, and very dark, so we were appreciative. He helped us into our villa, turned the lights on to make it more welcoming.

If you are renting a villa, plan carefully. Do not assume, as we did, that a five diamond resort will have only nice villas. Ours was very disappointing. It was a two bedroom, two bath, with a view of the golf course. Sounds great, right? It also had a faucet handle that came off, a toilet seat that came off, and bottom grade of every appliance. When I asked the next morning if housekeeping was coming with more towels, the answer was that housekeeping was not part of our "package". Huh? They were willing to give us towels, though. The beds and pillows wee sooo uncomfortable. Once people rented upstairs, it was incredibly noisy. We thought we were paying for a luxury resort villa, and felt like complete suckers the whole time.

There are a lot of large groups of families and friends here, many of who have been coming for more than 10 years. I felt like I had to keep alerting different staff that this was our first time here, and that we weren't quite sure what to do. Things aren't exactly marked. The very friendly staff was always happy to help, but we did feel a bit uninformed. So, let me help you, in case you choose to go:

Kids activities at Turtles Nest require reservations during busy times. This was not stated, and my daughter was incredibly disappointed one morning.

Ditto for the restaurants, such as Cherry Point BBQ. Very good, not the very best, but probably the most expensive BBQ you'll ever have. You can see gators from inside. There was a huge wait.

Everyone seems to rent bikes and it seems like a great way to get around the island.

Don't assume what is printed is accurate, e.g. The ice cream place was supposed to be open until 9, but closed an hour earlier.

All in all, we would go back--- only this time will be very careful about which villa we rent.

Room Tip: Do your homework, ask questions, state what amenities you want to be close to.

We lucked out. My family (6 adults and 3 young children) stayed 3 days at this well appointed villa that looked newly renovated. There was no ocean view, but we really enjoyed the screened porch overlooking a tranquil pond. Even the children were impressed with the villa, and commented that "it's pretty." My sister was attending a conference so we got a very nice rate on the villa. I think it would be much more expensive later in the season, too.

The kitchen made it very easy to cook...plenty of dishes, cooking pots, utensils, etc. Some of the cups were brand new with price stickers still on them. Hotel style drip coffee included, but no other condiments. Since we had planned to cook here, we brought everything including salt, oil, sugar, etc. Dishwasher was great; detergent tablets included. The tap water had a slight taste; it's normal (we used to live in Charleston 20 years ago). For this trip, we brought bottled water.

House cleaning service was included! Overall the customer service was excellent. Easy check in. Very responsive with calls and questions.

The Shuttle services were very friendly and convenient, although we also drove around in our cars because the children needed car seats. It was easy driving to the Night Heron Park where there were plenty of parking spaces. The beach was an easy 10 min walk, but with 2-year-old children, it was more like 20 min trek while carrying lots of beach toys in bulky bags. The next day we used the shuttle service.

The living room was comfortable and child-friendly, but the dining room had a table with a rather sharp cornered glass top. Each of the 3 bedrooms had its own bathroom, which was great. The mattresses had squeaky springs and not very comfy; it was OK for a short stay. Also, for bedrooms/bathroom doors there were press-button privacy locks, which our 2-year-olds quickly learned to press the locks, step out, and pull the doors shut! Good thing that those doors were easy to pick with a pointy tool. I must admit that these were nitpicking complaints, or more like, suggestions for improvement. We really had a great time staying here and would love to come back to the exact same villa if we could.
