El Chile Rojo
Ranked #13 of 19 Restaurants in Landrum
Cuisines: Mexican
Restaurant details
Reviewed 26 May 2014 via mobile

We visited El Chile Rojo on Friday night at 6:30pm Memorial day weekend. Party of 5 included 2 adults and 3 kids. Restaurant was about 60% full.

For anyone who rated El Chile Rojo as Excellent, they either have no dining standards or they are friends/family of the management. For those who rated it as Terrible, they are being too critical or spend most of their dining experiences at high end downtown restaurants. Its neither Excellent or Terrible. Unfortunately its right in between which actually makes it more difficult to rate.

I'll do a simple scorecard to make the review easier to read:

Speed on getting a table - A
Wait staff speed - B (drinks refilled quick)
Wait staff friendliness - D
Chips - B+ (my son loved the chips)
Salsa - C (too mild and watery)
Food quality - A (food had good taste)
Food speed - C
Food temperature - A (food was hot)
Bathrooms - F (dirty and disgusting)

All in all a pretty average dining experience at El Chile Rojo. We have had better Mexican just a few minutes away from El Chile Rojo but we have had much worse in the area.

Give it a try and see for yourself !

Great little Mexican restaurant in downtown Landrum. The staff was warm, friendly and attentive. The food was hot, prepared quickly and priced right for what was received. The chips and salsa was the Bomb! (Does anyone say that anymore?) and they were open on New Year's Day - Bonus!

I expected considering the size of the hispanic population, that this would be good Mexican. The place is pretty much a dive, the food is so mild as to not deserve to be called Mexican. Did find some good Mexican in Asheville, but not here since I'm told the same family owns all the restaurants. Prices do match atmosphere and food

I travel to Mexico 8 times per year. As they say "This ain't Mexican". The Salsa is weak as is everything else. The bare is ok and the restaurant clean but there are much better places to eat in the Landrum area.

Yeah, I hear you previous posters.El Chile Rojo has gone WAY downhill. Our food last time was not up to par either. We don't mind sitting in the dungeon as you put it but the food used to be a lot better.
