“Fantastic room, nice pool area (in particular for kids) - poor check-in experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2014

Our check in experience was as disappointing as the experience of some other reviewers. We arrived at the property around noon and were told that we would be called when the room is ready. We never got this call and hence just came back shortly before 4 pm (normal check in time) and the room was still not ready. When we asked again at 4:30 pm (once more without receiving the promised call) there was a long queue with just one person working. While the receptionist was polite this was not the kind of service that we had expected.

Anyway, we finally got the keycards to the room. We (two couples, one with baby) had a "2 Bedroom Suite Deluxe 2 Kings" which was absolutely great. Huge living room, two bedrooms with balconies facing the Intercoastal Waterway, well equipped kitchen with cooler, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, toaster, etc. Missing however were coathangers and the crib for the baby, which we got confirmed when we made the booking. After we asked for it, the crib arrived only after almost two hours - pretty long considering that the baby was very tired after the long journey.

Everything else about the stay was great - it is a very nice property, the room was fantastic and everyone was friendly. The pool is rather small but worked for us as we were travelling with a 14 months old baby that just enjoyed the warm water and the company of other infants (which were always around the pool). Our only suggestion to management would be to add a few more resources to the reception and to house cleaning at peak periods to reduce waiting time and to enable them to get all rooms ready before the advertised check in times.

dominik78, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the TripAdvisor community. We are so sorry that your check in experience was less than pleasurable. We appreciate the fact that you didn't let that put a damper on your stay. We apologize for the housekeeping issues and have already started looking for ways to prevent this from happening again. Thank you for the kind comments about your room and your friendly encounters with our staff. We take great pride in our property and the level of service we provide and we will make sure that on your next stay you will be welcomed by our front desk efficiently and provided with the type of service that will keep you coming back to us every year. Until next time....Have a Grande Day !!!

After doing extensive research, I chose this hotel due to the reviews and sites claiming this was one of only 2 luxury hotels in Myrtle Beach. Our experience was disappointing. We tried to check in an hour early at 3, only to be told that our room wasn't ready and that they would call us between 3 and 4 to check in. We never received a call. We returned at 4 (this was normal check-in time) and there was only one staff member working and a line of people waiting to check in. Really? They have these desks set up like it is a more intimate setting, but if you are not going to fill the desks, it would be much better to have a normal check in with a counter so the lacking in employees isn't so noticeable. Once we reached the agent, our room still wasn't ready. After ten minutes we were able to go to our room only to find the housekeeping still working in our room. We returned to front and asked for another room. The room was spacious but the furniture looked very dated (not in style but our settee looked like it had been torn apart by a cat or dog (wish I had a photo). Just not up to the standards we were expecting. It was nothing like the Marriott we had stayed in and it was given same rating. There were just a lot of little things that added to our disappointment. They had cookies and lemonade at 3:00 each day. Nice gesture but if you are not there by 2:59, you will not get one. They set out about 10 cookies. Really? Very tiny pool that was crowded. Not a vacant chair to be found at 4:00 in the afternoon.

In summary, this had all the makings of a great hotel, but there were just a lot of little details missing. I will say that we were very impressed with the valets there. They were some of the most polite and friendliest guys and made us feel very welcome even with less than pleasing service otherwise.

TBroug, I really appreciate the time you took out of your day to write a review about your stay. I am also very sorry that we weren't what you expected. Anything less than your expectations is really unacceptable to me. I have taken all of your comments to the appropriate departments and will be doing some re-evaluating so that we can prevent these issues from happening again. It does make me happy that at least the Bell team was accommodating to you and and your family. We have a great team here and I will let them know they did a great job. So on behalf of the Marina Inn please accept my apology and we really hope you decide to come back and give us another try.

Overall my family enjoyed our five-night stay at the Marina Inn. The two-bedroom villa we rented was quite spacious and comfortably furnished. I know some reviews refer to Marina Inn as luxurious, but that may be an overstatement as world-class luxury goes. Nonetheless, it's still a nice hotel. Activities for kids are rather limited though other than the swimming pool, which gets rather crowded and noisy, especially in the evening. In the main, we found the hotel staff to be very friendly and courteous. Housekeeping was generally responsive, but there are areas of improvement. For example, on the first day of our stay nobody showed up to clean the room and change linens/towels. Also be aware that the hotel is a driving distance from the beach, which works well if you're looking for an escape from the beach crowds. There are some nice dining options in and around the hotel, but be prepared to venture out by car for more variety.

Room Tip: Try avoiding rooms on the lower levels facing the swimming pool.

Tried to check in early and they weren't able to accommodation us. We understood and ate at their restaurant by the pool. Checked back an hour and a half later at the front desk, it still was not ready. We continued to their Anchor bar for drinks. Another hour and a half went by and we did not hear anything even though we were told that they would contact us and that our room would be on top priority. They used the word guaranteed check-in at 4pm. We understood what that meant and continued to wait patiently until that time. We went back to the desk at 4pm and they told us the room was still not ready. No sympathy for the fact that we had been waiting all day and just wanted to shower and change from a long day of traveling to get there. No apologizes, nothing. Spoke with a gentleman who goes there frequently and he said if the property wasn't as beautiful as it was and if the location wasn't convenient then he would never go there again considering they never have rooms ready at check-in time. Tried speaking with the manager about our dissatisfaction and he was a complete coward and did not take responsibility for the disorganization. Not even a peep of, I'm sorry. The property is a very nice one, even if the pool is very small. The staff seems under experienced in general and frazzled, but I blame management for that. I have never been more unhappy with a stay in my life and I don't consider myself very hard to please. I have stayed at many hotels of lower ratings and had better experiences just because the employees understood that hospitality meant taking care of the guests and making sure they are happy.

Room Tip: I always say the higher the better, nice view of the golf course and water. But for this hotel, any...

Dear ArdentJ: Thank you for taking the time to submit your review and for staying with us. I am so sorry that your room was not ready at 4pm. I can understand that you were very tired after a long drive to get here…I am very sorry you had to wait… and for your frustration. You mention that you tried to speak to the manager…I am being honest when I tell you that this is the first I have heard of this…however, we have a strong team, each of whom cares deeply about our guests…and you would be in good hands, no matter who you spoke to. It appears that this late check in sullied your entire trip…and I am truly sorry for that. I hope you will give us another try. We do have the best caring staff on the beach and would love to have you back. Sincerely, David Nelson, GM.

This is very simple. If you enjoy luxury, stay at the Marina Inn. Great amenities, great food and great golf at the Grande Dunes Resort, right on the Waterway. Ruth Chris is right next door with a great happy hour.

Property is much in need of refurbishing. Maid service did not get it right one time - no towels; only one coffee cup; no fresh coffee packet in room, etc. Lobby Bar bartender was useless and rude - unwilling to serve us when we were 10' away on his patio and ordering my associate to re-cross a room to close the door the bartender was unwilling to go through. Just plain lazy. One of the pool bar tenders (male) was also rude and provided poor service; the lady the next day was fine.

Room Tip: Wi-fi was glacially slow. Rooms on waterway seemed to be quieter than those on pool side. I would no...

I recently had the pleasure of staying at this hotel this August, with my family on the recommendation of another relative. Let me just say, your reputation is well earned. From the time we were greeted at the entrance and welcomed and aided with our luggage to our rooms, till the time we checked out, your staff was friendly, helpful, attentive and accommodating. The rooms were spacious (and we were eight altogether) , clean and stocked with essentials that made our stay away from home, like home in that regard. We marveled at the decor in the lobby, and the terrace provided a picture perfect view of a lake, boating and the surrounding golf grounds. The hotel was near various recreational activities, restaurants and shopping locals, We all had so much fun, we recommended your establishment to other family and friends and can't wait to stay next Summer again at our new home away from home in the Carolina's, The Marina Inn at Grand Dunes. Thanks for making our stay pleasant, wonderful and unforgettable! -Elena, Bronx NY

Room Tip: Rooms fifth floor or higher.
