First of all I have to say that I researched like a 100 of the 215 hotels in myrtle beach. I'm a little obsessed and nervous when it comes to going to strange places.
First and foremost cleanliness is a huge deal to me. At this resort the workers were constantly moping and sweeping and wiping. I don't know about everyone else but we had excellent daily housekeeping. They change the bed linens every 3rd day unless you request otherwise. We saw housekeeping every day. Our bed was always made and the bathroom was always cleaned. I got to know housekeeping on the 4th floor and they were great! Some hotels have that funny hallway smell, but not this one. I never smelled any musty odors, ever!
Our room was perfect for what we needed. The style was a little dated IMO, but the furniture was comfortable. The Murphy bed worked great for my teenage daughter and her friend. Even with it down we had plenty of living room space. If there was any points for deduction, I noticed a small rip in the couch cushion. We just flipped it over. No biggy. The T.V.'s were the older style box T.V.'s and the one in the bedroom was small, about a 20", but they didn't bother us. The hotel has a free DVD rental box, like red box. We rented a movie for free once at night. I thought that was a nice feature. All the dishes were clean and nice in the full sized kitchen. The air conditioning was adjustable and worked great, but I did hear someone on the elevator say their air was not working properly. Room 409 worked great! Also the tub was so huge both girls put their bathing suits on and hoped in the tub creating a massive bubble bath. Teens!
Parking: well, I would imagine that all the resorts were a little crowded. We were there the week after the forth and there were a lot of people. Most of the time we found a spot in the garage, but if we didn't there was an overflow parking lot across the street. Do not think that is awful. The walk is very short. Not a big deal at all. The garage was a little tight around the corners, but that's probably normal.
The location was in a good location. I hadn't been to Myrtle in 20 years. The resort is considered south myrtle. I didn't know the difference. There were several high rises all close to one another where we were at. I kind of liked all the options it provided. If you walked out the back of the hotel there was a cute little ice-cream shop across the street. Then beside that was a mini-mart. It was expensive IMO, but it was great for unprepared vacationers like ourselves to grab snacks and drinks quickly. Also caddy corner from that is Scoobies. It's a small little ice-cream and grill shop connected to the grand atlantic resort but is open for anyone. We didn't order the food, but it looked and smelled great! As far as driving to different places goes we were like 10-15 minutes from Pirates Voyage, Carolina Opry, and Broadway at the Beach that has lots of cool shops, restaurants, and some attractions like Magic Quest and Wonderworks which was way overpriced. All was very easy to get to and traffic wasn't even that bad. I'm guessing it was about 10 Min to the boardwalk and skywheel. That was a fun little time. Felt like a carnival atmosphere with all the live music, shops, food, and attractions. Barefoot Landing was like 30 minutes away. That was more of a hike. We checked that out when we got to myrtle beach before we could check in. Cool place.
Amenities: I loved how our hotel was set up. when you went out to the pool area, right to the right was Sandals restaurant. We ate breakfast there two mornings. Really enjoyed the hot breakfast bar. Always full and staff came to your table several times to see if you needed refills. It wasn't a huge restaurant, but it worked for us. The pool area was cool because the indoor pools were not enclosed. It was like they were underneath a covered area of the hotel, but you could see and walk to the outside through an all open wall with huge arch ways. Indoor was a pool. Not huge, but had a basketball hoop the kids seemed to enjoy. There was a big square hot tub that could fit probably 15 people, but was never full. Then there was a round kiddie pool and then beside that was the ultra awesome lazy river that looped around an enormous whirlpool hot tub. It was amazing! Outside was a very large outdoor pool. For as many people that were there, we never felt crowded or cramped swimming in any of the pools. They also had a ping-pong table, and a life size chess set that was neat. Staff were cleaning the pools every morning. and kept everything around all the tables and beach chairs super clean. I actually felt sorry for the kid who had to hose off the sand where people wash their feet. We tried not to laugh, but when people would walk up after he had finished an area the look on his face was priceless. He was never mad, held the gate for people, and was very pleasant, but I'm sure he felt like cussing out people. LOL The tiki bar was on the left side in the front lawn. That was a favorite spot of mine! We got to know the bar tenders and they were fantastic! We sat under one of the umbrella tables, looked out at the ocean, sipped frozen drinks, and listened to the DJ. It was awesome! PS Try the banana margarita's. They are out of this world!!
There really isn't anything much to complain about. I took off a star for the rip in the couch, the parking, but only mildly, and we did have to have our room lock reprogramed 3 times for some crazy reason. There were also several people later in the night that enjoyed their alcohol a little too much by the pool, but by that time they were about the only people there and never bothered me a bit.
I do have to say that this resort had some of the BEST workers out of ANYWHERE I have ever stayed. If you needed something they hoped to it. If you wanted to chat they were so super friendly. I guess working at such a fun atmosphere puts you in a good mood. Even the guy who rode the elevators all day moping up from wet feet had to have taken a happy pill. Honest to god these people were fantastic. Every single one of them!
