“Fantastic weekend”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We do birthday weekend for three family birthdays a week apart. We are local so we choose a local destination as peopled have to work.

This year we chose the Island Vista due to location and friend reports. All were positive. All were correct.

The main down mark was parking. Had been advised to back in parking spot. Great advice as spots are small and maneuverability compromised.

Room was great from 11th floor. Beach not crowded. Pools nice. Free DVD. House made pizza superb. Cypress Room restaurant outstanding.

The rooms are so elegant and top notch, Gorgeous views up and down the beach and the staff on site are terrific. The grounds are meticulously manicured. Wonderful views from the restaurant. Beds are luxurious, you'll get an amazing nights sleep.

Room Tip: No parking garage after 6th floor, so upper levels you have to either go to middle of bldg for eleva...

A group of 30 golfers have been staying in the Island Vista each of the last five years. Spacious rooms, friendly service and one of the best beaches in Myrtle. I have stayed in many hotels and Condo's over the years in Myrtle, Island Vista easily the best.

Room Tip: Corner Suite's are best.

Ok, I'm really torn with writing this review as the hotel views are beautiful but the hotel itself has LOTS of issues.

We entered the hotel to a tiny claustrophobic lobby. Check-in itself was very easy and the unlimited DVD rentals was a really element to our stay. Once we exited the elevator and arrived at our floor, the hallways were like 100 degrees! They are very narrow and grossly outdated.

The Room:
We entered to an extremely hot room. Rounding the corners to the rooms and kitchen area we noticed several scuff marks and nicks on the walls. Windows were dirty with fingerprints and door handles were a bit sticky in the kitchen. Not to mention the plain white appliances were a bit outdated. Dishes came in the cabinets but were very dirty. The carpets seemed to be bunched in places while smooth in others. The bathrooms were very lackluster consisting of plain shower kits and out-dated silver framed doors. Plumbing was a constant issue with clogged showers leaving you to stand in one foot of shower run-off water. The decor truly needs updating as obviously noticed by the outdated tube-style televisions.

The Service:
Overall I would say that the hotel staff was helpful and adept. Maintenance was very helpful as we had many plumbing issues in our room and they were a constant during our trip.

The Fitness Room UGH!!!
Guys it's just disgusting! Mold or mildew on the vents and the equipment is TOTALLY outdated. It's so outdated that the elliptical even had RUST on the handles. The room is very clumsy with only a few selections and all machines needing to be cleaned. The floors are weird and filthy. There wasn't even a working water dispenser. The room was just gross and I couldn't wait to get out of there! I totally recommend that Island Vista gets it together with that workout room!

Parking:
Very cramped, very low ceilings, and not well lite at night. We almost had an accident as the corners are so sharp and you have no way of knowing whether there will be an oncoming car as you try to cross to the hotel hallway.

Housekeeping:
I will say this, on many occasions we saw several staff in brown uniforms congregated in the parking garage. Don't they have a break room? They don't vacuum or wash dishes, they appear to just lightly straighten beds and replenish soaps and tissues and towels.

The Cypress Room
Ok, so after watching "Beach tv" and seeing how high class the Cypress room supposedly was, we decided to give it a try with our kids for dinner. We were given a gift card by the hotel and so we decided to use it on the "Vista Pizza" which came highly recommended by the hotel staff upon check-in. TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT!! Pizza is not gourmet by any standard, didn't even match the pictures on the menus. If you've ever had take and bake pizza from Walmart, Sam's Club or the like you'll know exactly what this pizza tastes like. Only difference is that they charge you twice as much!

The View:
I've decided to save the best for last and the view is definitely the best thing about this hotel. It is just beautiful. I honestly think people are giving high marks to the view not the hotel. However we couldn't really even enjoy the view on our patio because whenever we sat out there the room adjacent to us would chain smoke and totally ruin our experience.

Overall Impressions
The Island Vista has a long way to go. When you pay upwards of $300 you expect a high level of accommodations. Even though the room has been used time and time again, you expect to feel like the room is in excellent condition and pristine (terms I would NOT use to describe these rooms). There are many things that need to be updated from the fitness center (please guys), floor hallways, paint in rooms, appliances, showers, plumbing & carpets.

Many give Island Vista top reviews buy honestly I feel their just "coasting" on views of the beach.

Thank you for your recent review and for choosing the Island Vista as your recent host. You seem to have applied a lot of effort to express yourself, but I wish you could have done so while you were here! No business is without an occasional problem, but in a company such as our own, problems are addressed immediately. You might have been customers in the past of companies that don’t follow that guideline, and that’s understandable in today’s world. I will address as many items in your list as possible, and I’ll try to follow your lead by category…

I am a pretty big guy and I’ve never felt claustrophobic in our lobby, but you did make me wonder. I asked one of our maintenance technicians to actually measure, and found that it’s 78’ from the indoor pool door to the fireplace, and 58’ from the fireplace to the veranda exit where the rocking chairs are. The space from the fireplace to the check-in desk is over 900 square feet, and in the very center of that area is a beautiful antique table with a floral arrangement designed by one of our area’s most talented artists. Above that (and the above the fireplace, too) are recessed areas in the ceiling that have been intricately designed by a local cabinetmaker using 80+ year-old cypress logs found in the Black River near Georgetown, and you may also have noticed the genuine cypress walls throughout the lobby.

The Room: All of our rooms and suites are subject to scheduled maintenance programs each year during the quiet months… these processes include fresh paint, preventative mechanical maintenance, wiring checks, etc. This year, we replaced all of our sleeper sofas, coffee tables, and occasional chairs with new and very attractive furniture that has been the subject of many kind compliments. We also imported new 500-thread-count Egyptian cotton bedcovers and duvets… these were ordered to go on the new upgraded beds for 2014. All beds (mattresses, box-springs, and bases) are all new. We take great pride in our resort and its condition… I am sure that if an issue had been pointed out to our staff that it would have been immediately addressed.

You mentioned that the room was not cooled when you entered… this was a normal function of our green energy management system. Our units are designed to operate at a minimum when not being used, then, at check-in, are automatically set to the default temperature. Usually, by the time you reach the room, it’s comfortable. This system saves in every way, environmentally, energy usage, and mechanically… for example, if you open the doors out to the balcony, the system is disabled, and when you close them, it is automatically returned to the setting within 60 seconds. During your stay, one of the climate control units on the roof was being replaced, and it was one that controls one of our hallway zones. Your accommodations must certainly have been on one of those floors, and for that we can only apologize. From time to time, a mechanical malfunction can occur, and they never choose to occur at a convenient time… however, we take immediate action to implement the remedy.

The Service: Thank you! Customer service is our top priority always at the Island Vista.

The Fitness Room: Our fitness room is an amenity provided for light exercise and enjoyment… it includes treadmills, bicycle, an elliptical machine, and a universal weight machine. The floor is a non-slip safety cushion surface designed for that environment… it is cleaned daily, and clean dry towels are provided there daily as well. We are on the oceanfront, however, and often guests come directly from the beach with a little ocean water & sand. Minor rust can occur as a result, but our maintenance crew takes care of it. That area is a little bit of a work in progress in that the air conditioning system was recently replaced with an entirely different system that is quieter, more efficient, and green in every way. The old ceiling vents are no longer in service, and are scheduled to be removed entirely. When changes occur, they often take a little time. Our exercise room is an amenity, and should not be considered to be a full service gym facility, and we certainly don’t recommend it as a sole focus in choosing the Island Vista as a resort destination.

Parking: Often, in replying to comments about our parking decks, I reveal that I’m the sort of person who generally looks for the good things throughout my day. In the past, I actually researched the width of our parking spaces and found them to be standard… the decks are on the same side of the street and were designed to be part of the resort so that you can enter our hallways directly for convenience. We provide oversize-vehicle parking outside, and inside, we suggest the use of headlights and slow speeds.

Housekeeping: We have great pride in our housekeeping staff… these employees have the responsibility of one of the most important aspects of our resort. Their job focus changes daily based on our visitors’ needs and specific requests, and they adjust accordingly. “Do not disturb” signs are honored, but when normal daily housekeeping needs are addressed and additional needs are indicated, our staff members are always quick to respond. In short, if you have a need, all you have to do is say so. They do sometimes take a short break outside because they don’t often take formal breaks elsewhere… many employees travel long distances to work, and are therefore only here for a limited time each day. They are friendly, honest, and quick to respond to the needs of our guests.

The Cypress Room: Thank you for mentioning the Cypress Room Rewards Card! This is a gift that we provide to let you know that we appreciate your business. Chef Mike and the Cypress Room are often the subjects of very positive reviews in culinary arts publications, and are often recipients of high-profile awards in this field, such as the 2010 Iron Chef Myrtle Beach top place. Whether you choose the Carolina Flounder-Crab Roulade, Seared Diver Scallops, Citrus Crust Grouper, our special Grilled Filet Mignon, or a pizza, all items are created specifically for you from only fresh local ingredients. We don’t prepare items in advance… it’s all made specifically for you. If there’s ever any problem, though, a word to the Cypress Room manager at the time will provide the answer… he takes great pride in our restaurant and works hard to assure that our patrons have our best.

The View: Agreed… it is spectacular, isn’t it? It is unfortunate that smoke was evident during your stay… we are an entirely smoke-free interior, but Myrtle Beach has yet to legislate smoking out of doors, and we do not interfere with the personal choices of our guests.

One thing I can assure, we do not coast along here at the Island Vista… if we are not already involved in one process of maintaining or improving the resort experience for our guests, then we’re always planning a new one. Many, many guests choose to provide very positive reviews on Trip Advisor, and these are all honest visitors stating honest views… we appreciate all of them and we also appreciate how diverse perspectives can be. We hope you will choose to visit us again in the future.

Thank you.

Hotel was clean. Staff was friendly. We had a minor issue at check in but Bob was so nice and went above and beyond. He more than made up for the minor issue. Pools are nice. Breakfast was great and value was great. We will definitely be back.

We had another wonderful vacation at Island Vista this year. It is a first class resort with a perfect location, facility, pools and restaurant. The professional staff works so hard to make it a special time for the entire family.

Room Tip: We love the view on the high floors

We chose Island Vista for our anniversary vacation based on Trip Advisor reviews. Turned out to be a perfect choice - it was everything we hoped for!
Suite: Our room was a one bedroom, 2 bath, oceanfront suite on the 11th floor. Views were stunning! The suite was beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean, and had all the comforts of home.
Kitchen: Beautiful with pots/pans/ utensils, dishes, etc- everything needed to prepare dinner at home. (Bring your own paper towels/napkins).
Bed: Sleeping was comfortable- bed and linens were lovely. Ceiling fans in each room were a great touch.
Staff: All staff were wonderful- Especially Joe who waited up and greeted us warmly when we arrived late.
Pool: Didn't use indoor pool- outdoor pool was immaculate and heated- fabulous!
Location: Quiet, upscale, northern neighborhood. Turned out our vacation coincided with Bike Week in Myrtle Beach. Lots of bikes on the road- could get noisy at times! Island Vista was a great location away from the busiest areas of MB. However- most shopping/dining/entertainment is a distance and not within walking distance. If you want to be in the "middle of everything' this may not be the place for you.
Cypress Room Restaurant: Absolutely wonderful. While we only dined once- for dinner- the food was wonderful (Shrimp and grits are incredible!) and the service was better than anything I've experienced in recent years. Southern hospitality at it's finest along with soft, live, music to round out the experience.
Overall we had a wonderful stay and are looking forward to going back soon!
