“Just an average restaurant”
Reviewed 11 June 2008

We had eaten at Umbertos on a previous trip(4 years ago) and enjoyed it so much that we could'nt wait to go back. This time even though some of the dishes were good some were not. We arrived shortly after 6pm and we were the only ones in the place. Very surprising to us since the last time we went it was packed. We were obviously promptly seated and our waiter was right over. My first impression was that the owners have just let the place go. The table linens were wrinkled and the windows were smudged..etc. No upkeep. We ordered our food. Crab Cakes, Mixed Seafood Grill, Pork Chop, and New York Strip Steak. All of the items served with the meal were really good and we enjoyed them very much. However when our food arrived it was a different story. The Crab Cakes were meaty and very good. The Mixed Seafood Grill was way overpriced for what was recieved. Some of the seafood was overcooked and tough. The New York strip was ordered med. Rare but came out Med well. Needless to say we sent it back. The waiter cam back and aplogized and said it was his mistake. We got the feeling that the chef chewed him out. When we got the new steak it was very rare and a very fatty cut. My husband ate what he could and said it wasn't worth the effort to send it back again. The Pork Chops pleased our dining partner also. He loved them. As stated a very mixed review on this restaurant. We doubt if we'll every go back there to eat.

“Nice dinner- if you like garlic”
Reviewed 16 May 2008

We arrived late- 8pm-- no wait, good service and loud to start off.
The beans/greens, salad and angelhair pasta are served family style- the entree's are individual and large servings.

Big portions- enough for leftovers--
lots of garlic and Ouzo seemed to be the drink of choice amongst diners.

We would recommend this place to friends.

“Good food but dirty!”
Reviewed 19 April 2008

I've been to Umberto's many years in the past but this year was a disappointment. We went to dinner there two times this past week. The first time the service was terrible and place was dirty. There was a large party of baseball players (high school baseball team) that night so we attributed the experience to that. Our waiter (wish I had gotten his name to publish here) took our food away before we finished each course and we felt very rushed! But when we returned later in the week, hoping that our first visit was a fluke, we experienced the same thing-dirty environment but the service was better.

The facility was dirty! And I mean dirty! The table cloths were stained and had food on them. I was wondering if they were being changed between patrons. The cloths are a bright pink and they had large oily blobs all over them. Some of our silverware had to be retuned because it was dirty with leftover food on it. Each course requires small bread plates. Out of the 8 plates given to us, 5 were dirty or had left over food on them. Either the dishwasher is broken, not working correctly or something! Very disappointed in the cleanliness!

The food was very good as usual. We love the "courses" that are served before dinner-warm bread, beans and greens (similar to Pasta Fasoli) tomato salad, and pasta/sauce. I had chicken picata which was good and my friend had an "okay" pasta/shrimp/olive dish (the name escapes me).

“Out of lasagna???”
Reviewed 13 April 2008

Decided to try Umberto's based on a friend's recommendation. Our visit was on a Saturday, and we were the first party to be seated when the restaurant opened at 5:00 pm. After looking at the menu, which was somewhat limited, the three of us all decided on the lasagna. Upon ordering, we were informed by the waitress that they were out of lasagna! Since they had just opened for the day, to not have any lasagna available (when they had all day long to make some) is inexcusable. Had we known this upfront when we were first seated, we most likely would've walked out.

Unless you want chicken or veal, the menu is very limited, especially with pasta selections. They do not offer any dishes such as fetuccini alfredo, manicotti, ravioli, etc. The entrees we did eventually decide on were good, but nothing spectacular, and certainly not worth the expensive menu prices that are typical in an upscale italian restaurant.

As far as being "Pittsburgh italian" goes....I'm from Pittsburgh, and have eaten at dozens of italian restaurants (both upscale and moderately priced) that are a thousand times better than Umbertos.

“Great Meal at Umberto's North Myrtle Beacch”
Reviewed 27 March 2008

Last night I took my two children and my niece to Umberto's at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach. We had read many reviews and everyone raved about this restaurant. It was fantastic! We each ordered a different dinner: chicken marsala, ossobuco, eggplant and veal parmesan and spaghetti with clams. The meal started with our waiter bringing out a loaf of fresh bread and butter, soon followed by a bowl of beans and greens. The bean stew was so delicious. Next he brought a bowl of salad tomatoes marinated with oil, spices, onions and peppers. Again, so yummy. The next course was angel hair pasta with red sauce. By the time our actual dinners arrived we were stuffed. All the entrees were very good. Somehow we must have missed the part of the menu that described the first three courses. The entrees are huge, and we left with several take out boxes of leftovers. I highly recommend this restaurant--be sure to call for reservations even in the off season. We almost didn't get a table since we had no reservation.
