Owner description: The mission of Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation is to protect and preserve the culture, tradition and living heritage of the North American Indians. The Foundation demonstrates its commitment to this endeavor by continuing the progress on the world's largest sculptural undertaking by carving a memorial of Lakota leader Crazy Horse; by providing educational and cultural programming; by acting as a repository for American Indian artifacts, arts and crafts through the INDIAN MUSEUM OF NORTH AMERICA(R) and the NATIVE AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL & CULTURAL CENTER(R); and by establishing and operating the INDIAN UNIVERSITY OF NORTH AMERICA(R) and, when practical, a medical training center for American Indians.

We visited Crazy Horse Memorial in September and what a place! Absolutely loved it. We liked it better than Mount Rushmore simply because it it still raw, unfinished and unpretentious. I would love to be around when the monument is finished but that isn't a possibility it is going to take decades. This project is unfunded by the Government so the funds come in through the gate mostly. I think finishing the face was a brilliant strategy because you can see how impressive the whole work will be when completed. The animal gate is lovely and the museum so interesting. I think having the completed model in the foreground of the massive monument is a stroke of genius because the photos of that are amazing. Don't miss this place it should be on everybody's "bucket list of places to visit."

I was driving across the Northern States, and stopped in Rapid City to see Mount Rushmore….Decided to take this in as well. I liked it way better.

This monument is still under construction…and will be for decades. But what is already here, is pretty spectacular.

It costs $10 to get in…pittance if you ask me.

When you arrive be sure to take in the small film about the history of the project. It is inspiring how the original sculptor's family has taken on the family's legacy.

The scale of this endeavour will blow your mind. All four heads from Mount Rushmore will fit into the hair of Crazy Horse.

After the film, be sure to walk around. There are some native crafts people, selling their wears, lots of history and information about the native people and their lives in the area.

A place to grab a bit to eat…

I really enjoyed my time here…and would go back if I am ever in the area.

Spotted this a long way off on the horizon while travelling back from road trip on the Iron Mountain Road, but didn't know what it was. Made a point of visiting next day, and glad we did. Incredible to think that Mt Rushmore would fit inside the head of the Crazy Horse Memorial ! The memorial itself is spectacular but the visitors centre also has loads to keep you interested. We also took the bus ride to the foot of the mountain - saves a walk. Our driver was both informative and amusing. OK it's a long way off being completed but you have to take your hat off to what a small crew have achieved so far. Suspect work will accelerate with modern techniques, etc.

This felt like a homage to the sculptor who managed to carve out himself a nice little earner. I don't know how native Indians feel about it, to be fair we didn't see any there to ask, but it felt to us like another way they had been screwed over. When he was commissioned to build it I'm sure they never expected this. Apologies if the money from the gift shop, entry fees etc goes back to the Indian community but if it does they didn't mention it. I would recommend driving by and taking photos from the road instead.
