“Excellent hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 September 2012

We stayed at The Lodge Sept. 14 and 15. What a beautiful hotel. We came down for the Deadwood Jam. Not a problem getting back and forth to Deadwood. The trolley came up every hour. The driver did tell us that the #150 is the only trolley that goes up to the Lodge. We always took a taxi back because we just did not want to wait for the trolley all the time. It was about a $7.00 ride but we did not mind.

One thing we really liked was the fact that you did not have to walk through the large casino to get to your rooms. The elevators are a little slow but you get to meet people while you wait. They have a nice lobby area with coffee and tea available at all times. Also have a business area with two computers to use. Wi-Fi is also available in the rooms. We stayed in a king size room - includes a frig – which we always like to have. The rooms are gorgeous – there were comfortable leather chairs in the room – the view was very nice. I thought the beds were very comfortable. Tons of pillows. Next time we will ask for a balcony because we enjoy sitting outside but that would not keep us from staying again if we could not get one. We just enjoyed the whole place. The people working at the desk were so nice and the waitress in the Deadwood Grille was fantastic – wish I could remember her name – she was fun and so nice. We had breakfast – I had a Ham and Cheese Omelet – it was very good and huge. They used swiss cheese – excellent. Fried potatoes and bread – my husband had Eggs Benedict – very good. I also had a Bellini – goes great with breakfast- it is champagne with peach puree – wonderful!!!

We enjoyed the casino too – it was a very big casino – plenty of machines. The waitresses were always coming around. I believe they had an area for smoking customers but could not smell any smoke. It was nice to be at the Jam but felt good to come back a quiet hotel. At least we did not hear any noise during our stay. The hotel was full but you would never have known it – plenty of parking. Hopefully we can stay again next year for the Deadwood Jam – I felt the prices were comparable to the other hotels for that event – it was a great weekend.

We chose to stay at the Lodge as a 'staycation' for our 5th anniversary with our daughter. We live in nearby Spearfish, but the restaurants onsite are some of our favorites in the region, so we thought we could have a nice dinner and then walk safely to our room for a quiet evening. We had never been in the hotel portion of the resort, and it was quite nice. Nicely chosen color scheme, and we actually really liked the art that was chosen throughout the facility. A real bonus was the fantastic kid pool for our 4-year old daughter. She had an awesome time. The cleanliness of the facility is impeccable. We had a 'normal' room (without a deck), and it was quite spacious - I especially appreciated the counter space in the bathroom.

The only minor issues that I would mention: the first is rather important for room selection only - we had an adjoining room, but we didn't know the neighbor - so the room was separated by just two doors. Our neighbor - a very nice lady had some friends over a few times late in the evening (like 11:30p and 1:30a). They were not noisy, just chatting at normal levels, but it came through the doors like they were open. It was rather surprising, actually. So, next time we stay at the Lodge, we'll be requesting a non-adjoining room. The second thing is that the toilet paper was on par with a lady's prison. No offense to lady's prisons. Really, don't make the extra quarter on sub-par toilet paper. The rest of the facility is quite lovely, so why cut corners on paper products?

The room was very spacious with a separate seating area from the bedroom area. Good if one of you is up later or earlier than the other - you can read or watch tv without disturbing the other one. The funny thing is the room is huge but the bathroom is tight. Definitely a design flaw. They could have easily made the bathroom more spacious without taking away from the bedroom/sitting area. We watched the opening night of the NFL season in their sports bar. The food was okay but didn't live up to the quality of the rest of the hotel. Had the black and bleu burger but hardly any blue cheese on it. The bison barbeque sandwich was the best meal that we had. The breakfast was large in portion size but again only average. Had the french toast but it lacked flavor - need to add cinnamon to it. Pool and jacuzzi area was very nice!! The jacuzzi was the largest one that we'd every seen but the jets were lacking barely moving the water around. The temperature was nice and warm. They don't have a pool but more of a water playground. Much of it is shallow for small kids but there was an area about 3' or 4' deep where we played basketball. Front desk staff was very nice especially when we locked our keys in the room. Outside of the downtown area of Deadwood but not far. After having visited the town, we were happy to be staying at the Lodge at Deadwood.

This is a very nice hotel if you're staying in Deadwood. We didn't spend a ton of time in the lodge and rather opted to check out Deadwood and the area.

The rooms very very clean and well appointed. Casino was nice although we didn't spend much time there. No issues with it being smokey in the casino - we are very sensitive to that.

Pros: Clean and quiet rooms. Lots of parking and a shuttle that runs to Deadwood every hour.

Cons: You do need to drive or shuttle to get to Deadwood. Not super far but not walk friendly. Quite pricey.

The hotel room was great. Shower, bed, air conditioning, free parking all wonderful. The hotel is completely separated from the casino. We had to walk through the casino to get to the restaurant, but there wasn't the usual stale smell of smoke - a welcome surprise. The laundry only had 2 washers & dryers, but they were quick cycles. Ate dinner and breakfast at the Deadwood Grill and both were good. The hotel offered a Deadwood shuttle for a small fee, but we chose to drive the short distance and use the metered parking. We would recommend this hotel to others.

We did not stay here, but visited the Casino a couple of times and walked through the hotel and restaurant area while in the Deadwood area. This place is really well done. It is unlike the casino's down in the town. It is set high atop a hill with beautiful views from every direction. If you want to stay in a place with some class while visiting the South Dakota area....I would say this is the one.

The only complaint we had is we had to leave to early. It was clean and no smoking anywhere was great. It is a little pricey but it's a super nice place. The casino was fun and the poker room was set up great other than a limited number of games going on.
