“What a Place”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

We are great fans of Holiday Inns, but have never been to one as lavish as the Deadwood Mountain Grand Hotel in Deadwood, SD. We were greeted at the door and walked over the correct elevator to take us to hotel registration. Our room was beautiful and the bathroom was amazing. We went downstairs to one of the nicest casinos outside of Reno or Las Vegas NV we have ever seen. As we were leaving to go back upstairs to our room there was a hardworking gentleman who was cleaning the legs of each chair in the casino. I have never seen that attention to cleanliness in a public place. We commented to the young man, he seemed embarrassed, but what a job he was doing. Wish he would clean my house!!!

My husband and I agree, this hotel may have had the NICEST BED we've ever slept in while on the road. We stayed in a King room, and everything was clean and totally lovely.

The less-than-perfect rating comes because of the maze one has to go through to get to the hotel section. I suppose it's common to run people through a casino when it's part of the hotel, but it's somewhat embarrassing to drag one's luggage through there. (They do have carts at the entrance, but we arrived fairly late and just took our bags in by hand. No attendant was there.)

Once you go up the first elevator, you'll find the front desk, which is literally a "desk." The check-in clerk (mgr?) spent A LOT of time looking between my husband's ID, credit card, and AAA card (which we used for a 10% discount). We found that odd. Maybe after a long day of travel we looked a bit "sketchy????" We're adults in our mid-50s, and really haven't had this happen before.

Then it was time to find our room. It's a bit confusing... around this pillar, and up another elevator. When we went out for dinner and came back, we got a bit turned around, but figured out where we were.

However, let me say again: IT IS WELL WORTH THE EFFORT as the room was wonderful.

The only other comment is to ask the hotel to spend a little more on toilet paper. I think the stuff I run through my printer is softer. Just a suggestion...

We experienced absolutely phenominal treatment by guest services employee Kristi Gondzar at the Grand Hotel in Deadwood S. D. during the Sturgis Bike Rally. She went above and beyond the call helping us during a severe rainstorm with weather info., helping us find a place to stay as the "Grand" was full by calling hotels in the area and generally being as helpful as one could be. Especially during a time when the hotel is as "busy as it gets". We also remarked and talked to Brad Hemmah, Gen. Mgr. as to the care Kristi showed us and he was very caring as well in our predicament. Your owners and prospective customers of your hotel should know that the management of the "Grand" have a great interest in "Customer Service" which is not very commonplace in your business today. Thank You and I'd like to be the first to vote for Kristi as "Employee of the Year". She MADE our day!!!!!! Bruce F Holt

We arrived at the hotel around 3 pm on August 17th. My husband is a platinum ihg member (not acknowledged) and we used points to reserve a room booked over 2 months in advance. We went to the room after checking in it was a King Handicap assessable room no tub definitely not the room we booked. The room that was booked was a King executive (Sleeps 3) One of the front desk employees told us they could bring a cot in! Totally missed the whole point of why we were not happy. Also we were told that the room explanations/descriptions online did not accurately represent what the rooms are. The room they gave us was not what our reservation indicated. We tried to explain this and were given the run around about how it was booked through ihg and this might have been the problem, different desk clerks had different excuses and contradicted each other on several occasions. We weren't asking for an upgrade we just wanted the room we booked. We decided that we were not going to stay since it would not meet our needs for the night and next morning. Jennifer Trouton the front desk supervisor assured us that our points would be refunded and that the manager Travis Trautman would contact us on Monday to return the points. It is Thursday night the 21st and not a call. The hotel looked like a great facility and we really would have liked to stay.

Let us begin by saying we are so sorry for the confusion and customer service errors that surrounded your visit. Please be assured that the points you have made have been addressed and appropriate training measures put in place with our management and staff to ensure they won't happen again. We are sure there were isolated events that we sincerely apologize for and are disappointed you encountered. Your experience is atypical of the GRAND guest experience we strive for and we invite you back for another positive experience at our property.

We enjoyed our stay at the resort, overall a good experience. Really interesting history for this property, which was an abandoned mining slime plant. The remodeling job is wonderful. The staff here is the greatest asset, from the super helpful bellmen to the front desk and housekeeping staff. Our accessible room was very nice, really quiet, clean and comfortable. The only issue we had was that the pillow top bed was very high and made wheelchair transfers difficult. For me it was a great bed but tough for my husband.
The casino was fine, better than most in town but not as luxe as its' main competitor. The restaurant was good, but again not as good as the competition. However the competition does not have the location or the great history of the resort.

Stayed here the week before Sturgis and had a great time. The rooms are very clean and spacious with comfortable bed. Being your own pillow though. Ours were very tired and lumpy. The bathroom was amazing with a huge shower and good counter space. Walking distance to main st and all the shops and casinos. Will definitely stay here again.
