“Nice Hotel, Great Breakfast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2012

Hotel is pleasant, nice comfy beds and good ammenities in the bathrooms. Please, please fix the blinds in the rooms --the sun rises quite early and woke us up.

The breakfast were outstanding! The first morning we ate there, there were three of us and we all ordered our own breakfast. The omelettes are huge, the coffee is hot and the service is very attentive. My daughter could not eat all her food, so the next morning we shared an omelette.

Nice decor, nice service, parking is easy, the location on the main 'strip' is the BEST --I would recommend this hotel!

We are happy to hear you enjoyed the location of our hotel so much. It is nice to be right in the middle of Deadwood and experience it all. Our cook at Bully's does a wonderful job and makes great omelettes, which you had the opportunity to enjoy! We look forward to serving you again on your next trip to Deadwood.

We were so glad that this hotel was recommended to us - what a great place to stay. It is upgraded with what you need to be comfortable but the historic value and feel of the hotel still remains. The staff is welcoming and service is great! One staff member even took the time to tell us some great stories about the hotel's history and the renovation. And don't miss the breakfast! Terrific food at a great price! You won't be sorry that you stayed at this hotel - great location, comfortable, reasonable price and you feel like you stepped back in time! What fun! Will definitely return to Deadwood and stay here again.

Thank you for your wonderful comments. We appreciate hearing that our staff is friendly and that you truly enjoyed your stay. While we did completely renovate the hotel, we wanted to keep the special touches Seth Bullock had left. We hope you come and enjoy yourself again at the Bullock real soon!

My grandfather settled in the Black Hills over 100 years ago, and our family has been coming to the Hills on vacation for 50 years. After the Homestake gold mine finally closed, Deadwood was revived by legalized gambling, and the Bullock Hotel is a great example. The magnificent stone building has been completely restored, and is a perfect location for a stroll on Main Street. All of the casinos, restraurants and shops are close by -- which is particularly important in winter. (There is no need for a rental car, unless you want to drive to see other attractions in the Hills.)

We usually reserve a Deluxe or King standard room -- which are decorated in 'period' style, with comfortable beds. Rooms at the front have a good view of Main Street. Our rooms were consistently well appointed and clean; service is friendly and prompt.

This has become our favorite place and top recommendation for relatives, when my Mom's home fills up during the holidays.

Casinos beckon on Main Street, if you like to gamble. Be sure to visit the Old Style -- the original bar room is on the left side. (Where I bravely asked for a root beer as a kid.) This is a real piece of Old Deadwood, often packed during the holidays. The Midnight Star is a good bet for lunch and dinner, also on Main Street. The Star has two restaurants: Diamond Lil's is on the second floor -- a casual place that is perfect for families, filled with movie memorabilia. (The Star was built by Kevin Costner after he filmed Dances With Wolves.) Jake's is upstairs: the best high-end restaurant in Deadwood, and a good choice for a romantic dinner -- or great food and a good wine list.

If you visit the Hills and you like to golf, here is an Insider Tip: Tomahawk Lake Country Club -- one of the most picturesque, original and challenging 9-hole courses in America. Not to be missed, but bring your clubs -- this isn't a lux "country club" with a slick pro shop and a bags of Callaways for rent. Watch for the deer between 5 and 6. Lunch is basic and excellent.

I haven't mentioned Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument -- but you read about these already, right?

Have a great time!

Mark Hays

Room Tip: Ask for a 'front' room on Main Street if you want to watch the view. The rooms at the back...

Wish we could have stayed longer! It was an excellent stay. The ghost tour was fun. We stayed in room 213, which is said to have ghostly activity. We did experience some... like TV turning off, hearing footsteps in the bathroom. Overall, the rooms are well kept, clean and comfortable. Staff was very accommodating. Wireless was good. Deadwood was fun. I recommend taking a Deadwood tour. Shopping was not what I expected. Shops have a lot of "China Made" stuff. I would definitely stay at the Bullock again and recommend it highly, maybe staying during the off season so hotel rate to be a little less expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for room 213

Thank you for commenting on the Bullock Hotel. That is so exciting you experienced some ghot activity! Seth likes to make sure everything is going smoothly in his hotel, so he was probably checking on the TV and making sure the bathroom was spotless! The Bullock is a great place to stay downtown and we are so glad you were able to experience it. Please come visit us soon!

I read the poorer reviews as well as thegood ones, but decided to make my own opinion. We loved it. Our room, booked over the internet 6 months before was on the main street, directly over the front door. There was no noise from the casino below at all, some street noise but that was to be expected with the windows open. You get given vouchers for all sorts of stuff such as a free drink, 10% off breakfast, money off gambling etc, We had drinks at the bar, whilst it wasn't busy, was very pleasant. All the staff were nice and helpful.
Breakfast was excellent, freshly cooked & very cheaply priced, strange they don't do evening meals as they'd make a killing.
Deadwood is a fun town, you get several gun fights throughout the day, plenty of gambling if you like it, and plenty of restaurants. The Adams house is well worth a tour, as is the bus tour that takes you up the Mt Moriah cemetery, where Wild Bill & Calamity Jane are buried.
Its claimed to be haunted, but wenever saw, heard or felt anything. Overall I'd say ignore the bad comments, this is a great place to stay.

Room Tip: We had a walk around and thought we had one of the best rooms on the main street. They are historic...

I was really disappointed as I love historic hotels and boutique properties; it was just old and lacked charm, really. The staff was pleasant but I found all of Deadwood to be the same. I much preferred the adjacent city of Lead and would suggest staying there and visiting Deadwood for an hour. Could not bring myself to have breakfast in the single restaurant in Bullock (open only until 1 pm) as it was a dark, bar and not how I like to start my mornings with nice light.

One of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in. Beautiful room, jacuzzi, view of main street. The chef at Bully's who served us breakfast also served as waiter and had the whole room running quite well, plus served up a great sense of humor. Fun. We stayed there off season after spending a few nights in the Black Hills, and really, Deadwood was a disappointment overall. I was hoping for some interesting gift shops, maybe something by local artists, but 90% of it is crap made in China and the slot machines all over makes the place look really stupid. Staying in the Bullock Suite ($129 when we were there!) made it worth it.

We are happy to hear that staying with us at the Bullock made your trip worth while! The jacuzzi suite really is something, and we are very proud of our unique restaurant, Bully's. We are priviledged to have such wonderful staff to make the Bullock as great as it is. Thank you for your comments and we hope to see you again real soon.
