“Historic, in all the BEST ways!”
Reviewed 6 November 2012

I honestly don't know how some reviewers can give lousy reviews to some places. Especially when they have never actually STAYED there! My wife & I ALMOST canceled our reservation based on such a review but were glad we didn't. Our 'historic' corner room was on the third floor and you could look right down the wide main street all the way into downtown. It had a king-size bed and a large sitting area and was very nicely appointed with period furnishings. Yes, the bathroom was dated but isn't that what 'historic' is all about? Marble floors, tile walls and a clawfoot bathtub certainly did not detract from our experience. Yes, the air conditioner was small but still cooled the room nicely. The TV wasn't huge either, but who would want to sit around watching TV all day? Internet service was OK. Very nice linens and no smell whatsoever in our room, any of the other rooms we inspected or anywhere in the hotel for that matter! Grand staircases and hallways, period art adorning some of the walls. The hotel casino was very nice with a much larger one across the street in the 'sister' gaming area. The buffet was top-notch for both breakfast and dinner. On the surface, the room wasn't a great value at $130 but we received food, drink & gaming coupons worth over $60. Our stay gave us a taste of what the Old West might have been like so the experience itself was worth it!<p> In closing I would say that 'charm' and 'authenticity' more than make up for any shortcomings that might be inherent in a 100+ year old property. We are fussy travelers but also appreciate a break from interstate motel chains. We would stay again and that pretty much says it all!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the main street area are a little noisier, but there is a lot going on! Besides, the to...

Stayed for a conference Friday Sept 28 to Sunday Sept 30.
Checked in Friday afternoon. Beautiful restored lobby. Turns out that is the best part.
PArking is at a premium in Deadwood and the Franklin has spared every expense to provide patrons a place to leave their vehicle during their stay.
We were directed behind the hotel to a small lot holding only 18 cars and luckily got the last one. Reentering the holtel through the back on the 2nd floor.
The rooms are frozen in time. Telephones and small 14 nch tvs are the only concession to the 20th century. CLawfoot tubs with a shower ring, original fixtures and pushbuttom light switches. Nice charm - but only do it once.
Since there is no restaurant in the hotel ( there used to be years ago, but it is now part of the casino), there is no room service. Dining is across the street in the Silverado at their excellent buffet.
Staff was professional and friendly, and the stairwells were all original wood and stunning.
Price for a corner room on the 3rd floor facing the street was $160 a night.
Should have stayed down the street at the Holiday Inn on our priority club points!!!!!
Some of the paneling, carpets and trim were worn. Found boxelder bugs in the bath room the first night.

Room Tip: Stay a night or 2 for the charm - away from the street if you want quiet.

We recently went to Deadwood and were to stay at the Historic Franklin. Our room was almost $150 a night. We had 5 couples in our stay, so it was over $750 for one night for all of our rooms. Every one of our rooms was a nightmare. The rooms were dumpy dirty looking, very tiny and had a smell in them, The carpets were worn, little window air conditioners were mounted in the windows with duct tape and cardboard. Our room had an old 13 inch tv in it. The walls had cracks down all of them, the walls/ceilings had box elder bugs crawling over them and who knows what other bugs were also in there.

The main lobby/casino was apparently remodeled, they are very nice so it is very misleading to what you are to stay in. I don't know how they even pass any inspection. I would think the condition of the rooms would be an embarrassment to the hotel/casino. I could not imagine being the owner of this establishment and expecting people to stay over night in there, they should be so embarrassed of the hotel. It may be historic but it could be taken care of.

Do to a medical emergency in our party we ended up leaving the hotel hours after checking in and stayed elsewhere. However we still paid over the $750 for all of our rooms for one night that we didn't actually use. We will never stay there again or recommend anyone to stay there, it is a nightmare. You couldn't pay me to stay there.

I loved this place, it's steeped in history.
Ok it's very dated but that's whats makes it so good.
It's got character and I found the staff very friendly,
The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was great, an old iron bath with a massive shower head above, great!
It's not 5* but go with an open mind and enjoy the character of the place.

We have a very mixed opinion about our stay at this hotel. It was an experience, and it was like we had stepped through a time portal and into the past. The room was comfortable, and while the claw foot tub added to the 1880's feel, it was almost impossible to get into to, and the lack of safety bars made it almost dangerous. The bathroom was beyond tiny. Someone had apparently spilled a bottle of cleaning fluid or after shave in the room before we checked in, and the smell was beyounf awful. Please instruct your front desk staff on the need to be friendly and welcoming. The lady who helped us with check in was downright rude. If you are looking for a true Deadwood experience, this is your place-- but keep an open mind

This is a hundred year old hotel that looks its age. The lobby and casino have been updated. Our room had old carpets and furniture with stains. The rooms had window air conditioners that were installed with cardboard and duck tape, soo attractive. The plaster was cracked especially in the bathroom. The rooms and halls were dated, not in a good way.
